    2019 Draft

Basically, what KR said I think it's probably also some small nod towards Veleno, Rasmussen, and Athanasiou. Yzerman might feel more than comfortable with those 3 as future C's going forward. I certainty felt more comfortable at C than D before the draft. There are so few players coming out of the DEL that there isn't even a reliable translation factor. Factor for the AHL as of 2017: 0.47 For Swiss, Finland, and National College Hockey: 0.43 For College Hockey East: 0.38 For Big-10: 0.33 My guess is the DEL probably falls somewhere between 0.33 and 0.43 I think one of the reasons Seider was ranked 15 or below is because he was in the DEL. I think a player like himself would've been ranked around top10 had he played in Sweden or Finland or something like this. That's just speculation though.

    2019 Draft

Drafting Seider at 6 overall and taking 3 Dmen in the first two rounds, I think is a nod, however small, to Yzerman's confidence in our depth in our forward pool as well. Up front for a young forward core he has: Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha Athanasiou With Zadina, Rasmussen, Veleno, Berggren, Smith, Svechnikov, and Hirose on the way Out back for a young defense he has: Hronek - Bowey With Cholowski, McIsaac, and Lindstrom on the way That forward depth looks pretty nice going forward. Even if Svechnikov, Smith, Berggren, and one of Veleno/Rasmussen/Zadina were to bust you'd probably be alright in future years. On D however, if either of Cholowski or McIsaac bust the future looks pretty poopy. Adding Seider, Tuomisto, and Johansson to that list of potentials is a big step in the right direction.

He wouldn't. But just saying that it's not 100% decided that he's going back to the DEL next season. Either way would be good, I'd just rather him start in the AHL for callup potential.

I was too busy scoffing at that post and judging anyone who believed it to go and actually look the kid up.

    2019 Draft

Thrilled about this pick. Big, smart, mobile, RH Dman. Praised for his skating, particularly his speed going backwards. His intelligence and ability to read to the play. His gap control and board work. And expected to be a big minute eater. Offense is sort of an unknown, as he was deployed heavily in the D-zone and sheltered away from the O-zone this year. We know he has a good first pass and is smart and mobile. I've seen German fans praise his shot, but I dunno fersure yet. Two things I don't really see people talking about: His personality and adaptability. Everyone seems to sing praises about both. Adaptability wise he's known to adjust to new situations and challenges quickly according to his coaches. Basically, when thrown into sink or swim situations, he always finds a way to swim. The kid essentially went from German Juniors to being a top 4 Dman in their top means league at the age of 17. He will be expected to be a top 2 Dman for them next year at 18. Personality-wise he's known for his veteran level poise, leadership qualities, and strong-character. There's a quote from former NHLer Korbinian Holzer where he says playing next to Seider feels like playing next to a seasoned NHL vet. He's incredibly calm, doesn't panic, and reads and acts on plays expertly. In regards to leadership qualities... If Larkin wasn't on the roster, I feel like I'd be talking about this guy being a potential captain one day. Not sure if anyone watched the 9 minutes interview with him after the draft, but I was really impressed. If you look past how many times he humbly/modestly mentions how nervous he was, he strikes me as an extremely confident and well-spoken person. Especially for a foreign speaker. Kid had lockerroom leader written all over him if you ask me. I think if you draw parallels between Larkin sorta being the newest version of Yzerman... then I think we just drafted our Lidstrom.

    2019 Draft

From what I've read, Seider was an Yzerman pick, and it's because he genuinely thinks the kid has very high potential. Objectively speaking, he took a 3rd-tier rated prospect with a 2nd-tier pick. Even if he's wrong it's not any big deal. At least a couple of the 2nd-tier guys are going to come up short as well. Tuomisto was a Wright pick, and was a bigger reach. Worse given that he plays the same spot as Seider, and that there were still several picks with perceived 1st-round talent. We also already had Hronek, Bowey, Kaski, Lindstrom, plus Regula, Barton, and maybe Saarijarvi on the right side. I'd probably be OK with it if we'd taken Zegras or Cozens with our first. No real reaches in the rest of the draft. I don't think there's much difference in who a top team would scout for 2nd/3rd round picks, as opposed to a bottom team. Probably a combination of info from both teams went into those picks. I would have been happier with Lavoie, Leason, and Legare in the 2nd, but no one knows if they'll actually be better.

    2019 Draft

...On the other hand, I'm surprised that people are so suprised that an Yzerman draft haul would look like this. Big defensemen who don't flash spectacular skill but are mostly smart and mobile and well-rounded and effective? Check out Tampa's D: Cernak: 6'4 Coburn: 6'5 Foote: 6'4 Girardi: 6'1 Hedman: 6'6 McDonagh: 6'1 Rutta: 6'3 Sergachev: 6'3 Stralman 5'11 Slater Koekkoek was traded to Chicago in January, but he's an Yzerman pick. (2012, 10th overall. *cringe*) He's 6'2. The aforementioned Erik Cernak was drafted 43rd overall by LA in the 2015 draft. A couple of impressions of Cernak from 2015: https://dobberprospects.com/player/erik-cernak/ Sound familiar? Now check out the latest report on that page: 5 goals and 16 points in 58 regular season games as a 21-year-old rookie defenseman. 3 assists in 4 playoff games as a 21-year-old rookie defenseman. And check out that characterization at the top of the page (not sure when it was written): 6'4...mobile...RH...physical maturity has never been an issue...smart player...not super flashy...projects as a solid two-way player... Small hard-working forwards of the "Literally who?" variety? I'm sure I don't even need to name names, but I will: Gourde (a centerman): 5'9 Johnson (a centerman): 5'8 Kucherov: 5'11 (178) Point (a centerman): 5'10 Ethan Phillips, for example, has "Yzerman guy" written all over him... https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/305096/ethan-phillips So. Yzerman's history is the main reason why I'm inclined to believe him when he says he went BPA in this draft. I think he simply has strong personal preferences, a short list of specific things he always looks for...and this year those preferences led him to pick 2-4 players that most people would not have taken at those spots in the draft. People wanna say Yzerman is the best GM in the league and then when he does Yzerman things it's all "WHAT IS HE DOING?!"

The BCHL is also a MUCH lesser league than the DEL. Hockey is growing in all European countries and I expect the sport to continue to grow in Germany. I know Draisaitl played junior in Canada, but he still played a large portion of his hockey in Germany, and he was drafted 3rd overall. I'm not too worried about picking a player in more obscure leagues, but after they're drafted, I would prefer them to come over to North America to continue their development.

The AHL is also a stronger league, albeit not by a huge margin, which would be better for his development. Not to mention playing on North American ice, and being right in the backyard of the big club, for better resources, training, eating, etc... Playing another year in the DEL wouldn't be the worst thing, but I personally hope he makes the jump to the AHL... I'd also be able to watch a lot more Grand Rapids games than Adler Mannheim, so there's also that... Either way, really looking forward to see what the kid is all about in development camp this week!

I'm just glad we are addressing the Defense. Its been horrid for years and looks like Stevie is putting his money where our mouth has been the last decade. Wouldn't surprise me to see a decent signing to help anchor the learning curve going forward.

From this article https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2019/06/23/detroit-red-wings-nhl-draft-grades/1535168001/ a quote from Andersson. “Yzerman has been pretty strict,” Andersson said after the two-day draft concluded on Saturday. “He wants competitive players, too. There are no dogs. Like sometimes you draft a guy with high talent, Dick Axelsson is one example, but they don’t compete. But these guys all work for it.” I thought the bolded was an interesting thought ...now if you can get talent that's competitive you have what our GM was as player so here's hoping #6 pick is both.

This was a little prescient. First time I really heard of Seider, though admittedly many here follow the prospects much more closely than I do.

From his own mouth: Detroit Free Press: "How would you describe yourself as a player" Seider: "Smart two-way defenseman who loves to join the rush, creating space for his teammates, but is also not afraid to play the body, ja"

no, he left in October. The "Story " is that Holland started talking to him in March about becoming GM. Which I feel is hogwash. I believe this ball was rolling way before then.

Stay away from free agency, unless it's a low cap hit / term signing we can flip for assets later. Kadri may be traded, but it's not exactly a salary dump, so it would take a lot more than that package to get him here. He's a good player on a good contract that I'm sure a lot of teams would be interested in. In saying that, at 28 years old, I wouldn't have a whole lot of interest as a rebuilding team.

I think there's a reason he slipped out of the first round, but I also think there's a chance he could be a steal at 38. He reminds me a lot of Mantha in his draft year. All the raw tools, speed, shot, hockey IQ, but compete and competitiveness may be lacking at times.

I believe when he got drafted, Seider said something along the lines of he'd go where ever the wings management decided he should. I hope he starts in Grand Rapids

Both parties have to agree to have a deal... I'm sure they tried several trade back scenarios likely even with the 6th pick, but it takes 2 to tango. On some level you must realize this.

Andersson said about Grewe, a coach told him that every time they called the kid up practices got way more intense physically and he realized that every time this kid steps on the ice the intensity of the entire team goes up.

Which may very well have been bc Holland knew Yzerman was gonna take Seider. Lets not forget these two men were basically scouting together the entire season.

Yeah. Good-not-great veterans. Nothing especially ambitious. Basically, business as usual for the Wings. That being said, I doubt he's especially interested in Duchene. Age-wise Duchene just doesn't fit with where we're at. Contract-wise, he's going to get paid like a mofo.
