That Datsyuk is a pretty cool guy...

I can think of some "stars" in this league who could take a few lessons in humility from Pasha.

    Ericsson on notice?

Of the current roster, there are many untouchables. Mule, Z, Pavel, Lids, Rafalski, those guys aren't going anywhere. There are a handful of guys on offense who could go either way and need to earn their spots. Ritola, IFil, Mursak, for example. However, what about defense? I'd say it's safe to put the top four as pretty set. Lids, Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, in some combination. Salei's probably pretty set as #5, but is Ericsson really set as the #6? Hear me out. Ericsson is listed as six foot four, two-twenty. He plays soft, not using that size in any real capacity. He pulled down a team-worst -15 last season despite playing only 62 games (for reference, Stuart was -12, but played all 82). The -15 marker is #286 of 300 amongst defensemen last season, with the worst being Steve Staios at -27. 4 goals, 9 assists in 62 games. -15. Not hopeful numbers for a #6 defenseman. From what I've seen of Kindl, he's a version of Ericsson that can actually hit. His production in GR is similar to Ericsson's during his last full season there, so I think there's a chance that Ericsson's spot isn't as set as people seem to think. I hope that having a competitor nipping at his heels pushes E to improve, but we'll have to see. At the moment, it may be his spot to lose. It should be an interesting season, at least.

    The NHL Injury Thread

[this just in from PBS...Sidney Crosby has been reported to have pulled his pud and is expected to miss the next 3 minutes. doctors were baffled to the situation, not knowing he actually had one, but remain optimistic for a speedy recovery.]

The link I posted under "Tonight's Stream" should contain one. I got that particular one from the Rangers HFBoards GDT for tonight.

As of yesterday SJ sent 2 more defensemen to the minors. Lilja is still on the training camp roster. Camp roster Not sure about the order that they list the guys, but he is the 5th one, so maybe he's got a chance yet.

Is Mike Modano This Year's Dallas Drake?

You mean because of the whole "Dallas" thing? Hmm, something to think about.

    Luxury Tax System

Because it's become a miserable product with the final 2 minutes of every game taking 5 hours and the game is filled with societal abortions of human beings... it's hard to back a game with so many low-lives in it... the league needs to stop marketing d-bags like Lebron and Kobe and market higher quality human beings that are intelligent, valuable members of society like Chauncy Billups (maybe moreso in his hayday as his quality of play has decreased with age), Chris Paul, Joe Johnson and Tim Duncan... Also, the game is run by a joke of a commissioner... which just so happens to be Bettman's mentor.. surprise, huh?

Pavs is the man. Makes me so proud to be a Red Wings fan when one of our guys does something so unselfish as to make others lives just a bit better.

Is Mike Modano This Year's Dallas Drake?

because drake was the greatest thing to ever happen to the red wings and they wouldn't have been able to live with themselves if they had not won the cup just for him

You had me more or less until the part in bold... this is not an option. period. - if Draper retired, we'd still be responsible for his cap hit (35+ signing) AND we'd be down a roster player, that's lose-lose.

When Drake was here we had a third line (Drake-Draper-Cleary) that worked harder than the opponent and was tough to play against. They were physical; they got in the way and they annoyed every line they checked. Draper and Cleary felt secure in playing an intense physical game because Drake was there to back them up. With Modano we have yet to see how effective a scoring third line can be as opposed to the line we had with Drake here. As of right now, though, the third scoring line looks promising.

Drake brought intensity every game and simply destroyed the opposition with his hitting. But he only had 1 goal and 3 assists so it doesn't surprise me that the impact he had on the ice is diminished by some on this board. esteef

Is Mike Modano This Year's Dallas Drake?

People seriously give Drake too much credit. He helped, yes, and he was a physical force in the playoffs and an inspiration, yes, but he wasn't a huge factor. The lack of the injuries (Schneider, Kronwall, Zetterberg, Bertuzzi, Lebda, Calder etc. etc.) that had plagued the team the year before, the resurgence of Osgood in net, and Franzen's offensive explosion were what won the Cup for the Wings, not Drake. Had the Wings not sustained an inordinate number of injuries the season before, it's likely that they would have defeated Anaheim. I'm not sure how people have gotten "Drake got us the Cup!" into their heads. It's not true. Having an intact defensive corps, having a largely-uninjured group of scoring forwards, and having an extra weapon in the form of Franzen were what got the team that win. Drake was a minor factor at best.
