For the forth time since 1992, we have an official lockout. A round of applause for our amazing commissioner Gary Bettman, who is overseeing his third lockout, and the league's fantastic owners who both care so much about the NHL and it's fans Both sides met thousands of times over the last few weeks and worked really hard but just couldn't get a deal done.

@Proteautype: THIS JUST IN: A fleet of New York City firemen have been dispatched to fight a raging pants fire at NHL headquarters. Normally I think Proteau is kind of a d**che (though that doesnt keep me from agreeing with him occasionally), but this made me LOL.

"the National Hockey League has been, and remains, committed to negotiating around the clock to reach a new CBA" BULLS***. If they were comitted to negotiating around the clock, then they would be, you know, NEGOTIATING AROUND THE CLOCK. There was absolutely NO urgency to any of the talks, or they would have been burning the midnight oil for months to avoid the current situation, not throwing around the word LOCKOUT with a month to go in negotiations. Good faith my lily white ass. Excuse me while I go rage some more...

It's staggering that in spite of a 50% increase in revenue since the last CBA 7 years ago earning the league over a billion dollars more in revenue, there's a lockout. This should have been the least dramatic of all CBA negotiations.

If I'm the NHLPA, the first thing I do before I start any negotiations is demand the immediate resignation of Bettman. How can they negotiate in good faith with someone who has locked them out 3 times?

I hate everything right now. Does anyone know of a good source to watch the Griffs games streaming online? Might as well get to know our prospects better while I'm being denied my Wing fix. As much as I would love to give a big middle finger to the entire league and pledge that they will never get another cent out of me, the reality is that I've bled this team since I was a kid, and I just can't imagine turning my back on that. It will certainly affect my decision to spend money on gear and things I don't need, but my ass will still be in the seats for whatever games I actually get this year. One of those hopefully being the Winter Classic. I can only hope that the public disgust at the behavior of both the league--and now, increasingly, the players--will put some pressure on them to come to an agreement before too much of the season (and fan loyalty) is destroyed. And I realize how naive that sounds as I literally laughed out loud at myself as I typed it. Whatever.

Smith, Nyquist, and Brunner will be there. That will be pretty entertaining to watch them. I think the fact that Brunner will get some time on the North American size rink before the NHL should end up to be one postive out of all of this.

Much as the poison dwarf needs to go, he can't hold a candle to the likes of Sepp Blatter or Bernie Ecclestone. FIFA is corrupt to a scale that would shame a mafiosi don. F1 has 50% of its revenue go not to the teams, not to the drivers, but straight to a private investment firm (via Bernie of course. Who through a multitude of off-shore companies also owns just about every piece of F1, from promoting the races to the TV deals). So it could be worse. But still, Bettman out!

well here we are again I hope the NHLPA gets the idea out of their heads that they'll actually 'win' the lockout, the owners will get pretty much what they want in the end, that's what happened last time and it will happen again all the players are really doing is prolonging the inevitable and wasting possibly a whole year of their careers in the process it's a sad situation, but the rich will always lose out to the even richer

So I'm thinking the way to remember how to spell his name is to break it down into three parts. First C-O-L Then A-I-A and then C-O-V-O. Kind of like remembering a phone number. Do you need an unspectacular defenseman to strengthen your depth? Call area code COL-AIA-COVO.

Absolutely agree. Although, Mr. Ilitch probably won't get even most of what he wants out of this CBA. LOL @ the "you're such good friends with Bettman, why don't you call him?" comment

You think the likes of Phoenix is bleeding cash now? Lock the players out again...we'll be back down to 24 teams in the NHL. Bettman = Worst thing to happen to professional sports.

It's funny that the owners voted to lock the players out for "cost certainty" while at the very same time you know a handful of them were throwing piles of money at him in the Doan sweepstakes.
