    I don't hate Pronger because he's good. I hate him because he's an *******.

We have played one game since the deadline, and won. I hardly think our current position in the standings has much to do with the lack of trades at the deadline.

any kind of hit on letang is legal.

There's a reason us college hockey is so much chippier than chl hockey and it's because the only way to get back at someone for being chippy is to be chippy right back. I'd be interested in knowing how many people around here that grew up playing hockey are people who want to get rid of it. I can understand getting the goons out of the leagues, but fighting is in the game for a reason.

    Nystrom hit on Letang

Brutal but clean hit. What pisses me off more than anything, is that in the new NHL when a player gets rocked, the hitter is immediately sought after and play is stopped. It drives me absolutely crazy! What the hell happened to "remember" the hit and lay one back on him later on? It's to the point where I'd almost like to see a penalty called for the person that causes the stoppage for those reasons within 10 seconds of a hit.

    Lidstrom to win Norris trophy?

I think that is absolutely asinine. If you want to argue that people won't give him Norris because they don't want to admit Lidstrom is just as good or better, those same people could just fall back on this: Orr, ignoring his rookie year, effectively played 8 seasons in the NHL, in those 8 seasons he has won: - 8 Norris trophies - 3 Hart trophies - 2 Conn Smythe trophies - 2 Art Ross trophies Some would argue that if his career was not cut short, he could have won 15-20 Norris trophies. The problem is that there really are no defensive stats. Any stats you find that you can try and present as defensive stats are subjective at best. That's the problem I always have with trying to determine who the best is defensively. You can do that with the Wings because you watch them play all the time. You can't really assess a player's defensive play without watching them all the time. Unless you watch every player just as much as every other player, you will never be able to form an objective view.

    Nystrom hit on Letang

I think it was a clean hit. Letang put himself in a terrible position at the last minute, at that speed its hard to change course at the last minute.

Lidstrom has played games in the past about "oh, I might move back to Sweden" Even the perfect human is all about the dollars. To think otherwise is naive.

    Presidents Trophy

It gives you something shiny for one of the Alternate Captains to drive down Woodward with. If you don't win the Cup, nothing else matters.

Stuff about Team Canada and the Summit Series: 1) Of the thirty-five man roster, seven players played in all eight games, while five played in none. 2) Fifteen players have been elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame; two of them played no games. 3) Two goaltenders played the same number of games. 4) "The Slash" was arguably the turning point of the Series, although both Canadians would later diminish their roles. 5) One player scored three game-winning goals and, except for USSR comebacks, would have had two more. 6) In the blink of an eye, the same moment is captured by two different individuals. 7) Game Four was important for two major reasons: A) Phil Esposito gave his famous post-game speech and B) The fans reaction, both during and following the game, was embarrassing to both the players and to the rest of the country. This was the touchstone game of why people have come to realize that Vancouver has some of the most ignorant hockey "fans" in all of Canada.

    Presidents Trophy

It's actually a lot less of a chance than that. Just because 7 out of 25 teams since its induction have won the President's Trophy have also won the Stanley Cup has nothing to do with the actual percentage that that particular team would win the playoffs that year. Since it's a lot of math and since each series has a number of different outcomes in terms of probability, I won't explain it all, but just trust me when I say that it is definitely not a little more than a 1 in 4 chance that a team is going to win the Stanley Cup just based on history of who has won both in a single season. Sorry, nerd moment for the night. I get where you are coming from though. Based on history, it does indicate that a little over 25% of the teams that won the President's Trophy have also won the Cup that season, but it's not a cause and effect thing in terms of the playoff format.

The Red Wings have enough offensive ability in their top 3 lines to dress a fighter every night. Everyone keeps saying (Babs included) that a fighter is useless since all they do is eat up minutes and take penalties. Yeah, they do that. They also (if they can hit, which most of the time they can) keep the other team's stars and ass-clowns looking over their shoulder and hopefully distracts them from what they do best (score goals and run around being ass-clowns). This team can support a legit enforcer (i.e. Parros, McGrattan, Kocur, etc) that is expected to keep the peace and lay on the occasional big hit, and possibly find a niche in the Red Wing' style of play as a net front presence (replacing Homer eventually). A power-forward that is a good fighter and scorer (i.e. Lucic) is rare and can't really be pursued since they are high value to their current team. Which is why a 3rd line player on a non-playoff team (Moen) commands a high price or isn't on the block at all.

    Presidents Trophy

Home ice is the only thing that matters. Nobody's gonna be bragging about a Presidents' Trophy. Well, maybe 'nucks fans since they're that desperate.

Actually neither Weber or Chara are having super impressive seasons. Imo Weber has been good enough for a couple of years now that he probably deserves a win, but if Chara wins it will be even more of a reputation win than when Lids won it last year. Karlsson is having a beast of a season though. He doesn't seem to be slowing down either. To me, he's not even close to good enough defensively to win it, but if he keeps putting up these points the voters might not care since guys like Lids, Chara and Weber will be so far behind. Lids is having a great season though, even though he's not producing offensively like he has in the past. I think the voters will also look at how a guy like Ian White comes in and gets paired with Lidstrom and suddenly has a career year.

The fact remains the Wings pulled something off that no team has done in the history of the NHL. Yes, weak. They have been money at home other than recently and it gets borderline strange to go after that when you could easily discuss the weaknesses of the team in much more rational ways, and with much better targets. One thing I find annoying about people who talk negatively. They like to talk NEGATIVELY.

    Is Minnesota for real?

No. I say that without any hesitation because they are currently #26 in the league in GFA. A team that doesn't score isn't going to go very far. They also have played more games than the Wings and have more shootout and loser points. Despite playing 2 games more than the Wings, their ROW is 3 less than the Wings. That's a 5 game swing in ROW out of only 30 or so games played. Sure they are great defensively but they are 29th worst in the league in Shots against/game. So they are poor in offense and give up tons of shots. They are depending totally on goaltending and have gotten 4 "extra" points for shootout wins plus they have played more games. You have to look beyond the headlines especially in a league that gives points for losing as well as extra points for a skills competition if the game is tied. As far as Danny Heatley, he has 22 points in 33 games. That's not exactly great. Uh. Sorry but No. They are near the bottom of the league in scoring.

    Is Minnesota for real?

Minnesota has historically been good defensively and most of that has been with great goaltending tandems. This year they have a few more offensive weapons available and it shows with their record. Both of those things combined with consistent play at home and on the road will lead to points. The main test will come after the AS game and trade deadline during the final stretch to the playoffs when everyone has settled their lineups. If they can continue with their consistency then they can make the playoffs. After that, like every other team, it will be up to goaltending and depth in the lineup.
