    2020 Offseason

It’s about to get crazy in the NHL. “Oh geez, it is crazy,” said one NHL general manager on Tuesday. The Stanley Cup has been awarded. The draft is less than a week away and teams still have to completely reshape their rosters. The problem, lamented the GM, is it’s hard to establish pricing right now. The traditional price paid, from a free agent to a trade, is out the window because teams are strapped. Budgets are kicking in. And still. Everyone wants to get better. “That jams everybody up for everything. You have to get creative,” said another GM on Tuesday afternoon. “You end up doing things you wouldn’t have thought. That’s what’s going on.” • Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been taking care of business and made it clear that Detroit is willing to add salary to acquire more young assets for the rebuild. One thing that will help clarify how much he can spend on that front is a new contract for restricted free agent Anthony Mantha. Talks have progressed on that front and are moving in the right direction. It wouldn’t be surprising if that contract is shorter than originally thought. If he were to do a, let’s say, three-year extension, that would allow him to hit free agency before he’s 30 and in a time where there should be more clarity on the financial landscape of the league.

Overrated? He just turned 22, and is already a half point per game defenseman. He's easily a top four, with the potential to grow into a top two. He would be a great partner for one of Hronek or Seider.

Yeah, totally agree. They don't NEED to dump him and he's still got TONS of value. Again, any trade for Stamkos would be a cap dump. They don't want to take a big contract back I'm sure. They'd want futures/prospects. I'd definitely do it if the ask was futures. First, he's a genuine difference maker who would help us win games. Second, in doing so he makes us more desirable for UFAs. Third, if nothing changes you trade him to a contender 3 years from now for a haul because he'll still be able to score at 33 years old. For Veleno/Rasmussen and two 2nds I'd do it.

In that scenario I'd just take Nugant Hopkins from Edmonton and let them pursue Stamkos. In any event Detroit is situated to benefit if good players/big contracts are gonna get moved.

Bare Naked Ladies should do all Anthem singing from here on in. Firstly because they did a killer job. Secondly because my eighty-year-old mother gasped slightly when they were announced and then commented that they looked more like Clothed Old Men.

    NHL Diversity

The mods are volunteers. Currently Jedi is the only one who comes around. He has asked that people help him out since he is not around as much as he would like to be. The other mods have just vanished. They do not get paid and take abuse from those who disagree with them. It's a thankless job. If they come down, people tell them to lighten up. If they don't, people grumble that they should have been on it. Again, if you have a problem with a post, report it. If it is more than one poster, report all the posts that bother you. Your help is needed to make the forum work. All of us are responsible as users. I just sit back and watch things devolve. To keep things on topic, I'm glad they are just using "aces". It sounds better, and everyone knows the whole "ace up your sleeve" thing.

    NHL Diversity

Your belief that a lack of black or native players in the NHL has anything to do with racism is just wrong. If you offered free equipment, training, and coaching to 100 random black kids, they would overwhelmingly choose basketball and football over sports like hockey. That's not racism, it's culture. Certain groups of people prefer certain sports. Its a choice, not discrimination. In sports like hockey or baseball, the number of black players is low in comparison to the general population. True. But the percentage of black players in basketball and football is significantly higher than the general population. In reality, if you were to tally the number of individuals playing professional sports overall, you would find that the percentages of each race are similar to the general population. Systemic racism in sports, hockey, or the NHL, is a myth. Blacks are generously represented among professional athletes. The fact that percentages are higher in some sports and lower in others is due to culture and choice for the most part. To say that certain sports are "racist" based on demographics would be like accusing manufacturers of racism because their products are more popular among certain races than others. Our culture affects what products we buy, what food we eat, what sports we play. Not everything is about race.
