CBJ's Jack Johnson files for bankruptcy
Ally and 4 others reacted to haroldsnepsts for a post in a topic
It's not like he gave the money to his mom and said "go play the stock market." According to one source she did things like bought a house in Manhattan beach with his money, then lied to him saying they paid for it with a relative's inheritance. So it's not just about ignorance of handling money and more about his parents completely taking advantage of him and not looking out for his best interests. Obviously in hindsight he should've found a financial adviser, but I can imagine being 25 years old, who just signed this giant contract. There's people all around you licking their chops to get at that money and take advantage of you, so who do you trust? You just don't expect it to be your parents. -

Agreed. When I first saw the headline I thought "what a moron." But reading more about it and hearing what his parents did puts it in a whole different light for me. I guess you can blame him for being naive and not picking up on the problem earlier, but it's his friggin parents. The guy is likely busy playing hockey and trusting that his mother will be handling things and looking out for his best interests. Not having an agent didn't help. Agents are often evil, but a necessary one in the entertainment business. -

He's an idiot? Really? I can't speak for anyone else, but the last person in this world I'd expect to screw me over financially is my mother. It's one thing to be awful with money, but what they did with his money goes beyond being financially irresponsible - they milked the **** out of him. They treated him like a cash cow and ran his debt into the ground. The amount they spent/lost has more to do with their greed and taking advantage of a situation than it does with making smart decisions. Disgusting on their part. -

You are assuming he expected them to make the financial transactions themselves, versus them being the ones to go out and find financial advisors to handle his money. He was a 25 year old who just signed a contract for 30 million dollars, which isn't quite the same situation as having your parents on your checking account. It's a tremendous amount of money and people start coming out of the woodwork to get a piece of it. So he put it in the hands of people he trusted while he went out and earned it. I'd venture to guess he's not the only pro athlete who's done this and most of the time it works out. I'm not sure why that's so hard for you to pick up on. -

Sometimes you make mistakes....JJ trusted his parents, Fedorov trusted a financial advisor and gave him millions and millions to invest...that didn't work out too good for Sergei. He thought he was hiring a professional and JJ thought he was in good hands with his parents. Greed kills and nobody is immune to now and again. -

For some reason I assumed that all your investments were in the form of gold doubloons and were buried intermittently around your densely covered acreage. I'm wowed. -

That's not even the point, but go ahead with that. There's a difference between smart financial planning and people blowing all of your money without telling you. I had the same reaction. -

Not saying I'd trust him with millions of dollars, but you can't call him stupid for thinking his parents would have his best interest at heart. He made a mistake. -

Why does there seem to be some sort of weird, pathalogical, need to assign blame to each and every little thing that happens to this team? Smith went back out because he wanted to play, the coach probably wanted him to play, and the folks signing his checks want him to play. A cut on his hand is a minor injury. The kind that hockey players sustain CONSTANTLY throughout a season. Think about all the times that you see blood in the course of a hockey season. All of those are cuts, and all of those have the potential to get infected. Most don't. This one did. It's not anyone's fault. It just happened. -

The solution to the problem is simple : All of this of course wouldn't have happened with McGrattan...... -

Mantha getting closer.

Here's an interesting tidbit I just ran across in a Khan article about Nestrasil... "[Nestrasil] would have been buried further down the depth chart once Pavel Datsyuk and Weiss return from injuries and after the club promotes top prospect Anthony Mantha, which it will likely do if he produces in the AHL the next few weeks." The bolded part is interesting because until very recently Khan had repeatedly taken the stance that as a result of his injury (and lost training camp), it would be unlikely that Mantha would crack Detroit's roster this season. This sounds almost definitive. As in, someone told Khan (off the record) that he'll be promoted if he plays well out of the game. Usually Khan's good about acknowledging when he's speculating. That doesn't seem to be the case here. -

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?
Jesusberg and one other reacted to gcom007 for a post in a topic
Call me optimistic, but I still think it'll be interesting to see how Weiss responds when actually getting a chance. Based on his history, he's plenty capable of becoming an important part of this team's offense moving forward. That was the goal when signing him and it's still possible that he could rise to meet that goal, and perhaps be better if given the right opportunities in time. And yeah, I get it, it's unlikely, and perhaps a bit crazy to think that at this point, but I think you've got to see how he does as a regular in the lineup before you do anything drastic. -

For those of us who didn't catch the game. Not much of a fight but you can see Smith holding his hand immediately afterwards. -

Agreed, but you'd think they would've cleaned it and covered it after the fight. It seems a little odd an infection shows up that fast. I'm really starting to wonder about the Wings training staff. -

The one good thing for Johnson here is that he still has 7-8 good years left of earning potential. -

Yeah, I guess I was unclear what I meant. My post does say I think it'll be LIds, Feds, Pronger - and that'll be deserving. I've just always hated Pronger - I kind of just meant anyone else instead of that guy. There's no way the Kariya should actually be there ahead of Pronger. That fact that you guys got up in arms shows that there's no real question about this class, though. I did really like Kariya's character as a player, though - great speed, vision. But his career was messed up by concussions and he played on some pretty bad teams. -

I'm not sure if those of you that commented on the game actually watched the game or not but Mantha played great. It was his first game of pro hockey, no one was expecting him to have a 3 or 4 point night like he did regularly in junior. Every time he touched the puck he made things happen, he was dominant, despite not making it on the score sheet and registering only one shot on goal. The thing that impresses me the most is his size, and the fact that he uses that size to his advantage. He was a huge player in junior, but he was a boy amongst men down there, and he seemed reluctant to make those big hits. He sure wasn't last night, he laid a few great hits. There were a couple times when he had the puck, skating along the boards and he man-handled the opposition. There were two instances that I remember, in which he was double teamed by the Stars defenders in the offensive zone and he easily came away with the puck, he was winning every puck battle. Although he only registered the one shot, he did ring one off the post in the third, and it was sitting there in the crease but Pulkkinen couldn't get a stick on it to bury the rebound. He was on the ice for a goal for and a goal against but finished with a -1 because both goals came on the Griffins power-play. The Stars, Travis Morin scored a short-handed goal in the first, which actually came off a bad giveaway by Mantha, it was on his very first shift of the game, imagine the nerves he was feeling, but after that one giveaway he played unbelievable. He had the *third assist* on the Griffins first goal that came on the power-play to start the second period. All in all I was very impressed with his pro debut, and he is going to be a great player. -
