The real playoff streak was being a Cup contender for about 17 years or so. Many of those seasons, they were the Cup favorite. No other team besides Montreal from the 50's to the 70's had a streak like that.

However, the last 6 or 7 years are all about keeping a stupid streak alive just to give us one week of pathetic playoff hockey to watch. That streak is not impressive. That's what the Blues streak was about all those years. Make it to the playoffs and lose one week later. Who cares?

This.

If Holland wasn't so in love with Blashill we'd see a new coach for next season, but nothing will change.

How can Holland have the nerve to fire a coach when he's been here so long and has sucked as GM for many years? That would take some nerve. The ownership needs to step in and fire them both. The fact that Yzerman and Nill are having so much success just makes it sting more.

I hope Blash comes out next year like a 2007 babcock after a terrible series. We scored 8 goals in 5 games, let's not even pretend this team had a real chance for a run. Players not being held accountable and the veterans showing they can't win us more then a game should be quite evident now for even a stubborn Kenny. I always thought it was a tough position Blash came into. Babs a future hall of fame leaves after 10 years, the veterans run the team and a young coach has to try an establish a voice within a tightly knitted group. He didn't act like a coach this series, hopefully he learns from it and shows that it's his house, and you all better fall in line, because the Blash I read about before this season is not the one that lost this series. Almost every redwing that wasn't a rookie underperformed this year. Maybe it was a learning curve but all eyes on everyone now and that's what this team needs, you can't not show up and think it's ok, I believe many redwings fall into that category. Time to toughen up Blash, control this team properly, because it won't get easier.

Hold the phone. None of them are having success till they win a cup. Otherwise they're all just a bunch of St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. Season and playoff wonders who can't win out.

I know I don't mean this, and I'm going to regret it the moment I hit "post", but sometimes I wish we had Toronto media in the room to ask point blank, even purposefully incendiary questions of the coach like "Coach, AA seemed to have a lot of energy out there, create scoring chances, and carry play, what was behind your decision to play Tatar/Nyquist/Richard more while he rode the bench?"

Maybe. We'll see what Dallas does, but Tampa has had several deep playoff runs since Yzerman took over. We've won one playoff series since he left from what I remember. If not for Bryzgalov's terrible goaltending, we'd have one series win since 2009.

Also, both Dallas and Tampa have bright futures and young stars. Our future is not as bright. Holland has not set this team up for future success.

Just got home from a business trip and just saw the final score. Heartbreaking way to lose, but almost appropriate for this year.

The Wings have been under-performing all year long... It should never have come down to stuff like needing other teams to lose to get in the playoffs (they've blown so many games they should've won this year, it isn't even funny) or losing a key game because of one goalie mistake... If they'd scored some freaking goals tonight, one mistake wouldn't have ended their season. But that's been their sad story all year.... Heck they're won ONE game in the last seven (arguably) "must win/critical" games to close this year out (since Philly)....

All I know is that there has to be a big shakeup in the off-season ... This team needs a retread.... All I can say is ...... Go Tigers!

That series was a synopsis of our whole season. Couldn't score. Special teams sucked. Clearly were out coached and Ericsson was on the ice for a big goal against. To the people who think a move at the deadline would've helped should be happy now that we saved the picks and prospects because without some proactive thinking this team was going nowhere. Tough last game for Pav, hope he stays but I think thats it. I would sell the house, farm, cars and even the kids to get Stamkos. Once in a 10 year type span to get a player like him. Show him everything he wants to see and at the end of the day if he wants to go somewhere else so be it...but please put in some effort. This organization is stale and needs a hockey trade or two. There are many servicable guys on this team still but roles need to be redefined.

To be honest, I don't blame Datsyuk if he leaves. It's clear that this team isn't going to contend for a while. Some of his and Zetterberg's prime years were wasted with mediocre lineups. This is exactly what happens when you keep applying lame band-aids to underlying problems. 3 years in a row we've gotten bounced in the first round.

How the f*** doesn't Athanasiou get playing time in the 3rd? Blashill proved himself to be a ******* joke at times this year.

Richards played like garbage the entire series. He better not be back next year. Ericsson looked like hell. Tatar was quiet the whole series.

What a lame way to end Datsyuk's career here.

f*** Ken Holland.

0:00 for AA in the 3rd? Really? Did I read that correct? f*** Jeff Blashill.

And Andersson less than two minutes total for the game. But he was an important grinder for the team's PK - with his 0:00 on special teams. Definitely couldn't have brought up Mantha in his stead.

So are you ignoring the fact that Tatar had the most points for Detroit in the series, or are you just mad and don't care?

I get it, it sucks that they lost. But can we at least be reasonable and informed with our criticism?

I think Holland was going for it as long as Datsyuk and Zetterberg were around. Now with Datsyuk retiring, the playoff streak will end, and we'll get a few top 10 draft picks. We've got some good young players to move the franchise forward with, and it's time to add some top level talent to it in the draft.

I didn't expect to go to far this year in the playoffs anyway, so I'm not upset. Plus I'm getting to old to lose sleep over sports . It's on to my next team, Let's Go Tigers!

Bill Simmons talks about this all the time with the NBA, we are in no mans land. Good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to contend.

Yeah, that was embarrassing. They dress Andersson for his supposed "Bob Gainey" like defensive play, and then refuse to play him. However, they don't play AA or Mantha either. Bizarre coaching.

Wings scouting needs to find some guys from Western Canada are aren't very fast, but they can shoot the puck, and punch some faces...Make this team enjoyable to watch.

Agreed. Without Datsyuk, this team will be one of the most boring ones to watch next year. It's clear that the formula hasn't worked for the past several years. There are an abundance of these types of players available via free agency or trade every summer.

They should just re-sign Richards and bring Cleary back and get it over with.

Garbage coaching from Blashill - on an unbelievable level.

He had the most points on a team that scored 8 goals in 5 games, and he was irrelevant in the deciding game. He didn't blow anyone away.

"2nd year in a row we will say we were close, but they find a way to win, we don't. That's something we have to address." -Henrik Zetterberg

Interesting quote from Z post game, he doesn't really have the stats the past two years to be saying this to teammates... management maybe?

Right, but he also played the sixth fewest minutes of anyone on the team. I'm not saying you're wrong - it would be great if he had scored more - but directing your criticism at a secondary role player who was the second-leading goal scorer for our team in the regular season and our best player in the playoffs seems counterproductive.

He played the sixth fewest minutes on the team. Our problems are with the people assigned to actually show up and blow people away.

Definitely seems like a jab in that general direction. Or towards the team mentality as a whole - growing too complacent to just make the post-season and consider the rest as extra.

I don't disagree. It's clear that Blashill mismanaged the team's young talent. Datsyuk and Zetterberg can't carry the team anymore, and guys like AA should have been getting more time.

Right now I'd have to say there won't be a 26th year in a row. We need to go with one goalie and cut bait with the other. It's gonna hurt the bottom line to let Jimmy go but he's the obvious choice. I'd say right now to tread water we need at LEAST two top four defensemen. A top line center is imperative. If it's still just Hank, Glendening. AA, and 6-8 minutes of Sheahan we're doomed offensively. We need a top six scoring winger to balance Larkin as well. I'd be willing to trade either or Nyquist or Tatar to get help.

The contending teams are not playing as many kids as we are. They're great and all and very economic but at some point with a solid core of them you MUST mature the roster with leaders and guys who have won the wars and produce at playoff time and win their faceoffs and beat guys to loose pucks and yes, score powerplay goals.

I'm ready for change and I'm ready for Mr. Holland to now live up to the company standard, of those much is given, much is expected.
