Quincey re-signed by DET. 2 yr s $4.25 mill AAV

So re-signing one player (whom, while he had a shocking first half, had a very very solid second) means we are doomed to the annals of hell for a while? Seriously? This team was injury depleted and still made the playoffs. The emergence of the kids nullifies the signing of a solid stay at home defensemen. All I can say is meh. So we struck out in free agency today. Big deal. This team has more than enough to be optimistic about right now. Getting a known commodity won't hurt us. And yes I know, everyone here will say the Q sucks. And they'd be right about his first half performance, wrong about the second, in which he was one of our better blue liners -

You know, it really amazes me how quickly everyone seems to just want to fire KH and blow up the ship. And because of what exactly? We re-signed a guy who played well for us in the second half and has a proven track record of being a solid 3-4 D man. So we didn't sign any big name free agents, and? Did we really want Boyle here for 3 years? No. Orpik for 5 years and $5.5m? No. Niskanen for 7 years? I didn't. Stralman for 5 years? No. The list goes on and on. Guys who are cashing in on one or two good years (besides Boyle) and using the thin market to drive up their prices. It is frankly, a joke. The worst thing the wings could have done was to sign someone like that for a massive term which locks us in, blocking the path for 1 or 2 kids when they are ready either this season or next. Why is it that we are so quick to lambast something that we don't like, yet it takes 100 things to satisfy us? I mean, for crying out loud, we're not the Leafs. It's not like we haven't won a cup in the last 50 years. And also, it's not even like we're not competitive anymore. This team was a playoff team. Granted, the last 2 years have been touch and go, but 2 years ago we took the cup champs to 7 and had them on the ropes. In that 2012-13 roster, there were 26 players who were part of this seasons roster. 26!!!!!!!! And this season, most were injured, and yet somehow, due to some strong play of guys who will form the future of this team, we made it in. There is, quite clearly, a rebuild in progress at the moment. And it amazes me how people can't seem to get excited about the future prospects of Dekeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Jurco, Sproul, Marchenko, Ouellet, Mantha, Mrazek. Combined with a healthy D and Z and the other GOOD pieces we have on this team. So what's changed? Why has everyone become so despondent, when really, I think our time is coming right around the corner. Maybe not this year, but the year after for sure. If our kids continue trending upwards, we'll be right up there. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but to ignore the obvious positives that are emanating from this teams future and insist on throwing everything out in the trash just because we struck out on 1 day of the year is, in my eyes, nuts. -

Quincey>Lashoff, Kindl Cap hit is pretty much irrelevant since nobody wants our money. 2 years kind of stings. He had us by the balls but this deal hardly holds us back from improving -

"My first priority was to be on a good team." -Ehrhoff. Holy crap. Just humiliating. That article also takes a dig at the Wings not being able to buy their team. That pisses me off. That wasn't even really the case in the pre-cap era. We spent a lot, but we got the right players. I'm thinking it's Babcock. Almost every player suffers individually under his reign, and that lowers their future value. Case in point: no one really wants any of our players except for Nyquist, Jurco or maybe Tatar. So coming to Detroit could actually be bad for their careers. He just doesn't seem to utilize some players where they would be strongest (Smith, Cleary, Quincey, Kindl, etc.) -

Really. Because last time I checked, the “cap era” began in 2006 right? 2006 - President’s trophy 2007 - WCF 2008 - Stanley Cup champions 2009 - SCF Anyway, you can credit Lidstrom, Bowman, Nill, Captain America, Marion Illitch’s hairdresser, whoever the f***. Doesn’t matter. The results above speak for themselves and they all most definitely happened in the cap era. I know it seems like I’m defending Holland but really I’m not. I’d never dream of it today. I’m just saying there has to be a line of sensible thought drawn through all of this mess, and maybe that starts by toning down the hyperbole. -

4 pointsWeiss didn't pass, Alfie didn't pass. Datsyuk resigned, Kronwall resigned. What do you want? We can't sign everyone. There are 29 other teams that are trying to get better just like we are. Do you want us to overpay someone just to say we signed them then to be stuck with a horrible cap hit for someone who isn't worth it 4-5 years down the road when we need to resign a bunch of our young guys? We are building for the next 8-12 years not the next 2. People can't get that through their heads.

Obviously I'm disappointing we didn't get better players...but am I the only one who doesn't think Quincey is THAT bad? If Holland can trade for a top 2 defenseman like he said was his backup plan was without giving too much away I'll be happy to have Quincey. He is a serviceable bottom 4 defenseman. -

That would be more frustrating to watch than Kindl and Lashoff in these past playoffs. Pair a kid with someone with experience and defensibly responsible. Kronwall-E Deke-Smith Q-Ouellet Lashoff That doesn't look as bad as many here are making it out to be. Not as good as it could have been, I agree. But Quincey was very good late in the season and the playoffs. If he can keep that up, I'm fine with him being here. It's just 2 years. Plenty of time for kids to get some experience and try and steal his roster spot in 2 years time. Not the end of the world, folks. -

I want Holland to do his job well. He's been flailing over the last several years. The reason they're not coming here is because players aren't excited at the prospect of playing for the Red Wings anymore. That's on Holland. No one is saying his job isn't extremely difficult, but it's that way for 29 other GM's. As I said in another thread, replace Holland's name with Dan Cleary. Cleary outworks just about everyone on the team which is admirable but he simply doesn't get the results to be competitive at the NHL level. Is that acceptable because he's a great guy who's trying with everything he's got? I don't care how hard Holland tried. Results matter. He's not getting any. -

The bottom pairing was the issue. Not Q. Quincey and Dekeyser were actually very solid together. Sure he is overpaid, but it's free agency. Everyone is. People really need to chill. Other UFA's didn't want to come here. Get over it. -

I think a lot of people realize how terrible this Quincey signing is, but I don't think as many have a grasp of how much it means in the big picture. It's just utterly horrendous. Even if the guy wasn't as bad as he is, it's just such a terrible thing to go and do when our image already in the toilet. You do nothing and you can at least go on trying to minimize what happened today, but signing Quincey to that deal was a grand acknowledgement of the fact that this off-season is already an epic disaster for the Detroit Red Wings. -

Honestly, I don't disagree with you on several of these points. However, in my opinion, there's very little to like about signing Kyle Quincey. Many people (including myself) were advocating a stop-gap, someone to let the kids slip into the line-up without them being overwhelmed. At the very least, those stop-gaps brought something extra to the table - Boyle and Gilbert could help the PP, Stralman and Morris the PK. What does Quincey bring? Dead serious, I don't have a real answer to that question, no matter how hard I try. To call the guy a solid #3-4 defender just doesn't ring true to me. He doesn't put up points, he doesn't hit or block many shots. He takes several, poorly timed penalties. To his credit, the guy's swept a few pucks out from right in front of the goal line, but all in all, I'd say Kyle Quincey is just... there. He exists and has the physical endurance to play "top 4 minutes" on this team, and he was given a raise? I think the real issue behind the signing is that it comes off as a panic move - it feels like it was made to just barely cling on, to "play it safe". I think playing it safe would have been grabbing Boyle, Gilbert, Morris, etc. I know those guys didn't want to be here, wanted term, etc. but grabbing Kyle Quincey strikes me as playing it scared. It reminds me of grabbing Legwand because Holland needed this team to squeeze into the post-season. I see the positives going forward - I see the youth of this team and the defensive core that is shaping up. What I also see is that Kyle Quincey is a bane on this team's blueline - he's not going to pass anything onto the kids, and he won't be adding anything positive to this team's defense corps for the next two seasons. He doesn't ruin this team's future - he just wades in the water doing nothing around it. -

You. I like you. +1,000,000 We are building for the future while still being competitive. Mantha, Sheahan, Goose, Tats, Jurco, Ouellete, Sproul, Marchenko, Smith, Dekeyser, Larkin, AA2, Pulks, Mrazek. Those are the guys who are gonna win us our next championship. Those are the guys that will lure in the top UFA's that want to win a cup. The future is so bright but people refuse to see anything but OMG WE SIGNED QUINCEY. WORST DMAN EVER. At least he didn't miss any games to injury last year. Probably like the only guy on the team to play all 82. Look at how many games we lost to injury/late callups last year! Pavel only played 45 games. Z played 45. Big E played 48. Weiss 26. Franzen 54. Helm 42. Goose 57, Sheahan 42. Not a single one of the top 4 C's on our roster played more than 45 games! It's hard to believe we can be struck with that much bad luck again this year. I can't see any way in which we are a worse team this year than last year. -

It's because ever since the Salary Cap, Holland has consistently either been afraid to pull the trigger on the top free agents, or been unable to land the top free agents and create a franchise that players want to play for. Sure he has had to deal with losing some of the greats (aka Lidstrom) but he has been content with keeping this team a competitive first round team while our super star players continue to age. He is a GM that was spoiled early in his tenure when everyone wanted to come here and take a pay cut pre-salary cap and now does not know how to handle when the big fish no longer want the lure. -

I defended Holland last summer, the trade deadline, and now... FED UP get rid of this sack of useless potatoes. He, Quincey and Cleary can go to a beach together and never return. Seriously, not only did he sign the guy NOBODY wanted back, but he gave him a raise to boot, and he was already way overpaid before. Missed out on every free agent?!? EVERY ONE?!? not a single player in the nhl wants to go to Detroit? I don't care what anyone says, Jim was the better choice for GM, look at the things he has done in dallas -

This is a broken record, but if Pav and Z have a healthy year and Weiss doesn't turn out to be a bust we have a pretty good set of forwards with the young kids and if we do make a trade we should have a better team this year. Two seasons ago we came within a single goal of beating the Stanley Cup winners. Last year was s***ty, but look at our injuries we had. We're not as bad as people think. -

Worst place to be in hockey. The Wings are turning into the Calgary Flames. Lingering in mediocrity and Holland is content to keep the playoff streak alive. Honestly, it will never happen, but shouldn't the Wings consider moving Z and/or Pavel? They aren't true contenders and aren't bad enough to get high draft picks to make an immediate impact (or they rot in Grand Rapids for four years anyways). I don't know, after today, I'm at a loss. Feel like it might be time to just tear it down entirely and rebuild. -
3 pointsI've generally been quiet and tried to avoid any sensational posts...but damn...Quincey again, with a raise? I would have been happier signing no one. Was Jim Nill the real brains of this operation?
