I'd rather sign Green and have Hronek make the big club with Jensen or Hicketts as the 7th. Dekeyser Green Daley Ericsson Kronwall Hronek Jensen/Hicketts

I agree. Hronek plays a similar style game as Green, but he's not going to step in as a top three defenseman, logging 20+ minutes a night, on the top power-play. IF he is ready, and that's not even a guarantee, Green is the exact type of defenseman I'd want him learning from. I'm all for bringing Green back on a short term, one to two year contract. Ouellet is as good as traded. Jensen can be traded. Maybe one of Daley or Ericsson get traded at the deadline. There will be injuries. Maybe a player (Kronwall) misses significant time this season. Point is, re-signing Green doesn't mean that all the kids are doomed for Grand Rapids all season. Hicketts, Hronek and maybe even Cholowski or Sulak will get looks, if not full time roster spots at some point this season. Given the cost? Sure, Carlson is going to cost a nice bit in cap space, but that's all it's going to cost. Going after a player like Hanifin (or to a lesser extent, Faulk) is going to cost a ton in assets, plus just as much to re-sign in a few years time. It will likely cost our 6th overall, plus to get Hanifin. You'd get a few years of great value on his ELC, but after that, he's likely going to get PAID. At least you'd hope his play would warrant that. In saying that, I'd probably stay away from Carlson. It's not so much the cost though, as much as it is his age and where the team is at right now. Bean would be my number one target out of Carolina, just because of cost vs potential.

Not necessarily. It wouldn't matter to me if there were 18 solid D prospects in the system. If you have a guy who truly wants to be here (not a money chaser), who was just selected to the All-Star team, and is willing to take a shorter term, cost effective contract, then you absolutely sign that guy. Period. If that "blocks" an NHL ready kid from making the roster, than you make room by getting rid of other dead weight. If anyone is blocking Hronek, Cholowski, #6...it's guys like Jensen, HIcketts, and Ouellet, not Green. True, but from all of the articles I've read about Green, his comments seem genuine to me, not contrived. He's not the "grass is greener" type (no pun intended). I really think he truly would like to finish his career as a Red Wing, and as long as he's playing at or above his contract, I welcome it.

I agree with this, maybe Mantha is a Blake Wheeler type who will put it all together in his late 20's but that's a hell of a gamble. I haven't seen anything to suggest he'll be elite. Very good, yes, but not elite. A guy like Zadina or Wahlstrom has that kind of upside. A year ago Either one of those guys may have gone first or second overall. Zadina even reminds me a bit of Hischier. And if you wouldn't trade a guy like Mantha for a guy like that I don't know what to tell you.
  8. 1 point
Yeah, I can see this both ways. One way is saying, Zadina hasn't played in the NHL yet so you just can't know for absolute certainty what he'll be. The other way is that he really is THAT good and more than likely will be a 1st line winger for years and it won't take him long to get there. I'd be okay with trading up with Mantha as bait to get Zadina or Svechnikov so long as we hang on to our #6 and nab the best d-man available there. Zadina, to me, is more of a Laine type player. I don't feel like looking for it, but it was reported a short while back that Holland is looking at options to move up to #3 or down, but not out of the top 10. I'm pretty sure that rumor involved using the #6 to move up, though.

Don’t want to get all excited about this since there is no source. Going forward with Zadina, Larkin, Bouchard and Rasmussen is worth throwing out the prospect system and starting over. We won’t lose any sleep over this even if Mantha is a 30 goal scorer (maybe)
  10. 1 point
The problem with this theory is that NONE of what you're saying is a "guarantee". There's no guarantee that Zadina will be better than Mantha. There's no guarantee that Cholowski will be just another Smith / Kindl. And there's no guarantee that whoever we pick 30th and 33rd / 36th will be another Smith / Kindl / Sheahan / Jurco. I personally don't think Zadina will be significantly better than Mantha. By that, I mean both have the "potential" to be 35 goal scorers. Zadina may put up 10? 20? 30? more points than Mantha (I doubt it), and to me it's not worth all the other pieces lost. I also think Cholowski will be better than Smith and Kindl. He has the same skill set, but actually seems to have the hockey IQ that is needed to play at a high level as well. We could get a number of players in that 30-36 range that could develop into top 6 forwards / top 4 defensemen. I'm always for quality over quantity, but in this case, I think it would require a massive overpayment, and that's where I draw the line. Like I said though, I highly doubt Holland has any interest in making that sort of trade.

I get it. I really do. But when Carlson's contract was truly a problem (like in 5 years when the little ones start really getting paid) all those sandbaggers like Helm, Nielsen, Ericsson, Kronwall, etc. will be long off the books. Anyway, he won't be coming here. He won't. Not from Holland, at least.

7.5-8ish for 7 years? I’d do it. He may end up getting more because free agency bidding wars and whatnot. Re: why don’t we want him?.... I think it’s mostly money/not many people expect him to be interested in signing here. I don’t think he’d have a lot of interest either, but he’s still worth calling to see if there’s any mutual interest at all. But at the same time, I think he’ll re-sign in Washington before we get a chance to make that call.

Exactly. If Orpik can play his style and be effective at 37, I think Carlson would still have a lot to offer 6 or even 7 years into his deal. Ultimately, the thing I don't get is that we've been talking about this team getting better on D for 5 years now. Here's a chance to make it happen, and we don't want to because....why again? Money? Term? Timing? because now we don't want the D to be better? At least not for another 2.5 years? Because Carlson will stunt the growth of some plug like Hicketts ffs? IF he'd sign here for 7.5 or 8M x 7, Holland would be foolish not to do it.

On one hand, I agree that Carlson would probably cost too much for me to be comfortable with.. but on the other hand, he’s only 28 and if we could also make a deal for Bean; a defensive core of Carlson, Bean, #6 pick this year, Cholowski/whoever else pans out could look great a couple years down the line.

Perhaps Jack and Squat are the next coming of the Bruise Brothers? Or a defensive pair that one "Jacks" the opponent finished with a "Squat" Or are they WWE rasslers?

https://articles.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2018/06/mike_green_weighing_offers_fro.amp Here's the Khan article about Green/Carlson if anyone wants it. I don’t see Carlson coming here at all, and Khan pretty much says the same. But I do like that we’ve informed Green that we are not going to offer him 3 years.

Awful situation, and if the allegations are true Hoffman's GF is just horrible, but I don't get why people are mad at the Sens. What one player's GF does to another players wife on social media is not something that can be controlled by the team, and I'm pretty sure you can't reprimand a player for something his GF does.

I think most would prefer Hanifin, it’s just a matter of how many assets are you comfortable giving up for him. Bean would be way cheaper to acquire but Hanifin might be worth the price as he has already established himself as a very solid defenseman in the show.
  20. 1 point
No they don't. Yes, they are. If they were paid more in line with what middle 6 wingers make (Abby) and 3rd line defensive specialists make (Helm), Holland would have absolutely no problem trading either one without a NTC. While just about everyone agrees with the "overpaid" argument, the only ones who think they actually suck are LGWers, and I can think of about 30 other teams who would disagree with that assessment. BTW, just out of curiosity, why does everyone seem to prefer Bean over Hanifin? If I could choose between them,I would choose Hanifin.

I couldn't agree more. Dream scenario. There are also rumblings of the Jets possibly having issues re-signing Trouba again this summer. I'm sure they'll work something out, and much like Wahlstrom and Bean, it's just a pipedream, but imagine somehow acquiring Trouba as well... Our D could look something like this in a couple years time... DeKeyser - Trouba Bean - Bouchard Cholowski - Hronek And our top 6 could look something like this... Mantha - Larkin - Wahlstrom Bertuzzi - Rasmussen - Bokk But of course, none of this will happen. We won't make any meaningful trades or free agent signings, and we won't draft any of the players mentioned...
