Anybody else willing to admit that Dan Cleary has had a hell of a game tonight?

Would love to see Alfie moved up and Ass moved down next game. Bet that would get the second line going. Edit: Better yet, scratch Ass and play Tatar with Andy and Danny. I think the current 4th line can be good given some time together. Edit 2: Only now realizing "scratch Ass". Giggling like a little kid.

kip, you're being a partypooper. All Nyquist has done is destroy the AHL and play a key role in this past postseason run with the Wings (looking like far and away one of the best, most effective forwards on this team in the process). True, he hasn't "produced like Cleary," but he's also had a fraction of the time and opportunity Cleary's had. He's the future, and the future is now. And the future is...sitting in Grand Rapids. And that is ridiculous. No voodoo rhetoric here. No extremist agenda. Just logic, or common sense, or whatever you want to call it. A really good up-and-comer deserves a spot on a roster that's overloaded with scrubs and plugs, guys who overall aren't as good and effective as said youngster. And, I mean, aren't the Wings all about building from within? Hasn't that been Holland's Big Thing for a good long while now? Young talent! Prospects! Youth! Homegrown talent! Drafting! The future! I think it sucks they're playing at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Even strength would be sick too. Though every time Glendenning is mentioned I feel an obligation to take a sip of my scotch.

The Reebok jerseys suck in general. Too many teams have added stupid horizontal stripes to their jerseys, and the Wings had to switch the "c" to the wrong side. Also, the Dallas Stars are unable to go back to their original jerseys, so they keep failing miserably to design new ones.

    Mantha signed to ELC

This contract is subject to the Slide Rule, where it will not officially start until Mantha plays* (see below) for Detroit or Grand Rapids (or any other pro team)... so if he stays in the Q all year, the three years of his deal will be 14/15, 15/16, and 16/17. It will not count against the 50-man limit this year as long as he is not called up. Mantha can stay in the Q with a pro contract. This happens all the time. Frk and Nedomlel were signed last year but stayed in junior. This situation is precisely why players lose NCAA eligibility if they play in the CHL. The NCAA isn't so much concerned with the (small) pay the CHLers receive, but with the fact that amateur players are playing against players already signed to pro contracts. *The Wings could call up Mantha and have him play up to 9 games, then send him back to junior and not have his contract officially start. Recently, the Jets did this with Mark Scheifele. The Flames are contemplating keeping Sean Monahan or returning him to junior. The last Wing I can remember who was in that situation was Martin Lapointe.

Can you imagine a PK pairing of Glendening and Helm? That would be dangerous.

Third PP goal, third assist for Alfie? Like I said earlier in the preseason, this first unit is going to be deadly once it clicks.

I am liking some of Babcock's line changes, but not all of them. To begin, I am LOVING bert on that top line! He looks great out there with the big boys. I am still not liking the 2nd line at all... literally every shift that line was on the ice, we were hemmed in our zone. The reason? IMO it is Franzen and his lazy play. I counted at least 4 times where the puck came to franzen and he literally just stayed put with the puck until the Pilly player came to take it from him... I am tired of Babs playing Franzen over guys that deserve it. I would like to see Alfie on the 2nd line and Franzen on the 3rd line.

What I don't understand is the season he got 60 points he played with good players the majority of the year. During the other seasons his linemates were... Cleary? Franzen? Samuelsson? Hudler? Leino? You guys have always judged Fil on his production when on a line with either s***ty, or lazy players, but never gave him credit when he performed up to expectations playing with players he SHOULD have been paired with. Blame Fil all you want, this team is currently lined with older, lazy, or just plain mediocre players. This offseason arguably made it worse with the resigning of Cleary and putting our 2 huge young prospects either in the minors or on the bench. I'd put money (and have actually, drafted Fil on my fantasy team) that Fil will hit 60+ points this season. He's got the talent, and now the linemates to do it. In Kenny you all trust, how many times does he have to make mistakes for you to realize that he's taking the team in a bad direction?

I finally read the comments from Smith in this article: @AnsarKhanMLive: Brendan Smith on being scratched, Red Wings lines and D pairs for tonight vs. Flyers | http://t.co/ISgcy4Lx9p http://t.co/ea16zcO8tf What does he not get?! Like, has he forgotten how to hockey?

Seriously. He comes out and says he doesn't understand what he could do better? How about providing either one of the following: A. any defense whatsoever, or B. any offense whatsoever. At least Lashoff was fairly solid last season in the games he had, hopefully the break gives Smith something to think about, because he needs to be a lot better.

Haha, that blog post is awesome. It's easy for armchair fans like me to look at scoring numbers and wonder why Brunner wasn't resigned (well, initially, anyway), but if you're a coach like Babcock that understands the game on a higher level and has seen mistakes like this over and over again in games and practices...it's no small wonder skilled guys like Brunner and Tatar end up in the doghouse for reasons that seem unwarranted. I really think the whole NHL is just smarter about this kind of thing now. It's really no different than basketball - it's a 5-on-5 game where each player has both offensive and defensive responsibilities. But in the NBA, casual fans seem to understand that a guy that puts up 20 PPG but plays crap defense is a garbage player. Meanwhile, the Marian Gaborik's and poor man's versions of him with offensive skill seem to skate along, and invariably get big money from dumb teams, even though they cost their team as much as they help. To be fair, defensive in hockey is much more amorphous than the largely man-to-man NBA.

Yes. That is what young players are supposed to do: earn a roster spot/playing time. Which as of today nyquist and Tatar haven't. maybe it is do to blind loyalty or maybe it is because they are not as good as the vets some fans want them to replace. Yes waiting for your chance is hard to do. Then do something about it. As Ric Flair used to say "To be the man, you have to beat the man". There is a lot of trueth in that statement. What made the RW the most successful isn't overriping players in the minors. It was a great draft-1983, several big time trades, multiple UFA signings, and scouting Europe before everyone else did. All the while being backed by the best owner in sports. The overriping of young talent is a by product of having a deep and talented team. Not the cause of having a deep and talented team.
