Krayzie_Bone 58 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 Its not about hating nielson or anything it is about the true needs of this team never getting addressed. The sad thing is this is all we will get. The team needs a SOLID D'man that can play Defense not just turn the puck over everytime even though everyone tells us they are a puck moving defenseman. And also we have not had a real sniper that can just score goals since Hossa and it has been an obvious hole. Seems a pretty safe bet the playoff streak is over this year. amato 3,210 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 I'm in the same boat. Seems like he'll be a good fit. And the limited no trade after two years makes that contract movable if he starts to decline or if Larkin and AA surpass the hell out of him at center. And maybe we'll win shootouts now!! Agreed. He can be moved away or even just down the lineup and used on the PK/PP some still if he gets passed up by two other centers. 2 DatsyukianDekes and krsmith17 reacted to this

DatsyukianDekes 2,428 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 This time last year our savior was apparently Green...He didn't stand out much... PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 The more I read about Nielsen, the more i like him.. The term obviously isn't great but that's free agency for ya. Hopefully holland isn't done. Yeah, same. Seems he's a great 2 way guy. Best ever shootout guy. He's been healthy - missed only 5 games in the past 5 years (notice this for those comparing this to the Weiss situation). A lot to like here. and 5.25 is a good cap hit if he's a legit 2C. Also, I like his story as the first ever Danish NHLer. After losing Pav, and the prospect of Stamkos he certainly would pale in comparison, but I'm going to reserve judgement and see what he brings to the table. 3 krsmith17, DatsyukianDekes and amato reacted to this

GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 Its amazing people are banging on Holland for signing him instead of other FA's. Its like you people believe that Holland gets his choice from of all the guys available. It takes two to get a contract done. Kenny can be willing to sign a guy but if he has no interest in coming to Detroit its not going to happen. Detroit is not a prime spot for FA's anymore. We need to realize this. In order to get guys here you are seeing Kenny have to give and extra year or pay more salary. This signing isnt bad at all. 3 DatsyukianDekes, Dabura and krsmith17 reacted to this

GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 Many of us aren't happy with the length of the contract. Myself - I wish Kenny had the cojones to make a trade to improve the team...He's too worried about giving up some prospect, roster player, or draft pick/s. Exactly the last couple years show he needs to throw in extra years to get a guy. Had he pulled out and got nobody people would have roasted him even more. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

You are correct that Holland doesn't have his pick of everyone available, but he could maybe NOT sign more of the same players for too much money with NTC/NMC and actually try to fill positions of need. What a concept! 1 frankgrimes reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) Look it's a bad contract simply because of the length of term and his age. No need to justify with "well it can be traded" because no one is going to want a 35 year old with a $5.25 million cap hit. Nielsen is a good player and a good leader. I'd consider him a bit underrated in the league especially because I can tell most people have no idea who this guy is and jumping to conclusions. I'm not happy with the contract but looking at the positives, he's fills a hole that Datsyuk created. He is officially our top 6 penalty killer that I've been pressing for and bitching about for the last few months. He will reduce Zetterberg's ice time. And will likely push Miller out of the picture. luvmnger 125 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 this league is built now around home grown talent. if you trade it away, it reflects worse that hanging on to underachievers too long. remember letting yarnkrok go? (sp) not much has become of him, yet a lot of people freaked out. so holland is damned for keeping them and damned for selling them. he has 29 other "bosses" trying to be better than he is. his reputation of being the best for so long has him in their crosshairs. meanwhile all of his prodigies have moved on to try and out-do him with his playbook. i used to get all worked up about it, but now ive realized, im just a fan. nothing more , nothing less. no amount of bitching is going to change how the "millionaires" handle the business. its my choice to deal with it, or move on. 1 DatsyukianDekes reacted to this

I think most of us understand this and understand isn't a place players flock to anymore. We can only change that by drafting some studs and start moving up instead of this continuous spiral down that we have been in.

We need help at center and Nielsen gives us an all-purpose veteran 2C who can play brutal minutes against top players and come out looking good. Six years is a long time, though. But if that's what it took to land him, well, then that's what it took to land him. (I believe the Isles actually offered him a slightly better deal.) I think everyone would be cooler with the deal if Helm were out of the picture. Helm's extension complicates things. 2 Frozen-Man and hillbillywingsfan reacted to this
