You didn't need to say it in your post. Your opinion on Holland has been well stated over the past year. Booth is just as stupid a signing as Cleary, and then some, because when healthy, Cleary is an "every day-er" that's only one season removed from being one of our better playoff performers in 2013. Booth has had two good seasons with Florida and hasn't done jack squat in 3 years. But the grass is always greener............ -

I'm betting most Wings fans could never envision Chelios playing for the Wings either. -

I agree with you there, like I said, I don't think either is a bad deal. I think the Booth deal is a better one, but I certainly wouldn't look at that one as a steal and think of the Cleary one as a terrible deal. Both are low risk deals and while the Booth one is better (imo), it certainly isn't by a huge amount. -

It's not so much that Cleary is better than Booth. It's that siging Cleary instead of Booth is not the scrotum-crushingly bad move that a few here were eager to declare. Neither guy has been healthy recently. Booth has had some good regular seasons and Cleary has had some good playoffs. To me it's a wash. Booth might get the edge based on age where Cleary might get the edge based on time-served and past history (I know this is an unpopular opinion). Regardless, it's certainly not a scenario where Booth at 1M is an unbelievable steal and Cleary at 1.5M makes Holland a terrible GM. (I know this is not how you feel, but my original response was directed at less even-tempered LGWers) -

No that is not what I am saying. It's because he makes promises to washed up players like cleary and signs Quincey for over four mill per he could have signed another comparable left handed defensemen about 1.5 mill per. He tends to get bent over the barrel more than most GM's in the NHL. He is overly cautious and then when he realizes he has come up empty handed he makes a quick fix trade or signing that doesn't really help the team. -

Comments like these make me want to cancel my subscription to LGWs. Holland is now all of a sudden a bad GM because he didn't sign David friggin Booth? Please. -

Ferraro re-signed: 1-year $550K (2-way)
Hockeymom1960 reacted to rick zombo for a post in a topic
Worth it's own thread perhaps, but mostly a "meh" signing? The price is right: 1 year, 2 way, 550k. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2014/07/detroit_red_wings_re-sign_forw_1.html -

f*** YEAH! Did you guys hear the Wings just acquired a Fierro! Ohhhhhh, a Ferraro. Was it Ray? No? Oh, then I don't care! -
1 pointI agree that it would suck to lose him for nothing, as goes for any asset, but Landon Ferraro, in my opinion is a fringe NHL player at best. Besides we more than made up for the potential loss with all the other signings this offseason. Surely one of the 6 or 7 guys we signed (Miele, Zengerle, Porter, Nosek, Berschbach, Hirschfield, Campbell) will become equal to or better than Ferraro. Now if we lose Callahan for nothing, I will be pissed.

My bet is he gets waived, clears and spends another year down in Grand Rapids. I'm really hoping Callahan sticks as the 14th forward and gets in some games... -

Confused on the direction of this team going forward
krsmith17 reacted to Z Winged Dangler for a post in a topic
No Helm is the worst part. I'd love to see the speed on a line of Helm-Larkin-Athaniesou. That line up makes me actually want to get NHL Gamecenter after this year. I wish we could swap KFQ for Ouellet though. His positioning, vision and 1st pass make him a huge asset. One can assume Marchenko's gonna make a push soon too, so Ericsson will have to play exceptional to keep that spot with Kronwall. -
1 pointMy bachelors was in a degree relating to social stats. During that time I did my best to relate everything I did to sports (I'm not claiming to be an expert). But, when looking at advanced stats, Tatar is awesome. As in, he stand out the most. Nyquist also has formidable advanced stats. Those two are clearly ahead of the curve. Just like the opinions we would paint.

Hockeymom1960 reacted to rick zombo for a post in a topic
Growth from within? This is fun to think about: Nyquist - Datsyuk - Mantha Tatar - Sheahan - Jurco Zetterberg - Larkin - Abdlekader Athanasiou - Nastasiuk - Bertuzzi McKee Pulkinnen Kronwall - DeKeyser Ouellet - Sproul Smith - Marchenko Backman Mrazek Howard Lot’s of character in that forward group. Not sure if Pavel can still pivot on the first line. P.S. Mrazek wins the Conn Smyth -

Kind of hard to do. This roster won't win a cup. It'll involve FA and/or trades. But people need to be added. -
1 pointTatar had a good rookie year. But he's still unproven so I'm not sure why people think he should get his payday now. He'll get a prove it contract and that's what's best for both sides. As far as people comparing Tats and Pavs rookie years, it honestly means nothing. Peter Mueller had a comparable rookie year to Anze Kopitar, who both had had better years than Patrice Bergeron, and they all had worse years than Dany Heatley. Now two of them are scrubs and 2 are elite forwards. I'm glad Tatar had a good rookie year, now he has to prove he can continue to do that and improve.

Zombo, there is nothing wrong with being disappointed in Holland. I simply said Booth was a hometown kid, more than likely gave Holland a call because most hometown kids do dream of playing for their childhood team. But Holland is happy with his team and won't do another thing until he signs Alfie. BTW David Friggin Booth is tons better than Dan s***stain Cleary. Booth has proven to have chemistry with Weiss and that kind of chemistry is valuable around this league. I was not saying that Booth was going to be the savior of this team, but I'd rather have Booth and 30-40 points at $1.1M than Cleary and his 10 games at $2.75M and probably 0-5 points. Just saying. And btw, where in my post did I say Holland is a bad GM? So, when you decide to comment on someone's quote, make sure you are quoting the correct post. -

Cleary is making more than Booth too? Hey Holland, Booth is a local kid, has some chemistry with Weiss, he just signed for $1.1M... I am just baffled. Baffled. Why the hell wouldn't Holland give Booth a 1 year try? All these guys that are getting bought out are signing 1 year deals for the cheap to earn the next big deal. You have to figure Booth's camp called Holland. Holland could have had him for pennies, now when he is a UFA next season, he will get a huge raise...He obviously didn't go to TO to win a Cup next year (like Heatley is trying to do and Richards as well.) He was looking for a job to earn a fatter paycheck next season and Holland isn't even answering phone calls he is happy with his team and waiting to sign Alfie. I get more and more mad everyday watching quality (not high end, but quality) talent go elsewhere for less money than Cleary and #KFQ signed for...and ALL better than Cleary and #KFQ... Sorry guys, its just so hard not to get frustrated and confused... -

Alfie wants to play

The Detroit Red Wings have long had the philosophy that prospects need to be "ripe" before they make the jump to the National Hockey League. That means after getting drafted, our prospects spend around 3-5 years between junior or overseas and the AHL before finally getting their shot in the NHL. This has proven to be successful for many years now and I don't see them drastically changing that system any time soon. I don't see there being much of a chance that Mantha makes the big club this season, despite how highly fans, media and management regard him, nor do I think Jurco will start the season in the NHL. I'm actually a fan of the Red Wing way, of over ripening players, and I like the idea of having a farm oozing with talent. Depth is probably the biggest key to a teams success in the league today, and because of our drafting, development and ripening methods, we are definitely stacked with depth in the minors. There is a reason players like Nyquist and Tatar were able to jump into the NHL with little to no growing pains, while highly regarded players drafted by other teams get thrown in the fire too early and flame out due to not being ready, and having their confidence destroyed. I'm just as excited for all these kids as anyone but I think it would be a huge mistake to throw them in the best league in the world before they're fully ready, both physically and mentally. In my opinion, on the back end, Marchenko could be ready for full time duty in the NHL, other than that I think Backman, Ouellet, Sproul and Jensen can all use more seasoning in the AHL. Up front, Jurco is the closest to being ready, but could still use another season down in the minors, along with Pulkkinen, Mantha, Athanasiou, etc. Anyway, point being, I don't think there is any harm in resigning a future hall-of-famer, veteran like Alfredsson, allowing all of our forward prospects another season in Grand Rapids to round out there game. Having these guys getting top line minutes and loads of PP time down in Grand Rapids, to me is a lot more beneficial than getting 3rd line minutes and no PP time up in Detroit. As for our RFA's that are not waiver exempt, I don't think there is any chance whatsoever that any team picks up Nestrasil, with a slim chance a team takes a chance on Ferraro, although that may be even less likely now with uncle Tony now as the assistant coach. My only fear is that we lose Callahan. The kid is coming off a career year with the Griffins, is an absolute warrior and would be a great addition to any teams 4th line. I hope Holland doesn't give any team the chance to claim him. No he's not going to put up a lot of points but I think he would be a huge loss... -

I agree. But in addition to the whole dad dying thing, he also was a real good sport about starting the season on the bench after he had clearly played his way onto the team, as well as being a good sport about spending probably a year longer in the AHL than he needed to. Tatar, despite what some folks think, has had a really good attitude the entire time he's been in Detroit. I think fans just get worried because he'd the kind of guy who says he's disappointed when he is, or pissed off, or whatever. So they always think he's got an attitude. He doesn't. He's just up front about how he's feeling, which is unique for a Red Wing. -
