A few decades from now, I don't think anyone's going to talk about how we got eliminated in the first round, if the record is broken they will talk about how we broke the record AND won 4 Stanley cups during the streak. It's all about how history is written, and nobody is going to write "the red wings were eliminated first round 5 years in a row just to preserve a streak, FIRE HOLLAND"
I presume the hockey books/ web pages will have something along the lines of "An impressive 30 years in a row playoff streak broken by the Red Wings in 2020. During their run they managed to win 4 stanley cups and sported legends such as Yzerman, Lidstrom, Fedorov, Hasek etc etc etc"
Streak is nothing to look down upon at all.
That's not to say Holland hasn't made questionable moves this summer but of course that's been discussed ad nauseam.

Unfortunately a large portion of the Red Wings fanbase have become insufferable. There is literally nothing to complain about with this deal at all. 5 million per season for a dman of his calibre coming into his prime is as ideal as it gets. Some ***** at the term, but he'll be only 32 when the deal is up. I see no issue.

I just thought I'd bump this classic post up today in honor of the fact that we no longer have any of the Juck ******* pott players any more....no cleary, Quincey or Babcock.

The deal was a front loaded 4 year contract. That's all anyone knows. You can ***** that he doesn't want to sign here all you want. But obviously Ken tried to get him and missed. But you're acting like he never even tried. A lot of people today acting like children throwing temper tantrums because they didn't get their way. Guess what a lot of players passed on a lot of teams today. We weren't the only ones to get passed up on.

There's no guarantee these players wanted to come to Detroit, what is Holland supposed to do? The only leverage he would have is to overpay and look at the criticism he gets for that.

OK, Mr. Salient here. A week ago everyone loved Holland for dumping the Datsyuk contract into the Arizona desert never to be heard from again. Probably eaten by dingos. The fact they had any money to get a good quality player (yes he's a solid #2 center and hey, would you look at that he can still wear #51) is partially due to the contract dump. Give Kenny a break. No, he didn't sign a player to put the Wings over the top. Know how many GM's in the NHL put themselves over the top with the players available today? Zero. Lucic in Edmonton, LOL Mongo pleeeeeeease.
If you're mad at Holland for the money, that set itself up in the previous years of treading water and not being a destination hotspot anymore. That's why you have to pay more to get good players and incredible amounts for great ones. Becoming a slave to the streak and keeping it alive has cost the Wings and it showed again today.

Nope. Trade one of Goose or Tats if and only if it's part of a package for a dman.
Agreed on Brouwer and Backes, but would much rather Okposo than Eriksson. Goose and Tats canbe the guys to put up Erikson numbers. It's players like Backes, Brouwer, Okposo that would create the space for them to do their thing. Trading Goose and Tats to bring in Eriksson just doesn't make any sense.
If we get a top 6 center like Backes and add a winger that brings a new element to the team, it would go a long way to help the more skilled guys we do have to play their game. What you suggest would just make the team a lot older, leading to even more declining players in 3-4 years.
I think if it takes a 5-6 year deal to get Backes here, Holland should do it. He could be a huge part of this team down the middle for the next couple years, then become a role guy when the youth take over the top 6 roles. If he declines to a point his cap is a deterrent to the team, trade him to whatever rebuilding team needs a character guy to help out with their kids.

But(t)s are for patting. I haven't decided yet what to do with revirement(t)s...
