2 pointsYeah, could look at Boqvist last year as a comparable situation. Hardly produced at all at the SHL/Allsvensken level, but was a point/game at the JR level. Comes to NA, and scores a point/game in the OHL. Not hard to imagine that Broberg might have more offense than he's shown. I'd be a little more concerned by some saying he occasionally tries to do too much/make plays he doesn't have the skill for, resulting in bad decisions/turnovers. Smith jokes aside though, I'd consider him if we were to trade down to say 9 or 11. Wouldn't be my top choice, but close enough to be OK with it. But at 6 with at least one of Turcotte, Byram, Zegras, or Cozens guaranteed to be there...

$20 mil in cap space? Needs Dmen? Superstar Dman hitting the open market? Gibs me one Karlsson plz -
1 pointRaddysh or Foote is who I'd be targeting. I'd be thrilled with either.

1 pointOnly person I'd acquire this offseason is Ryan Callahan. Take him for a year, get the pick/prospect, and leave the UFAs for next year when we sign Trouba. Callahan can have Vanek's spot, Witkowski, and Frk will be gone and there's not harm in keeping Ehn down/waiving De La Rose if we really really want some combination of Zadina, Rasmussen, or Svech up this year. Lottery pick here we come baby!

1 pointNobody advocated taking Tyler Bertuzzi, or Smith, or McIsaac in the Top Ten of the draft. And I'd argue that if you take a draft pick (whether Boqvist or Broberg) that high and they end up being similarly productive to players taken in the 2nd round then you've probably misused that pick. Especially if there were warning signs (e.g. poor history of offensive production) prior to drafting him. Again, I'm not arguing that Broberg won't be good. I'm arguing against taking him too high in the draft. Something you've said you don't prefer, but you'd "be fine with". I very much wouldn't be fine with it. I'm just giving you my reasons why. Broberg seems like a guy who's benefiting a lot from being a defenseman in a weak defensive class. Buyer beware. Maybe it's a philosophical difference. I don't think you should draft anyone in the top ten you don't assess to have "star" level upside. And having a history of mediocre production at lower levels would certainly make me doubt whether a guy like Broberg has that kind of upside. The odds of finding a legit difference maker outside the Top Ten are so diminished that I think you've wasted your best possible chance of getting one if you play it safe with high picks. Doesn't mean you can't find them, obviously, just means you're not playing the odds like you should IMO.

Sure, if you're just looking at one season, where Nyquist had a career best and Eberle had a career worst... Nyquist also put up 11 points in 20 playoff games, and Eberle put up 9 points in 8 playoff games... I love Gus, but I'd take Eberle over him at the same term and cap hit all day, every day. -

Trouba, DeKeyser, Hronek, Cholowski, Lindstrom, McIsaac Our blueline is starting to fill up as well. We had Sulak bolt this summer due to the logjam. We need to ditch Kronwall, Daley, Green, Ericsson, Helm, Abdelkader, and Nielsen BEFORE we think about adding. The kids are having a hard enough time displacing our signed vets. No reason to make it harder unless the acquisition is extremely favorable (Trouba). -

That's why we draft Nolan Foote in the 2nd, then we can acquire Cal Foote in a trade and have both of them! Adam Foote would s*** himself! He'd have to become a huge Wings fan! -
1 pointYES PLEASE. (especially to the bolded players) I would happily take on either player's cap hit if we got one of these prospects. Also, it's not like they're bad players.. their contracts are just bad. We have the time and cap space to eat those for a couple years here if it helps our future out... especially on defense. I'd be 100% for it.

1. A lot of people... re: Karlsson. 2. A lot of people... re: Karlsson. 3. It's not about helping Tampa / Toronto resolve their cap issues... It's about helping the Red Wings. I obviously wouldn't just take Callahan / Marleau for the sake of taking on a bad contract. It would come at a big cost. For me, the trade would have to include Raddysh or Foote / Kapanen or Liljegren. 4. Which is where 1. and 2. are coming from. A LOT of Wings fans want to go all in on Karlsson. In my opinion, that would be extremely dumb. I think Yzerman could make a tweak. I just don't think it's necessary. He's already made one shrewd UFA signing in Kaski, but I think that was already in the works before he was "officially" hired. Like I mentioned though, I think a shrewd trade would be the better option. In saying that, I wouldn't be too upset about a Connolly or Ferland signing, as long as we don't get into any bidding wars. As long as it's a short-term, low cap signing, Id be fine with it. -

Watch Rasmussen explode this year. I know everyone has tempered expectations because of the pedestrian first year, but I'm tellin ya this kid is gonna explode at some point. I think it will be this coming season. Holmstrom + he's gonna be. -

Until Yzerman actually says "I'm not signing any UFAs", I'm going to assume he's signing at least one. -

2019 Draft
BringBack19 reacted to kipwinger for a post in a topic
You're doing the same thing people used to do with Brendan Smith. You can't be an "offensive" defenseman if you don't contribute much offensively. Or, if one insists on saying he's "offensive" stylistically then he's not a very good offensive defenseman. I bring up Lindstrom's stats, and their similarities, because nobody would call Lindstrom an "offensive" defenseman despite the fact that he produces just as much offense as Broberg (whom everyone calls offensive). So why is one "offensive" and the other isn't? I agree with your characterization of Broberg's skills. By all accounts he's very fast, big, and all that. But NONE of that has helped him score very much. And if he's as bad defensively as you suggest, and he doesn't have a history of producing much offense then why the hell would anybody want him this high in the draft? Because despite his track record we're just SURE he's going to break out when he gets to the SEL, or the AHL, or the NHL? Seems like a bad bet to me. Especially for a rebuilding team with a high pick in a deep draft. -
