Tonight's Stream-Opposition GDT Official Game Preview Last DET-PHO Matchup Next Game vs.

Obviously you guys are excited, and you should be. But speaking as a fan of another team, it's pretty irritating that the NHL keeps putting the same damn teams in the Winter Classic every couple years. I'm sure you'd feel the same way if Detroit hadn't been in it yet and three other teams had been in it twice already in 5 years. Obviously Wings and Leafs fans are happy, but I'm not so sure about most other fans. I hear a lot of grumbling about recycled teams and how people are losing interest because of that (maybe just talk...I'm sure they'd still watch it). Yes, the original six match up is cool, it's an old rivalry between Toronto and Detroit, I get it...but the NHL needs to get some new teams in there. You know Chicago will get it again in a year or two (hopefully against St. Louis, in St. Louis)...and surely if Crosby ever comes back, Pittsburgh will get it again in a 2-3 years. So I fully expect the trend of recycling teams to continue. I just hope the Blues get in before the NHL decides to scrap the Winter Classic due to falling ratings or the novelty wearing off, or whatever.

Looks like it's confirmed, Toronto at Detroit for the 2013 Winter Classic. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2012/01/source_winter_classic_at_michi.html

Because the man was just a beast. The only skater to turn up for all 7 games of the San Jose series, and an absolute joy to watch. 11 games, 15 points, +10. He deserved better, and there's a fair few players on this team owe him an apology. Edit: Oh yeah, and I forgot, played with a wrist so badly injured he couldn't take face-offs

    Fight During Postgame Handshake

Not sure how this makes sense considering this rarely happens and fights don't necessarily prevent people's frustrations from boiling over into other games or later on. I even cited a similar fight in a league which allows fighting. This is just a case of an idiot causing a mess of a situation. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Hurricanes a blowing?

Smaller, less sandpaper to his game, often injured, 3m a year on his contact, for the next 2 years after this one... AND isn't very good defensively... Oh yea, and although it isn't Datsyuk, he's had some pretty good line mates... Also, as is OFTEN overlooked, Bert is liked by teammates and chemistry can NOT be discounted... No thanks.

    trade deadline discussion

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2012/01/red_wings_plan_to_explore_opti.html "There’s the odd trade at the deadline that changes the balance of power, but at the end of the day, when I look at the Vancouver Canucks last year, they made some real nice trades at the deadline that gave them some depth, brought them some grit and were important players. Boston made two or three trades as well. They weren’t the big names, they were guys that were the perfect fit." A complimentary scorer and a gritty player is what they need to add This to me makes it sound like the perfect idea. A big name like Parise but for the price is probably completely ridiculous. I do like how he likes what the Canucks did because I agree with that and what they did. Added a couple third/fourht line tpyes that really solidified the bottom 6, Detroits top 6 has skill already. More than making a big splash they need to trim the fat. Emmerton, Miller, Mursak, etc arent all gonig to play in the playoffs so bundle a couple of them up to upgrade our bottom 6. I like Tuomo Ruutu, he gives them a gritty, abrasive forward that can also be a very good depth scorer. He shouldn't cost a tonne either. I also would like to see Gaustad come center a bottom 6 line. He is great on faceoffs, tough and very good defensively. He and Helm can each see a solid amount of time PKing and both the third and 4th line will have a very reliable center so that all lines can be rolled nicely. Adding Travis Moen would also be nice. Great on the PK, a bull on skates and also adds that grit. Ruutu would be my first target

Why would you expect to see this in the NFL?

    Trade Deadline Approaches

Why do people want Hemsky so bad? He is basically Robert Lang.

He does get some credit towards this status by whooping on the poster child...doesn't he?

    Trade Deadline Approaches

That isn't the new way of saying cyber-sex is it? I hope not! Anyway, all this talk about big names. As much as I'd like to see a number 1 sniper here for the deadline, it wold just rape this team too much before the playoffs. I hope it happens come July 1st though! Anyway, take all the big names out of the mix, I could see three guys coming here on deadline day. Alex Hemsky Travis Moen Evgeni Nabokov. Skip all the other trade talk and sign Parise and Suter July 1st. Perry/Ryan/Iginla/Doan, sure they would be great here, but at what cost? As much as I cannot stand Franzen, he won't be traded. You get Hemsky, Moen, Parise, Suter to replace Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Hudler & Stuart. If Lidstrom retires, then we are in even more hurt, but one step at a time. If you get Suter, it stops the bleeding for a bit. with these four gentlemen, next season's lines look a mile above what we have now, and those aren't too bad as we speak... I'd love to make some up, but who do you think I am, blueadams?

Forgive me if this has not been mentioned, but I think a lot of people are forgetting the best news this could possibly give us. Yah it is great that the Wings are versing the Leafs in front of 115000ish people outdoors next year, but the announcement of this has me thinking that this could be huge motivation for Nick to come back 1 more season. I know he takes a lot into account in the offseason before coming to an ultimate decision, but I think that this game could very well help sway his decision to come back one more time

    Cheap Shootout Techniques

OK so they have 2 exceptions to the rule in the lacross move and the spin-o-rama, I can deal with that. But I don't think that those exceptions translate the wording of "the puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line" to "as long as the puck is under control of the player he can have the puck stop it's momentum". Infact I think what the rulebook describes is the complete opposite of your interpretation. I also think the rulebook description is worded the way it is for this very scenario I'm referring to on the kane goal - so that players can't just park infront of the goalie and deke them out like an *******. I dunno the goal just bugs me, maybe its the fact that it was patrick kane. I just don't see any player of high moral character pulling that kind of lame shootout strategy.

You would think that even if the season ticket holders get first crack, there will still be over 80,000 AT LEAST available to us...I sure would love to go, but will be living on the west side of Michigan by then and it will be even further to drive....but maybe! I wonder if I could wear a Abdelkader MSU jersey there? You would think that even if they do get to buy first, they could only buy the same amount of tickets that they buy now. So, how many tickets are season tickets at each game? 15, 16, 17,000? if even that? I have a feeling that there will be plenty of tickets to be bought, as long as the scalpers and agency's aren't allowed to get their hands on them first!

Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium Finalized

No one is asking the important question, will there be beer?
  20. 1 point
Not true. Back in the 90's, the NHL held a preseason outdoor game in Las Vegas, and the ice was fine. It doesn't need to be below freezing to sustain ice. And it's not actually ice, it has an additive in it that helps it stay frozen at higher temperatures. Besides, the avg. temp for St. Louis on Jan. 1st is in the upper 30's. So even if weather was an issue (which it isn't), chances are it would be ok temp-wise in St. Louis. Now, with that said...I am sure the NHL wants the cold climate and possibility for snow...it just adds to the atmosphere of being a Winter event. So I can see the event not being held in a warm climate for that reason.

Just an idea- what about a WC champion? Play every year till you lose the game. Can be played in neutral arena

I'd rather look at it this way: Like it or not, from your perspective as a Blues fan, The Red Wings are the undisputed class of the NHL in organizational structure, ownership, winning, the generation of TV ratings, merch sales and on and on. They should have hosted the first Winter Classic and it's about time they had one. For once, the game is celebarting the success of two mega-franchises rather then trying to push an agenda of marketing "star" players or pandering to east coast NBC markets. Add to that the fact that Toronto is a very deserving opponent. Viola!!!! Party time.

He doesn't get a "Howie Howie" chant until he beats up an insufferable, arrogant goalie at center ice as his former roommie avenges his bff's broken face. Until then, "Jimmy, Jimmy" or "Jimmy Howard" or "James Russel Howard III" (if we can get a good clapping rhythm going) is certainly merited. His play has been fantabulous.

For a fanbase that screamed "OZZ-IE OZZ-IE" about a billion times, I'm surprised this chant hasn't really surfaced yet. I've heard the "JIMMY HOWARD" chants, but that has too many syllables.

    Fight During Postgame Handshake

NHL players have respect for each other, so this would never happen. These were just a bunch of kids
