#2390761 4/27 GDT - Red Wings 3 @ Stars 0

Well played first. Great consistent pressure. Drawing first blood was huge after that effort. If the Stars managed a garbage goal to draw first blood after the Wings outplayed them most of the period, that could have been bad. Stay focused in the locker room, come out hard for he second. They're on their heels. Knock them down, put your skate on their throat and finish it! Let's Go Wings!

If they can maintain this pressure, they're going to end up with quite a few. Let's Go Wings!

Congrats to sputman for finishing grad school.

Congrats to the Wings for a great win.

Congrats to Fil for his 100th goal.

The Big Red Machine is starting to click. Keep this momentum going into the finale. Win it so everything else is irrelevant. (though tbh part of me would love to see Min drop their final 2 games and Col take the 8 spot behind the Wings. I think they'd give the Hawks a decent run if Bobrovsky stays hot.

Abs! Sweet feed by Pavs. Hope Doan sees the highlight.

I remember one series against the Ducks where Cleary was at his peak. I wouldnt have traded him for Stamkos at that time. He seems to be worn out at this point, though. I think we can fill his spot with someone better (Tatar).

As do I. He was a real warrior in that series. If only his body was able to match his heart and desire.

Beautiful takeaway by Hank on Legwand there.

#2388291 Someone needs to change "JIMMY HOWARD!" to "JIMMY...JI

I've said this in a few GDT's already. Van Halen's "Top Jimmy" would be a great arena snippet for the PA after a big save.

Is that a train whistle? I hope somebody in the stands jacks up whoever brought it. This is Hockeytown, not Trashville.

Gotta think positive. The kids step up for us today. DeKeyser scores his first on the PP. Nyquist, Datsyuk, and Kindl chip in also. Let's Go Wings!

Just got back from all-state chorus about an hour ago from Erie. Saw the Flames debacle in a Buffalo Wild Wings where the waitress was very glad to have a non-pens fan to wait on. Got a free sympathy draft after the loss. Better to get that out of their system and buckle down for the last few.

If the Wings pull this out, they're tied for 8th and still have a game in hand. They still control their own destiny. Let's Go Wings! I think Howard is going to have a bit of a mad-on and stand on his head. 5-2 Wings. Goals from Datsyuk, Franzen, Kronwall, DeKeyser, and Filppula. 3 assists for Z, and 2 for Kindl and Pavs.

Carey Price is going to the playoffs.  I'm sure he's doing just fine.

I'm sure he is, but there are those who seem to think he is infinitely superior to Howard. IMHO they are both very good goalies who may very well be proven great by the end of their careers.

Congrats to Danny DeKeyser on his 1st NHL point.

#2382826 Why do you cheer for the Red Wings?

Posted by TheXym on 10 April 2013 - 05:28 PM

Growing up in Eastern PA, my dad tried to raise me a Philly fan. It worked for the Phillies and, for my early years, the Flyers. Don't give a flying **** about basketball, and will only watch football if no hockey is on. Fast forward to 1983. We travelled to Farmington Hills to visit family who was living there at the time over the Christmas break. My 12th birthday was Dec. 20th, and they knew my dad and I loved hockey. The Wings game on 12/23 was my present. Due to the less than stellar record of the team back then, we had nice seats. A rookie named Steve Yzerman scored his first hat trick against the Toronto Make-Beliefs (or Maple Laffs, take your pick). I thought his name was the coolest sounding, and it started with a Yz, which reminded me of Rush (who I was and still am a huge fan of), and seeing the Wings uniforms live made me realize how awesome they are compared to any other jersey. I was hooked.

Dad made lots of "dead things" comments to rib me, and I only got to see games if hey played the Flyers for years. In college I was also able to get the Pittsburgh feeds when they played the Pens and espn2 had several Wings games. I was also very active on the Red Wings listserv out of MSU that Dave Vergolini used to run. When the Blue Band came out for the PSU-UM game quite a few folks on the listserv stopped by the practice field we were using to say hello to the trumpet player in the Yzerman jersey.

When I graduated in 1995 and moved to my current town, I was actually able to pick up the WJR radio feeds depending on the weather. Once Time Warner cable started carrying Center Ice, I was a happy man. A big reason why I'm such a diehard fan of the Wings is that, as others have said, the organization, from the top down, has been, since the Ilitch family bought it, has been a class act. Yzerman and Lidstrom are two of the classiest players and leaders the sport has known, or ever will know.

I've taken more than my share of harassment living in enemy territory over the years, but rock the jerseys proudly. Games 3 and 4 of the 1998 Cup Finals were the best live games I've seen, and seeing Konstantinov on the ice for that cup was a beautiful moment (and I was glad I wore my Fedorov jersey for game 3 so I had the Konstantinov jersey on for it). Now that the Pens and Sens AHL teams are on both sides of me within an hour, I wish they'd play the Griffins so I could see our prospects live.
