Howards cap hit is 5.3 million. Trading Howard for a 6th round pick is essentially giving him away, and if you pick up half of his caphit that means you are still paying 2.65 mil. Bring in another goalie at even 1 mil per year, that becomes 3.65. So all that to save 1.65mil? I would rather keep Howard as a backup.

What would you do if you were GM

Lets not make this thread about Ken Holland or the Illitch Family. The question I ask, is what would you do if you were the GM of the Wings assuming you had full control, and 100% backing by ownership for whatever you wanted to do. From firing or keeping the coach to trading away players to singing UFA's, what specific moves would you do?

That and Datsyuk has a 2 year old daughter and Zetterberg had a 1 year old son. With Datsyuk's magical hands and Zetterbergs will power. Ooof might be a freak of nature player. Hmm... As a GM I would push for them to get married.

Here to second (third?) the DIA. Love that place. All good suggestions in this thread, don't let the Lafayette bullies pressure you . If all else fails, walk around downtown and see what moves you. Stick to the well-lit streets and you'll be fine--good rule of thumb in Detroit is if the street lights become scarce, so should you. I love the DSO, not sure what shows are coming up in the new year but if that's your thing definitely check out a performance.

We would have to give up draft picks, not gain them, or take on bad contracts, to have teams take on that much salary. Not to mention both Ericsson and Kronwall have full no trade clauses. As much as I'd like to see it, they're not going anywhere.

dude you made me rofl. I'll try to disguise me being a tourist, I wont be wearing socks with sandals either, you know, due to the cold weather. On another note, I just found out about the Meridian Winter Blast Jan 20th-22nd at Campus Martius. It seems like a lot of fun and the Red Wings will bring a Top Shot Electronic Hockey Net, Bubble Hockey, Alumni Autographs, photo opportunities with classic cutouts and a weekend-long raffle to win stick, autographed photos, pucks and more. so anyone around or visiting Detroit shouldn't miss this event. http://www.winterblast.com/ There's also TigerFest at Comerica Park on the 21st which is a must go for any Tigers' Fan http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/det/fan_forum/tigerfest.jsp Since Hockeymom suggested going to GR I was planning to go, but this event puts in jeopardy that part of the trip, I wouldn't like to miss out on a chance to get an autograph or meeting any of our alumni, on the other hand, Road Trip to Grand Rapids!! this is quite a pickle, decisions, decisions...

They are a perfect example that if your team has the right players, not necessarily all all-stars, they can succeed. Having a defense that is actually competent and not all plugs helps.

Pretty much this. ...Though, leaning on the kids might actually hurt our lottery chances, compared to our current trajectory.

Discuss the internal prices for every(!) player and if they are met or close to be met that player is gone. Let it be known leaguewide by leeking it to Dreger, MacKenzie and Lebrun who is available and give them a hint at the price-tag and needs of the team. Of course if the name is Larkin, Mantha others have to pay a lot next category is AA, Danny D. Hire Gallant as an assistant and give Blashill till the trade dead line to develop the young guys without looking at the standings too much. Start looking at the top 10 picks and prepare for every possible scenario. Send scouts to Winnipeg (Trouba), Anaheim (Fowler) and work the phones till something gets done. Call up Bertuzzi and other AHL talent and evaluate if they could be part of the rebuild. Trade Vanek, Green as long as their value is high and create as much cap space as possible to take advantage of teams in cap hell come next June. Prepare for a successor and offer to take more of a Burke, Linden or Nichelson role once my contract is up. So the plan would be: 1. evaluation of everyone and everything, including scouts responsible for defenseman. 2. everyone no exception is available 3. get as many prospects, picks as possible 4. play the kids and get the best possible lottery odds

    Conflict in the Crease

They did that specifically for Mrazek because they worked so well together in GR. And it's not like Bedard did spectacular work.

    Conflict in the Crease

Just going to put this out there... Anybody else feel like getting rid of a goalie coach as good as Jim Bedard and promiting an AHL goalie coach ended up screwing Mrazek over this season?

    Ken Holland's Achievements

The argument here is whether or not Holland has accomplished anything as some have said that he deserves zero credit. You seem to be taking the conversation elsewhere. "What has Ken Holland accomplished" and "Should Ken Holland still be our GM" are two different questions. As far as "what have you done for me lately" it is not for you to say. It is all about the perception of the owner and nothing to do with the perception of GMRwings1983 or myself. If Illitch is the person making the decisions, its whatever criteria he chooses. I'm still waiting for you to name me one GM in NHL history who kept their team a contender for more then 13 years, and to name me a GM who has had success without good people/players/coaches around them?

You said: "As soon as Thornton hangs the skates up it's rebuild time Burns, Pavelski and Couture can't carry the load all alone." Based on your posting history, in your mind "rebuild" means trading everyone, anything else you have coined "retooling". Because of this, when you said "its re-build time" my assumption was that you meant trade away all their top players. Name me one GM in NHL history who kept their team a contender for more then 13 years? If any GM stays on for the long haul, they are going to struggle at some point, especially in a post cap world. Same thing happened to Lou in NJ. Also name me a GM who has had success without good people/players/coaches around them? Again, this is not me saying that Holland can do no wrong, he has made a lot of bad moves in the past few years.

Your not wrong, but isn't that the job of a GM to surround themselves with good management, good coaching, good scouting, and good players? That is literally a GM's job. If a GM surrounds themselves with bad management,, hires bad scouts, signs bad players etc. Would you not say the GM is doing a bad job?

Or a smart businessman. Generally top CEOs and GMs tend to surround themselves with the best. This seems exactly like what Toronto is doing atm. Lots of big names there.

    Ken Holland's Achievements

Yzerman obtained Ben Bishop in exchange for Cory Conacher and a 4th round pick. He also traded Kyle Quincey in exchange for a 1st round pick, to some dumb ass GM (I forgot his name). He signed Tyler Johnson, who was a player nobody ever heard of. He drafted Palat in the 7th round. He signed Stralman, who's been a very good player for them. He also obtained Brian Boyle for cheap, who's been a major contributor to their team. There's more to Tampa's success besides Stamkos and Hedman. While Yzerman has been doing these things, Holland has made a fool of himself and now runs one of the costliest rosters in the league, despite severely lacking talent at every position. I know this thread is about Holland's entire history, and not just the last 5 years, but it's easy to see that Holland surrounded himself with smart people who have either retired or went to other organizations.

Toronto is a bad example as its a place where there have always been too many chefs in the kitchen so to speak. Even this current regime, all it takes is the board getting inpatient with the re-build and it would not shock me if things went south quickly. I am not a giant Burke fan or anything, but I dont think Burke was given free reign in TO. As far as the Holland/Ownership thing, I understand how you are not sold on that as if memory serves me right you don't follow baseball. For me, the Tigers/DD/Illitch situation solidified it for me. I know I make it pretty clear that I am not an anti Holland guy. I appreciate what he has done for this franchise, and I do think he has one of the strongest resumes of any GM in history, With that being said, I agree with both you and kickazz in that when his contract is up I would like to see him placed in a different role, and in a perfect world Yzerman brought in as GM. It really bothers me that Yzerman is not apart of this organization anymore. I think Yzerman is more in tune with what is happening in 2016 then Holland. At the same time, what I dont want is another Babs/Blashill situation where people assume that different = better. Trust me people, it can get wayyyyy worse then it is now.

To be fair though, every point you have made against Draper could have been used against Yzerman a few years back. Personally I would be interested in seeing what Ken Holland could do if he was given the green light to no longer worry about making the playoffs for a few years. As far as the long term contracts go, I'm not too worried. A couple dont hurt (just look at TO signing Martin). The one's I dont mind are Abby/Helm, and contracts like Zetterberg and Franzen should be easy to trade once the cash amount per year drops (ie. a Pronger situation for a floor team). Howard I think can be traded, if we begin to really struggle I think Nielsen would drop his no-trade clause and I would put money on it that Kronwall is permanently on LTIR in a year or so. The only one that really may bite us IMO is E. Come on Vegas....you need a big D-man!

HockeyTown Café and Cobo Joe's are my two go-to spots for pre-game beers. Great atmosphere and good food. I highly recommend the Hudson Café for the best breakfast you could possibly imagine... I've never been to a Griffins game, but I will definitely make the trip next time I'm in Michigan.
