So what do we have to trade?
krsmith17 and one other reacted to DickieDunn for a post in a topic
Suter is the only defensemen who is clearly better than Kronwall who has moved, and he went to the team willing and able to pay his BFF a ridiculous matching contract. Over $15 mil for Suter and Parise is not a good deal, especially when it runs through 2025. Weber was a RFA but Nashville wasn't going to lose him right after losing Suter. So I guess my question is, how the f--- do you replace Lidstrom? The answer is, you don't. You take the younger guys you've drafted, add Dekeyeser, and hope that e of them can grow into top 4 D to play with Kronwall. Ericsson and Dekeyser are 2nd pairing guys now, Dekeyser is getting better and Smith might be there next year. Then there are Sproul, Backman, Ouellet, Marchenko, and Jensen. You can say "well, those types of guys would be moved for the right package," but the odds are that the right package would mean a ridiculous overpayment. They don't need a player bad enough to trade something like Tatar, Jurco, Sproul, Backman, and Mrazek to get him. -

Regner: Next year could be Babcock's last

That's not true. Cleary was scratched before he was injured. Bertuzzi only got in 1 playoff game when no one was looking effective. He was playing before late in the season because we were missing pretty much everyone and the kids were still in the lineup so he wasn't taking their spots. Beware of the grass on the other side. -

There has to be a team looking, or at least willing, to trade a top flight player though. No top d-men have been traded recently. Only one hit free agency. -

I'm a fan of enforcers and even I'll say it, he sucks at hockey. We've had plenty of our own enforcers over the years, bit they could also chip in offensively from time to time. -

He has already done as well as it is possible to do at every elite level -- NHL, Olympics, world championships. He may not feel he has anything left to prove. He could make a lot of money at Michigan, get job security that is unimaginable in pro hockey, live in his current house and face an entirely new set of challenges. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility in the least. -

Next year might be Babcock's last...........or it might not be. It's basically, it's the offseason and there's not much else to talk about, so let's get some conversation going. -

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?
Hockeymom1960 reacted to Nev for a post in a topic
What? This makes no sense whatsoever? This "mess" is of Burke's making. The players are Burke's, the coach is Burke's. The Leafs failed to make the playoffs season after season under Burke. The year he was fired, his team of players and his coach gave one of the most spectacular choke jobs of all time. So 7 (?) seasons of Burke's Leafs, 1 playoff appearance, 1 first round exit. In Vancouver he did nothing. In Anaheim, his patented strategy of throwing players at the wall and seeing who sticks, combined with the stars aligning (Niedermeyer falling into his lap, getting Beachamin a player he admitted he'd never heard of, Getzlaf and Perry on ELCs) for one season. The following season he continued to throw players at the wall throwing piles of money at the likes of Bertuzzi and Schneider and through being "left alone" started to dismantle one of the best post lockout teams. And in Toronto he continued to do nothing. A huge bunch of trades, FA signings.....and the team is no better than they were 7 years ago. But he likes fighters, and the Canadian media loves him, so he ends up with this massively over-blown reputation. -

Regner: Next year could be Babcock's last
Frozen-Man reacted to VM1138 for a post in a topic
I hate articles like this. They're increasingly common. Regner is clearly reaching for conclusions. Nothing here indicates next year will be his last. What Babcock has stated in other interviews as well is that he can get a job anywhere, so he's not concerned with getting some long term big-money deal. Only people who worry about the future of their careers do that. He just wants to take it year by year. That means he could be here another 10, or he could be gone next year. Either way, nothing here supports Babcock's leaning one way or the other. But hey, page hits, I guess. I wrote this in another thread, but the whole coach getting stale thing doesn't really apply to Babcock anymore. There's such a huge turnover in players that next year's team and the one after that will be almost entirely different than the ones during most of his tenure. So it's like getting a fresh start. Plus, Babcock loves coaching young guys and building their game. He can do that in Detroit just as easily as anywhere else. At least here he has competent management to work with. -
1 pointEricsson is nasty along the boards, but I'll agree with Dickie (first?) that he's not a big open ice hitter. However, to say he isn't physical (as someone else implied) is untrue. Exhibit A: Last year's Chicago series. See below:

No to Miller. Not getting younger. Sure he is a local and his brother but as far as this organization at this moment...no. Ten years ago was another story. Now if you said Johnathan Quick wants to play here then we can talk. Miller and Howard are, I think, the same level and the fact that Howard is a bit younger tilts me to keeping him. He had a bad season. If it continues, yes, make a change. But this year was crazy in almost every regard all over the roster. Give him a season to fix it. -
