There are other forms of gambling via casinos everywhere (AGAIN... OUR OWNER HAS A CASINO) hell...you or I could fire up the smartphone and gamble online...who cares? If a player is going to be susceptible to gambling issues, he will be just as susceptible in Detroit as Vegas. Your fixation with Vegas as some hotbed of sin that you must protect these fine young men from is so childish and naive that I find it amusing Re prostitution...same can be said for any town that hosts conventions with any regularity.

Professionals will be professionals, whether they're in Vegas or not. They'll be fine. Conversely, the types of guys tempted by the combination of booze, money, and stardom won't. But that's true everywhere. Darren McCarty didn't need to be in Vegas to throw his career down the toilet. He did it right here in crummy old Detroit. And he had arguably the most player friendly organization in sports behind him. He screwed it up because he's a screw up and that's what screw ups do. I hardly think a determining factor in the league's expansion plans should be how the location will affect the playing careers of the various screw ups around the league.

The dude is an interesting case. He played with Gretzky, Lemieux and Yzerman. I wouldn't call him anything more than a 2nd liner, at best, and he played with 3 of the best centers EVER. Icing on the cake being he also played on one of the best teams ever (not quite 02) but jesus, Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanny, Lidstrom, Murphy, Vladdy, etc.
