1. He still might sign Martinez 2. Martinez will want 5 x 4 or sonething 3. Leddy is 4 years younger, probably better, and much cheaper in terms of "term" remaining 4. Yzerman probably gets a late 2nd back for Leddy at the 22 TDL. So essentially, you're renting a pretty solid vet for a season at the cost of maybe sliding a bit in the 2nd round.

Why dont you like this trade if you wanted to send Svech and the same pick to the Avs for Ryan Graves? Leddy is a lot better than Graves.

Alec Martinez would have been better and without a need to give up a draft pick.

we basically traded mantha for vrana, a 1st, and Leddy now. awesome trade imo. didn't really see a spot in the lineup Panik was good for anyway. Leddy will be a solid mentor for the young d-men, and isn't even that old himself. Still plenty of good hockey left in him.

No due to Covid he decided to stay over in Europe.

When you look at it this way...

Leddy is the isles icetime leader the last 6 seasons, over 120 playoff games, one cup. Looks like a 2022 first rounder to me, prime target at the deadline I would think

Leddy,Hronek and Stecher. Stecher was Team Canada´s best defenseman at the WC, played really solid for us and will give us a nice return at the deadline. Cholo, Lindström and DDK are bottom pairing players at best and replaceable and I think Seattle is going for a forward anyway. Honestly look at the three, Cholowski didn´t get his s*** together in three seasons and it´s not looking like he´s going to get it done anytime soon. Lindström will probably never make it permanently to the roster, maybe a fringe NHL´er and DDK is more injured than playing and on the wrong side of his prime.

On the positive side. Leddy can be flipped at trade deadline for another second pick for supposedly better 2022 draft. Martinez is still a possibility after we loose LD at expansion.

i had the martinez thought immediately. but it's probably his last chance at a long-ish term deal.. and someone will likely give him one since, free agency. also, he's four (or so?) years older than Leddy.. could've been a factor.

Bergevin is gonna sign notable historian Bernier to backup Price.

Yeah, this is where I'm at as well. I don't hate the addition of Leddy, but there were cheaper options going to be available in free agency. If we were adding assets, great, otherwise should have waited until after the expansion draft / free agency. This also puts another wrinkle in the protection list for D. Two of Stecher, Cholowski and Lindstrom will be exposed. Also retaining salary on Panik. I can't help but think Yzerman may have lost this trade. The only way to get back in the win column is if Leddy is flipped for a 2nd (or 1st) round pick at the deadline...

yeah i'm a pass on hyman with so many teams interested. if we were closer to contending, and still lacked forward depth, i might be interested. but i don't think he's long term deal good.. i think he benefits from playing with good linemates in toronto more than his linemates benefit from playing with him. if he gets 6-8 years on his next contract, he'll be a future buyout candidate.

Unspectacular move IMO. Yzerman must figure he can get at least a 52OA back for Leddy at the deadline.

Wha? That doesn't sound like Ken Holland at all. I mean, Hyman and BJ's kinda go together.

I swear, if Yzerman leaves Stecher unprotected it will be the first time I will be disappointed in Steve. Stecher is better than Cholowski and Lindstrom together.

Cholowski´s decision making is awful and he often looks really lost on D, his positioning is poor. Comparable to Bowey in the way that they both have adorable skills and "upside", but with their lapses and defensive flaws. Cholowski doesn´t need to be protected because I don´t think Seattle would be interested in a defensive liability anyway...
