    Blockbuster deal?

Howard is amazing for most of his career, has a bad stretch of games, and now people want his head. Unbelievable.

    Blockbuster deal?

I might be in the that small party that doesn't want a trade at this point. I'm not saying this team is a bust and won't make playoffs but in terms of trade we don't have the cap room or pieces to make something happen that makes us a contender. Guys we want to trade Cleary, Quincey, bertuzzi, and franzen are not that highly desired by other teams. As far as the players with value to trade are our young prospects that have cheap contracts. You can't replace them with someone who makes more because of cap room and in the end a slight upgrade and more contract won't help anything when you still have those original 4 eating up cap and ice time. I rather just muscle through the season and try to pick up a key asset in the off season when cleary, Quincey, bertuzzi, Sammy are all off the books... Heck only 1 of them should be playing per night and they take about 2/3 players worth of roster. In the end there is no short term solution that makes us legit contenders this season but if we push through, bring up kids, and add the RIGHT pieces not the "panic" piece it will be a lot better situation for us long run.

Howard and Helm probable to return! Welcome back boys, getting healthier every game. Lines are strictly projected, won't be around before game time tomorrow to update so Wings current lines in the graphic are definitely not set in stone. Keep up the winning, get take this game guys. LETS GO WINGS!!

    Blockbuster deal?

Trading Howard would be unwise and a safe way to take is us out of the elite team category.

I have friends that are actually trying to get Red Wings water bottles so they can send them to Clarkson.

Not only do the wings get beat up physically, they get beat up verbally The part with Bert and the bottle was funny. He was successful in getting under their skin.

    Blockbuster deal?

Unfortunately, Lidstroms do not come along very often. Even today's most elite defensemen are quite a bit short of how good Lidstrom was in his prime.

A few complaints: - They sort of skimped on the two wins at the beginning, didn't they? Ours, in particular (the overtime thriller against the Flames). I get that the centerpiece needed to be the WC preview, but, I dunno, it gave me a weird impression. "Oh, hey, by the way, these two teams who keep losing actually won. It was nice. But we're most interested in losses, because that's our whole narrative dealy. DRAMA!" - Repetition. Predictability. Carlyle overkill. Too much locker room stuff. Maybe I wouldn't feel this way if it were the first or second episode, but by this point we know how the coaches and players are going to feel about x or y developments, and that every single player in the NHL says, "f***in' right(, boys)!" every chance he gets. - Hockey players skating on outdoor rinks and ponds. Is it the Winter Classic? No? Then I really don't care, tbh. Unless there's, like, a hooker there, or something. - Phaneuf's extension. It took too long. And, for the record, I would be saying the same thing about a Datsyuk or Zetterberg extension. Unless there was a hooker in the background, or something. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the episode. I did. I'm not even saying it was a big let down. I guess I just felt like, overall, it was too much stuff we'd already seen, and some questionable points of focus for the non-game segments. I'm sure it'd be a lot more enjoyable for us if our team hadn't s*** the bed this month. But what can you do...

    Going to Montreal

Bar-B Barn. Schwartz's Deli: there is a reason why it's called "Montreal Smoke Meat". Don't forget the bagels: Fairmount or St-Viateur.

    New guy, needing help

First of all, let me also extend a welcome handshake (or hug, if you prefer). Welcome to Red Wing Nation! As far as history, like someone said, it depends on how far you want to go back. Me, I go back a long way, but that's because I'm a lot older than most of the people on this board. There are some great DVD sets out there, including one that has three documentaries about the '97, '98 and '02 Cup runs, and 5 of the best games ever - May 16, 1996, which ends with a Steve Yzerman blast in double overtime; March 26,1997 - a date that lives in Red Wings legend; June 2, 1997, the last game against Philadelphia for the Cup; May 31, 2002 (I remember that game and laughed my ass off); and June 3, 2002, triple overtime in game 3 of the Finals (I remember it went on til 1AM). There is also a book called "What It Means to be a Red Wing". It's a very nice book with short essays written by players from the 50's until now, including Ted Lindsay, Red Kelly (and the more you dig, the more you'll find about those guys), and Ken Holland. The 90's section is quite good; Nick Lidstrom, Kris Draper, Chris Osgood, Tomas Holmstrom, Brendan Shanahan and Chris Chelios. It also has current players with Pavel and Henrik. It's a beautiful book. I remember the first time I saw it, I sat in the middle of the bookstore reading Pasha's essay. And he has autographed my copy. I hope I didn't scare you off with all this, but happy hunting!

A lot of folks are still using conference standings as a way to gauge performance, unfortunately with the redesign of the divisions and playoff wild card criteria conference standings are now completely meaningless. Remember it is first 3 teams per division that make it plus 2 wild cards. Although the Wings are 5th in the conference, we are actually in 7th place because of the wild card. The Rangers are 5 points behind us with a game in hand... The only website that is doing a real good job of showing the wild card standings is NHL.com, : http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm?season=20132014&type=WC Just wanted to bring this to everyones attention if you were not already aware of this.

    Going to Montreal

I've never been there, but my girlfriend has, and she said that the food there (not just one restaurant in particular, but everywhere she ate) was consistently some of the best food she's ever had. I don't know if she happened to get lucky and just happened to pick the 10 best restaurants in Montreal, or that they legit have amazing food, but if you go to yelp or something similar online and find what's nearby, I'm under the impression you won't be disappointed.

USA up 2 after 1 over the Czech's. Decent game so far. Missed Mantha's hat trick dammit.

If that's the Wings scoring that goal, I guarantee it gets waived off with "intent to blow." Or Holmstrom was too close to Smith. Somehow, Holmstrom would be involved.

I have such mixed feelings about this. I think that any rational citizen looking at this objectively would agree you shouldn't have publicly funded stadiums for billionaires, and a city as economically depressed as Detroit shouldn't have built THREE new stadiums in the span of 15 years. There is no appreciable economic benefit to building a stadium, particularly where there was already a stadium in that area. Studies have been done, and there just isn't any evidence to back it up. All that being said, people who like the Red Wings (myself included) convince ourselves that we don't care. Or, to look at another way, we DO care about the Red Wings more than we care about a museum renovation, lowering a budget deficit, or the $12 million diverted from education funds (my number/sources may be inaccurate, but you get the point). And as an out-of-state Red Wings fan, I actually felt guilty that I was happy about the new arena because it benefits me as a fan (though not one that gets back to many live games) without having having to pay the bill in the city I grew up around. I guess here's the thing with Detroit that keeps coming up: If not now, when? If your argument against any new development or construction is always "wait till things get better?", has that wish ever really come true since, what, the '67 Riots? You could argue there are certain way the city has gotten better since the 90's, but what they really mean is that city has done a better job becoming a Chuck E' Cheese's for adult suburbanites (casinos, Comerica, Ford Field, etc.). JLA is old and would need to be replaced sooner or later, even if there wasn't an immediate threat (like an owner thinking about selling the team or moving it somewhere else). Sorry, just rambling out loud. I get frustrated when I go back home, see the busted out windows and 28% unemployment, and then have my family tell me how nice downtown is because there's a skating rink at Campus Martius now. Most of my family has never moved more than 10 miles in their lifetime, and they don't know that it doesn't have to be like that. Go Red Wings.
