I can't speak to the 70s, but as for the 80s, no there wasn't. I'm sorry, but there just wasn't. I've been watching hockey pretty seriously since the early to mid 80s on. Games would get chippy, there would be full line brawls, there were plenty of elbows and fights, but that is not the same thing as what happens now. If a player threw a clean hit, the entire team on the ice did not immediately go jump the guy in the middle of the play. Once in a great while, maybe. But now it's become accepted practice. And if it was a star player that got hit, one of the enforcers on the team would go after him either during that shift or later in the game. Or that team would often start taking runs at the other teams star players. But that's not the same thing. They would intimidate you from hitting guys because of the enforcers, not because the entire team would cheapshot you at once. I understand protecting a star player, that's why Yzerman had Probert and Gallant on his wing, but it's gotten f-ing ridiculous. It's bad for the game, and it should be heavily penalized. I love hockey because it's a fast, athletic, tough sport. But jumping guys after clean hits makes it like hockey players are china dolls. Like a player is such a puss that he can't handle being hit, so his whole team has to protect him. People ***** and moan about the new NHL and how they're trying to take hitting out of the game, but jumping guys after clean hits is doing the exact same thing. Imagine in football after someone got crushed catching a pass, if every player on the offense started trying to fight the defensive back who made the hit. It's idiotic.

The Wings NEED another goalie. Osgood has been living on IR for the last two years and Howie can't/shouldn't play every night. If Howie gets injured in the playoffs, you can't turn to a guy that's keeps getting injured and would you really want the season hanging on Joey MacDonald? Nabby and Howie would be a great tandem and it would keep them fresh into the playoffs.

I feel like theres some plan in place, why would Holland waste his time if he was just going to get picked up?

Forced retirement If he's going to be good for the team then I'm all for it, I just hate that they'd be forcing Osgood out sort of like they did back in 2001.

God damn, you guys all whine like Sidney Crosbys... We saw Pittsburgh in the finals 2 years in a row. They're officially on our s*** list. We're going to discuss, debate, and ***** about their star player. If you don't want to read it, don't click on the thread. People act like every thread around here gets taken up by "Crosby sucks" comments, and that's not true. I think its very relevant to discuss this potential Crosby snubbing the ASG thing, because our guys got dinged for doing just that. As for that being rumors and hearsay, so is about 99% of what we post here. This is coming from a semi credible news source as well, its not like someone just picked up the info on a random blog.

ding, ding... and his agent could still play hardball too and put out a feeler to other teams that A. If anyone claims him, he'll retire and B. If they piss off the agent, he'll make them pay later when it comes to signing another one of his clients... Never underestimate that as well... this rumor is starting to pick up serious steam if it is on the Wings official page...

Howard is like most goalies - as his defense goes, so goes his game. With the players we have had injured and the duration of the outages, I am not really surprised Howard is worn down and off his game. There are really very few goalies playing right now who I consider game-stealers, aside from Thomas, on occasion. We expect way too much of this team. That said, they looked like they were skating in a different dimension last night. They have to be better, or there is no hope for Jimmy. Get out the torches and pitchforks. It's been a while since the fans have run a goalie out of town in Detroit, for playing as well if not better than the majority of NHL goaltenders... it's Jimmy's turn!

Are we reading the same stuff???? Where do you get the impression, in any way, shape or form, that Crosby is upset about not being selected? Looks like your massive hate on is blinding you from the facts. In terms of all the attention his injury is getting, it should....head shots are bad and they'd like to remove them, but it's a tricky subject. The league went nuclear and actually came up with a rule change on the spot after the Cooke hit on Savard.....league hasn't done anything about the Crosby hit, so not sure what you are all worked up about. I can just imagine the whining we'd be subjected to here if it was Crosby that got hit last year and not Savard and the rule change came because of that....it would be whining of epic proportions. But of course it wasn't him, so no big deal right?

I still think that a Ted Lindsay Transformer who shoots Little Caesar's Pizza would be a better representation of the Red Wings.
