Nine Athletes who Excelled at Being Average
LasVegasRocks and 3 others reacted to newfy for a post in a topic
Drapers prime had him making Olympic teams because of his PK ability. I dont think average is how I would describe him at all, he was always one of the best defensive forwards in the game, one of, and probably the best for a while at PKing and was the best year in and year out on faceoffs. Average offensively for a third liner maybe -

I just realized why Sheldon Souray has seemingly revitalized his career. Because he's dating WWE diva Kelly Kelly. Don't know if he'll be a Norris nominee, but he should get some kind of award for this accomplishment. -

I recognize I will be negged outta my rear for this, but the same could be said about pretty much the entire roster as of late. including players who usually are untouchable as far as critique goes. -

Nine Athletes who Excelled at Being Average
Uncle Danny and one other reacted to Bring Back The Bruise Bros for a post in a topic
Maybe its because when I was growing up, guys like McCarty, Draper, Maltby, Kocur, and Lapointe were such instrumental parts to our success, but I find myself liking the "grinders" and "role players" and "enforcers" more than the "stars". They don't get the publicity that the star players get, but their role is just as important. When I look at teams like Washington, many will admire Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Green. I always find myself liking guys like Jason Chimera and Matt Hendricks. It's not that I don't like watching guys like Kane and Toews make amazing plays and split defenses, but I appreciate the guys like Carcillo and Bickell, who work just as hard (if not harder), and don't get nearly the appreciation from the media. Not so say the media hates grinders, but they are often left in the shadows. -

Nine Athletes who Excelled at Being Average
LasVegasRocks and one other reacted to Scott Stevens for a post in a topic
In the words of the Rock, Draper knew his damn role, and he shut his damn mouth. Absolutely no reason to say anything negative about this guy. Saying any athlete that's won a prestigious award in his prime, numerous championships, and played 17 years in a professional sport is "average" is just a stupid observation. Kris Draper was a great bottom 6 forward. -

Once upon a time Draper was one of, if not the best face-off man in the league, that's not very average. -

Actully no. If the ball is red, the FACT is that the ball is red. If you take that FACT and form an opinion from a different perspective and say the ball is blue, I wouldn't call that an opinion, I'd call it simply being WRONG. -

I look at it this way - the Norris Trophy is Nick's to lose every season. Sometimes he wins it, sometimes he doesn't. Either way, he starts out with it. -
2 pointsFive wins and four losses? The coaches suck Never mind that we have two new assistants. Never mind that Babcock is one of the best in the league; the grass is guaranteed to be greener on the other side---fire him!! Cleary hasn't been doing well so far. He's terrible! Send him off the team! Nine games with less production is unacceptable! Bwahaha. OK. So nine games of bad play means that a player is horrible and that not trading him entails excessive loyalty on the part of the front office. Thank goodness you're not a GM.

Hockeymom1960 reacted to Bring Back The Bruise Bros for a post in a topic
The same idea as the hits thread, just to get all fighting videos and talk in one place, so we don't have a ton of different threads about fighting. Keep the conversation peaceful. I'll start with Detroit's Big E: Eric Boulton drops Douglas Murray: -

When? When he scored in the one game he played with Datsyuk/Cleary? Or when he scored 3 points in 4 games with Flip and Franzen? How about last year when he scored 14 points in 11 games with Datsyuk/Cleary? Or the month before that, played mostly with Flip, when he scored 12 points in 14 games? That's about the extent of his "chance" at being a top-six forward at any point in his career. -

Coaching part of the problem?
55fan reacted to Scott Stevens for a post in a topic
Everyone else in the entire league thinks that: a) Holmstrom is old, slow, and stinks b) Bertuzzi is olds, slow, and stinks c) Hudler is small, slow, and stinks Replace these three guys with FAST, YOUNG, and GOOD. That's the answer. We've got a Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppula, Franzen, Helm, and Abdelkader. Those 6 forwards are worth their salt. The coaching staff and GM should have enough brains to know what to do with the other 6 spots. Unfortunately, they think Holmstrom and Bertuzzi are 40 goals scorers. Babcock and Holland need to pull their heads out of their butts and realize that they don't have to throw 2011-2012 down the drain to save face with their signings and loyalty. Just put the crappy guys in the stands, and fess up to the fact that you signed them for too long. -

Coaching part of the problem?
Frozen-Man reacted to clutchngrab for a post in a topic
Oh yeah? What style was that? Somehow worse than Hudler? Ridiculous. Babcock and Holland can't manage personnel - it's been obvious for a while. For example, not finding legit wingers to play with Dats is borderline criminal. Here we have one of the top few players in the game playing with no line mates. What a ******* waste.
