I'm not sure what exactly you're arguing. This is a discussion of ROY. Regardless lets take your whole "not better defensively quote". Currently Larkin leads all 4 top rookies (Domi, Panarin, Eichel) in takeaways and has the least amount of giveaways. Now extending it to our own roster - He has less giveaways per game than Datsyuk AND Zetterberg. Kills penalties (while the other two don't and probably can't at this point in their careers) has a higher takeaway rate than Zetterberg and only below Datsyuk by .05 in terms of takeaways per game. Has higher rate of defensive zone starts than Datsyuk but less than Zetterberg. Datsyuk and Z might have been great players at one time but they have significantly declined (although Datsyuk has been really good the last few games). They're still great players but not the elite players they once were. As far as Larkin is concerned, he's obviously not an elite player yet but his impact on the team has been higher than Datsyuk and Zetterbergs. He is their best player on ice in all situations even if his peak potential isn't what Datsyuk or Zetterberg's is (yet). Z and D had an extremely high potential but they can't play at that potential they once did.

Better historically/inherently maybe but not better for the team currently. Larkin is their best player atm. Similar to how Crosby is better than Malkin yet Malkin has been Pittsburg's best player this season (and as a side note was picked for AS game over Crosby). It's a quite simply analogy really. Regardless, with the way Larkin's resume for the year is piling up he's making a good run for the Calder. Which is the main point anyway.

It's about time they give Jensen a shot. I've been saying he's deserved one since last year

. Sure, maybe a 2008 version of Z/D would have been picked, but in 2015/16 Larkin is tied for team points and leader in goals. Not to mention pre-all star selection Datsyuk was playing pretty bad, while Zetterberg was going through his usual slump, all the while Larkin was closing the gap in team points.

I actually think Holland was right in keeping Kindl at that point in time. Did he refuse to waive him? Yes. ..but wasn't that the plan all along? See if you can make a worthwhile trade for him before just tossing him aside? Later in the year you're looking at the prospect of having a new coach in the coming season; is it better to see if a player like Kindl will pick up his play under that new coach or to waive him without giving him the chance? See if he's got more value in a trade then? ...and It's not at the expense of your younger players if the plan is to let them over-ripen in the AHL. He's kinda been doing it for years, so I don't see why we're at all surprised when it happens. (Nyquist, Tatar, Pulks, Jurcs, the list goes on and on) I'm not saying it's right or that I agree with it, but there are reasons behind it. It's not Holland being stubborn or not doing anything or really refusing. It's call doing his job in the manner that he sees fit. Just because we don't happen to like it doesn't mean that it doesn't make sense to the General Manager and his plan. You're surely welcome to call him out on it, but it's not making and breaking the team. No GM has any control over being able to get the guys you want to clear waivers to clear and the guys you want to get picked up to get picked up. Case in point: Chicago and Bryan Bickell (not claimed) Viktor Tikhonov (claimed)

Whats funny is, the guy only has 14 more points that Larkin, it's not like he is blowing Larkin out of the water in that catagory. Will he slow down, maybe not, but Larkin could go on a spree like he did to start the year and close that gap a bit...but everyone is talking that Panarin is "so far" ahead of Larkin, when in fact, 14 points is NOT unsurpassable. The fact that he was chosen to go to the All-Star Game speaks volumes of how he is viewed in the NHL, plus the fact that he is a 19 yo pure rookie, leading his team in points and the +/- speaks volumes too. I know the +/- stat is not the best stat, but since Panarin is only a +8 and Kane is +23, shows me that Panarin isn't on the ice in all the important situations as Kane and, in our case, Larkin is. I am very bias and want him to win, but in reality he does have a strong case for actually winning it....that being said, so did Yzerman over Barrasso, Fedorov over Belfour and Zetterberg over Jackman... One other thing we may be missing, what is the amount of games needed to be played by a goalie to qualify for having a rookie season, last year Mrazek played in 29 games, started 26. If he didn't qualify as a rookie last season, he could be up for it this season, right now he sits at .932 SV% and 2.03 GAA...3rd and 5th in the NHL repsectively. If not ROY then serious Vezina talk if he continues this pace...

We're not talking half our team here, we are talking 2 out of 3 players. Ferrero was claimed, Andersson and Kindl were not claimed. I am sure every team has 1-2 guys that could go through waivers and not get claimed at any given time.

Hey bro.He had something like 5 points 4 games when we first waived him. Do you remember when people started including Janmark in their Calder votes like 5 games into the season, "Holland is so bad, blahblahblah, derpppderppp all star, rabble rabble calder" Ha.

Andersson isn't being assigned to GR yet according to Blashill. He's staying with the Wings. The waiver was just a formality to allow them to send him down and call up someone if/when necessary quickly without having to wait for the waiver period to make the move.

If Jurco can get into beast mode and unlock the potential many have seen, look out.

I was going to say something to the effect of, "if I could go back in time and watch this team," but if I went back to this time, I wouldn't have been born yet or would have just popped out. So I wouldn't understand what I was watching.

The heart wants Larkin to win the Calder, but it has been a curse. (Jackman over Zetterberg being the most egregious example I can think of off the top of my head). If he is runner up and ends up like the Wings, other notable runners up, I'm good with that. I do think Panarin's KHL experience should be considered. However, unless the sizeable scoring lead is significantly narrowed, it will be too much to ignore. Let him get the Calder and overpay him to cramp Chicago's cap.

As much as I rag on the all-star game the fact that Larkin was picked for it is also an eye opener. It somewhat indicates that he is the teams best player. If Eichel was his teams best player - he would have gotten picked. I think Larkin being such an impact player for his own team helps his case a lot. I think it will come down to Panarin or Larkin. I seriously don't see Domi or Eichel winning it unless they really tear it up to finish the season. Personally I'd rather he get second place cause the ROY winner is like a curse more often than not.

I dont think Eichel or Domi would win it over Larkin because they're playing center. There is no indication that they judge that way. Larkin played on every line. PP and kills penalties at times. He's centered a couple games too. He plays what his coach wants him to

Awesome thread! love the humor haha. we all know "that one guy" right? Really wish Larkin passes Panarin and gets the ROY award. He's been better than great. This young blood boost infused over the past few years has shaped a new Red Wings era, and I see Larkin fitting right in the "C"enter of it. As you guys put it, Parayko sounds like a really good prospect and would be a much needed piece on the D with that colossal size of his. We have a Franchise Goalie in Petr, a League Phenom in Larkin. All we need is a D-man, yet Marchenko and Smith are making strong cases for themselves...in a lesser degree My closing argument for ROY would be: "Panarin's been carried by Kane. Larkin's carrying the Red Wings".

I'd do that in a heartbeat, a great guy making league minimum would get a car, some money and have a great experience.

How crazy will it be if his teammates keep setting him up and the other goalies are easy on him just to piss off the league by causing him to win the MVP award?
