    Dan Cleary may return...sigh

We have plenty of Veteran Slots with Grand Rapids available this season. Tootoo, Emmerton, McIntyre, and Eaves are all gone, and Evans and Grant aren't signed. Even with them brought back we still have a spot open for another vet. And as bad as Cleary is now a days, he's still better than almost all of those guys. He won't hurt Grand Rapids at all...The Wings on the other hand would be insane to give him a spot.

    Dan Cleary may return...sigh

This post brought to you by the year 2007. In all seriousness, I felt the same way about Cleary too years ago but he isn't a remotely effective NHL player any longer. I wish Franzen had Cleary's heart. Beyond that, Cleary gave everything he had and finally just broke down physically. Take a job within the organization that doesn't involve playing hockey.

    Eaves is OUT in Nashville

I still like Eaves more than Miller, but unfortunately injuries derailed any real shot Eaves had at sticking with the Red Wings. I hope he finds a job somewhere in the NHL.

Mrazek needs to play. If Howard is healthy, he's playing 60 games or so, leaving less than 25 for the backup. It's not very often that a kid with waiver exemptions is brought in to backup an established starter. It also gives them a 3rd goalie that they can trust to com in and play if there is a long term injury. Would you really like to see a tandem of Mrazek and McCollum for a month if Howard goes down with a serious injury? This way Mrazek can come up and split time with a guy who has shown he can be at least adequate in Gustavsson.

He won't be taking a spot away from a kid, he'll be playing in Tootoo's spot.

As long as he never see's the ice in a Wings jersey again I'm all for keeping him in Grand Rapids. Having gone through the amount of struggles he did as a kid entering the league I think he would be an excellent mentor for the prospects teaching them what it takes to be a pro hockey player. As much as I hated seeing him on the ice the last couple years the one thing I can't take away from him is his effort, the guy works as hard as anyone on the ice and if he can instill that in a kid like Mantha he'll be damn near unstoppable at the NHL level.

Don't like it at all. Mrazek doesn't need another year in Grand Rapids with nothing to prove. Monster is too much of a risk as a backup and quite frankly, he wasn't good the second half of the season either.

Because he doesn't score 5 goals a game like he did that one time. Therefore he is lazy and he sucks and he is overpaid.

I'm ok with this if he plays for free and doesn't play.

Really . I mean really Holland? For F sakes buddy.....what has happened to you? Cleary was an awesome wing. Heart of a lion and blah, blah, blah but come ON man. It's not 2003 anymore. He should not have been signed last year and to even think you may be taking a spot away from Jurco or another potential young guy , to see what the they can do is beyond ridiculous. Who made allowed this team to make the playoffs this year? It wasn't the vets- Cleary, Alfie, Bert or. Sammy.....it was youth. We need speed, we need goals and we need a power forward. What of those three does Dan Cleary possess? Right....none. Phew...end rant.

They didn't say they wanted changes, they just said they wanted to get farther in the playoffs next year. Change in outcome not necessarily the roster. I feel our biggest problems this year were injuries and inexperience in the playoffs. Sheahan, Jurco, Nyquist, Tatar, Smith, Glendening, etc. have added experience. With that and If Z, Dats, Weiss, and Ericsson are healthy in the playoffs I feel we're a very different team. Add to that one of our D prospects stepping up and possibly Mantha or Pulkinen(still haven't learned how to spell it) and I'm really excited about our chances. We've also added by subtraction.

    Trading up?

And there's a reason my point is obvious. Trading away your franchise player and captain for an overhyped draft pick isn't a calculated risk, it's NHL 14 fantasy la la land.

It isn't hard to grasp, it is just hard to 100% believe - considering he beat out Nyquist last season when he had absolutely no business being on the team in the first place, it is not out of the realm of possibility to believe they might inexplicably give him a spot over some other youngster to start this season as well (Jurco, Mantha maybe). I think that's what is worrying most folks. My other issue is, I don't even particularly want him taking up a spot on GR either.

I feel terrible for him the guy deserves to play an injury free season and show the teams what he can do. Maybe he should put on a few more pounds in order to become a physical fourth liner.

Whoa Whoa Whoa, don't everybody go blaming Holland here. Babs was the one who wanted him back. Babs was the reason he left money on the table in Philly. And Babs was the reason he got a commitment beyond last year from the Wings. If Holland had his say Dan Cleary would be entering the second year of his three year contract with the Flyers right now.

    Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

If you're looking for FA acquisitions, yes, you'll be sorely disappointed. The kids will be another year better and our vets will indeed have injuries, although I don't think those can get any worse than last year. We are shedding Bertuzzi, Sammy, possibly Q, and likely sending Cleary to the minors. That should bring smiles to everyone around here.

I'm not really sure what's going on with Cleary here. Maybe he's good with the younger players or something. 15 points in 48 games last year and 8 points in 52 games this year doesn't exactly scream re-sign. Plus, he's injury prone and can't really be relied on at this point.
