If Scotty can coach, Steve can play. Come on Captain, take a couple shifts, give the crowd a thrill.

What happens if Nyquist and Smith both have Calder worthy seasons, Brunner surprises, and Filppula increases his point total? Will the same people bashing Holland now turn around and call him genius? The point about the mighty Wings falling back to earth after decades of excellence due to late drafts and significantly increased parity in the league is one we all need to remember. The Blues had a longer streak of playoff appearances than the current streak of the Wings. How many Finals appearances and Cups do they have to show for it. A lot less than the Wings do during theirs. To sustain the level of franchise he did across the salary cap inception is impressive indeed, since the draft and cap were largely geared to keep a franchise from maintaining such lofty height for so long ("parity"). Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if most GM's would up their trade prices for the Wings out of jealously or not wanting to be seen as helping to feed the beast. With the looming CBA changes, things could radically alter the playing field again. Part of Holland's plan may be to see what happens with that so he can react accordingly. Until the wheels come off, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. In some ways he is like the chess grandmaster who can see seven or eight moves ahead, and can sacrifice short term in what looks like a rout to end the match by springing a well disguised trap that NOBODY saw coming.

Some people don't seem to understand the business aspect of the Red Wings. Of course Holland and Illitch want to win a Cup ever year... winning a cup is very profitable. On the other hand, they are also thinking long term because making the playoffs every year and fielding a winning team is also profitable. This is why we don't go ALL IN for short term success, and are always thinking for the long term. Illitch (and Holland by proxy) is a smart business man. In that light, it would have handcuffed our success (read: profitability) down the road if we obtained long term 9 million dollar contracts for both Suter & Parise.

Holland blew it. Plain and simple. He's got his head up and locked right now. He's taking care of fringe moves that dont help the team and missing out on ones that could. Pondering over Holmstrom's future? Are you kidding me? Bertuzzi? Samuelsson? Tootoo? Quincey? Would any of you on here rather have these 5 guys and their 11 million dollar cap hit instead of Suter (9 mil per), nyquist, tatar, emmerton, and #63 (cant remember name)? "But Holland would have had to offer parise 9 mil too.". Fine! If he wasnt blowing it on has-beens, we'd still have 4-5 mil in cap space even after spending 18 mil per on those 2 guys. Holland is going to need to trade players now. And Franzen isnt going to be what other teams want. Filppula , Smith, and Nyquist are the goods. Losing those guys will hurt us more than people realize. Holland has failed. Goose said it best = no points for 2nd place.

Ian White is our #2 defenseman. That's borderline outrageous. Holland should've been better prepared for Nick's departure. It's really that simple.

Don't fool yourself, people. He didn't care about Philly or Nashville. He cared about using the stupidity of one GM to land himself a fat contract before the CBA is up. Of course he's going to come out and say he loves Nashville and wants to end his career there. I'd say anything you want after landing $110 million dollars.

You know, the term slobber knocker is just not used often enough outside of professional wrestling. I vow to use it more in everyday conversation.

I didn't really have any strong opinion on Semin coming here. It seemed interesting, but risky. It's one more option gone though.

Yessir, Mike doing work and everything is about to blow up in classic Breaking Bad style. I'm anticipating this to be the best season of the series. For the love of god, if you are reading this thread and haven't watched this show yet, go watch it. NOW! It's a masterpiece.

What defenseman traded/free agent the past 3 years would have been a very good top pairing defenseman for the Red Wings moving forward in the future? If a top tier defenseman gets traded to anyone but the Wings, and the offer isn't something completely ludicrous I'll start blaming Holland, but the only defenseman that fits what the Red Wings need the past few years was Suter, if you want to argue Burns I'll understand it, I just don't think the trade would have for value(Setoguchi,Coyle and a first would be equivalent to Filpulla, Smith/Nyquist and a first , and I'm not sold on Burns fitting in our puck possession game, he takes a lot of risks, something the Red Wings defense probably has enough of. I'd like to hear(in reasonable hindsight obviously we probably wouldn't have been able to trade for Weber/Chara etc.) on players that have been moved, what you think Holland should have done? I can't see a defenseman that I'd personally feel good about going forward with for the next 5 years other than Suter, and Holland did all he could to get him. The situation is not dire, there is plenty of time, cap space, and assets for Holland to work with. If he strikes out and the Wings miss the playoffs, Yandle or Enstrom get moved for cheap then there is reasonable examples of Holland not getting the players we need.

I haven't "talked s***" to anyone. I'm not 12 yrs old. I've been more than respectful here. Everyone else here seems to appreciate that except for you. You took your cheap shots so I'm sorry if I was direct in my reply by telling you something you didn't wanna hear. The truth hurts sometimes. And I haven't rubbed our playoff win in anyones face. I have respect for the DRW. I'm not a 12 yr old picking internet fights. I enjoy the back and forth hockey talk regardless of team affiliation. Don't be the one bad apple...

You know, for $10 a pop, I could make some serious money writing speeches like that. "I love the ______________. I love the direction the team is going and I believe ___________ and ____________ will do whatever it takes to bring us the Cup. I'm excited to be a part of the ___________ organization and hope to remain with them for years to come. I love the city of ______________. I love the fans. We have a great following and they have made me feel at home here. I look forward to the next ____ years in this great city playing for this great team. That'll be 10 bucks.

Because its not a known fact that since Bettman gave ESPN the finger and went to Versus (now NBCsports) that ESPNs budget for hockey coverage became $43.25 in a calendar year.
