Datsyukian-Deke 722 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 @RedWingsFeed: Spezza gives list of 10 teams he wont accept a trade: The Senators captain will... http://t.co/2NHuEa5re8 via @NHLonNBCSports #RedWings I'm going to assume we are not in that list which means we have a 1 in 20 chance of trading for Spezza.....so your telling me there's a chance! Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 A few more thoughts: I guess Spezza for Kesler makes sense, in theory. But I'm not sure the Canucks would be thrilled with that trade, unless Kesler is just balls-to-the-walls get-me-the-hell-outta-here, in which case, sure, Spezza sounds awesome. Spezza's big, but, yes - he's soft as a baby's bottom. And kinda lazy. He's an elite 1C in this league, no question about it - but as other are saying, he doesn't scream "THE ANSWER." ...However, we don't need an ANSWER. At least, not in our forward corps. At the very least, Spezza would be a solid complimentary player who would, in theory, hold down the 2C spot (the less time Z has to spend playing pivot, the better), and take over for Datsyuk when he leaves. Personally, I want us to go young with the forwards. But we're definitely lacking a high-end centerman in the pipeline. The hope is that Sheahan can become a 2C. Interestingly, his stats for this season - basic and advanced - suggest that's very realistic.
Guest DeGraa55 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 You can never have too many two way players. Spezza would make our second line better offensively, but lets not forget there were only 4 forwards in the league with worse +/- numbers. He's not the cure to any of the Wings problems. Yes in a way you can. I'm not saying go capitals be all offense by any means. BUT. Having a couple guys who focus in and excel in offense would be good. If be ok if some didn't play defense but was consistently scoring 35-40+ goals every year. We NEED one guy like that. Also IF and for the sake of the wings I HOPE SO but IF actually lives up to his contract and is a 2c spezza can then be a winger for us. Of all the guys rumored to be available he clearly makes the most sense. Hell I'd be ok with Alfie back then. Alfie Weiss and spezza as number two line is good. Meaning nyquist or Franzen is on number 1 and other on third. It's a move that not only helps us and gives us insurance now but can help us down the road if he gets an extension. I'm going to assume we are not in that list which means we have a 1 in 20 chance of trading for Spezza.....so your telling me there's a chance! And I assume 5-10 teams don't or can't get him on his list so here's to hoping a 1-10 chance!!!!

Yeah but of that 5-10 teams, Detroit joins that list the minute Bryan Murray asks for a roster player... damnit Kenny Murray traded Heatley before for Cheechoo and Michalek, so we could do something like Weiss and Franzen, players past their prime who (could) find their groove. Franzen is familiar with Paul MacLean as well. Doesn't seem like a great deal but Murray isn't a great GM, he just might bite on this. Ottawa needs roster players not more prospects

I'd rather the guy who scores 20 but is a plus player, especially when you're talking about a center. I'm not opposed to going after Spezza but he'll have to drastically change his game to fit into Babcock's system.. When the wings were winning championships the grind line enforcers scored 20 a year LOL. We have guys who do that now and we barely make playoffs. Spezza IMO will help with that not only him but the two guys on his line as well.
PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 (edited) Ah, now I won't be able to hear Murray attempt to say Spezza with his lisp again. Ottawa just seems to me one of the worst run organizations. Just think of all the good players they've let go: Ben Bishop Brian Elliot Ray Emery (Okay, he did fight with other players on his own team) Hossa Chara Fischer Havlet Vermette I'm sure there's many more - that's just off the top of my head. Even if they didn't keep all those players, they should have a better team with those assets passing through. Heatley demanded a trade (Yes, he's has an attitude problem) Alfie wanted out Now Spezza demanded out Hopefully Karlsson demands a trade at some point. You could take all the -'s of the Grind Lines entire careers with the Wings and it would be about equal to Spezza's -'s from just last year. To put it as clearly as possible because you don't seem to be getting it...when Spezza is on the ice, the puck goes in his net more than he and his line-mates can put it in the oppositions. Until he can change that he'll never be able to play under Babcock.

When you're on a bad team your stats will look worse simple as that. 1 F.Michael reacted to this
kipwinger 8,524 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 I don't want Spezza on this team, but this plus minus talk is silly. You can't use his -26 this year against him and then fail to give him credit for his career +53. He's got a better career plus minus than Mike Richards, who was a finalist for the Selke Trophy. Either it's a terrible stat and shouldn't be used at all, or it's a good enough stat which has to be used to validate a player just as much as it's used to denigrate them. Personally, I don't think Spezza's a great defensive player. BUT, he's better than his -26 indicated this season, and he's probably worse than his career high +26 indicates as well. 2 F.Michael and krsmith17 reacted to this

It's a limited stat. That's how I think of it. It can tell you something, but, generally, don't take it at face value. Case in point: Jason Spezza this season. The Sens sucked this season. (Apologies to the resident Sens fan.) They absolutely leaked goals. Neither of their goalies could stop a beach ball. And yet, Spezza was, I think (haven't formally checked), about a point-per-game player. So, on the second line of a defensively responsible team like the Wings? I tend to think he'd be a difference-maker, without having the baggage of a captaincy and being The Guy. If I'm Spezza, that's what I want. What happened to the Ducks? I thought they were in on him? That'd be an interesting match. Francine straight up for Spezza I would do in an instant. Toss in Kindl if needed. Take away the 15 goals Franzen's going to score against the Sens every season and they become a playoff team. 2 WingsAlways and krsmith17 reacted to this
Richdg 267 Report post Posted June 13, 2014 Getting a guy like Spezza would be a very good move depending on cost and if he agrees to an extension in advance. He would be our best offensive forward the day he arrives. His career points per game average is better than Datsyuk and Z. Not much, but it is better. He has good size: 6-3/220 and is a right handed shot. No he is not a banger. he does use his size to protect the puck. he is great in the puck possession game. 4 different years he has scored 30+ goals. Not he turns 31 tomorrow and has had back issues, which is a concern. But he would make us better. All that being said, will we get him? No. Even though he is a Holland type of a player. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

Spezza would be the perfect fit for the Blues there is no way he waives for Toronto. Canadian fans are often asking whzly free agents don't want to play there well noe they know why.
