    Monday 1 PM start time?

It's for me. Gary and I were having lunch last summer and I mentioned that I work evenings and have to miss games. He said that he'd like to put one in the afternoon for me, but that people wouldn't be home to see it. I told him to have one on the 14th because it's Thanksgiving in Canada. Once we established that Canada is a country north (mostly) of the US, and that they watch hockey there and spend money on the sport, he agreed that revenue was good, so the date was set. I told him to be sure to have two Canadian teams, but he doesn't remember that the league has any since the only time that he pays attention is when being booed when giving the silvery thing that's taller than he is to a smelly man in shorts and long socks (at least that's the part that he sees). I assured him that if he had to use two American teams for the game, that it would be ok since it's Columbus Day in the US. Despite his obvious marketing talent, I managed to convince him that Columbus playing on Columbus Day would not mean that the league would get over 90% of the television market because Columbus (the team) sucks. He was amazed to learn that Columbus Day was not named after the BJ's (a subject near and dear to his heart - or the organ that stands in for one in his case). Upon learning that all school children in the US learn (erroneously) that Columbus discovered America, he thought that this man Columbus deserved a daytime game to commemorate his great feat. It was a beautiful moment. Bettman actually showed some emotion when he pondered what would have happened had Columbus not been the first person in America (see erroneous data above). His heart broke at the thought of all of those buildings in New York that would be sitting empty since there were no people here before Columbus (see erroneous data above). The loss of revenue floored him, and he declared that a daytime game was indeed proper and fitting. So now you know.

Shutdown or not, it's very generous to include the words "Congress" and "work" in the same sentence.

Someone should inform the NHL that Columbus Day is not an off day for most businesses in America. It's a federal holiday, and the government is on shutdown. I swear, this league is so dumb.

What an unfortunate event. I hope the kid doesn't suffer from any long-lasting effects.

Poor family. And i seriously dislike these "psychics." Nothing like profiting off the pain of the mourning.

Doesn't appear to be a typo, what's the deal with a Monday matinee? Making room for Tigers and Red Sox that evening? That's 10 AM out of here. I'll be having second breakfast and watching the game. Ha ha

    Red Wings Dream Team

Right?! Unbelievable team comp.. maybe my favorite part of the article: "The team is considered one of the most talented teams of all time with 10 then future-Hall-of-Famers on the team, as well as a hall of fame coach in Scotty Bowman." I'm still convinced that this team was part of the reason the nhl started the salary cap

    10/14 GDT : Red Wings 3 at Bruins 2

I guess I'm either Canadian or a member of Congress... or maybe a night shift employee who is up in the middle of sleepy-time to catch a game that starts 6 hours before the 12-hour work shift. Works for me. Any way I get to see the Wings is a good way. I think this makes up for all the times that I leave for work an hour or two before the game starts.

So only the Canadian Wings fans get to see this. That's cool. I will be in a conference call ... at WORK. It's a work day here in America, unless you're a member of Congress.

I'm sorry, but have you and I been watching different National Hockey Leagues? One in which Franzen, Sameulsson, Bertuzzi and Cleary are skilled workhorses who make the players around them better? And I've been saying for years, with basically everyone telling me I was wrong, that Filppula had 70 point potential. His 66 point season was a long time coming, which proved me right, and the next year was simply an off year in which he was weighed down by lazy linemates, a shortened season which he was injured leading up to and the pressure of a contract year. He'll scored 60 again this year, if not 70 or more.

dumb move. Wonder if anyone will actually go to this game? Playing to an empty arena? I'll be at work, like 99% of everyone else with a more or less traditional job.

I've noticed them doing this, but it was never the Wings so I didn't care. I'm just curious what my boss is going to say when I take an early lunch so I can be back at work in time for puck drop to have this on the 70" in the conference room.

    Fight ends with on-ice seizure

Again, the injuries you refer to result from activities that are necessary parts of being a soldier or a firefighter. Fighting is by no means essential to the game of hockey. Furthermore, junior elligibabity starts at age 16. There are a lot of naive, young players who are pigeonholed into a fighter role because of their size or other factors. If they don't go with the role they're given, their career is pretty much over. A naive person, with little formal education will almost always make the choice that allows them to keep playing. I'm usually all for allowing people to make their own mistakes. But the situation here is coercive, plain and simple. The junior hockey clubs rake in the cash, while players are usually paid nothing except for the chance to be drafted.

I don't believe in banning fighting, nor do I have a ton of sympathy for people with injuries sustained from years of being a pro athlete. Most of these sports have been around for almost 100 years, if you do not realize the dangers before receiving a pay check you're already brain damaged. When a solider has long term knee problems from years of running, or a fire fighter is burned while putting out a fire, nobody is shocked. These guys are paid an insane amount of money to play a sport. I'm not going to cry for them because they are putting there bodies out there as a result.

[quote name="Crymson" post="2444018" timestamp= What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? If you eat 2nd breakfast, then you can skip lunch for a nooner. Unless you have a tenner, then you go ahead and eat lunch. I'm sure you know what a nooner is. And of course, tenner is a nooner, only sooner.

Mantha has back to back 5 point games and actually has 5 points in 3 of his 9 games played. In 9 games he has 16 goals and 12 assists...

Always have been and always will be a Bertuzzi supporter. The guy can bring it and plays a great role on a top line just like tonight. Amazing what a 1st line looks like with 3 forwards on it who belong there.
