Study done on fighting in hockey

http://powerscouthockey.com/blog/measuring-impact-nhl-fights-momentum-and-scoring-well-potential-coachs-strategy This recently published study was done to see if fighting really does impact the momentum of the game, the guy who conducted it has a few University degrees and is an economics major so hes good with data. They used the rate of shots on goal after a fight as a way to measure momentum, they decided this was the best way to quantify what you visually see on the ice and call momentum. Its not perfect but when I tihnk of a team with a tonne of momentum, shots on goal and maybe puck possession to an extenet is what I would call it. I think they used a good metric here. They found that in over 75% of games after a fight, at least one team recieved a boost in their momentum, this is short term momentum taken over a 5 minute period. Basically, a boost that gets a teams head out of its ass if theyre playing poorly. Appleby was on hockey central at noon and said that a poor period for a team would usually be around 4 shots on goal while the average is about 10. The teams that were having poor periods and not getting many shots on goal received the biggest boost by far. Basically, its saying that if a team is playing well a fight may give a small boost, no boost or the other team may get the boost BUT when a team is playing like s***, a fight will usually give a pretty big boost to the team. Earlier this year when Abdelkader fought Lappierre in Vancouver is a prime example of this, the wings got a big boost and played much better after it woke them up. Games like last night where the team was flat against the Isles is a perfect example of why adding a scrappy player like a Tim Jackman or Prust would be perfect for this team to wake the skill up and keep going. I know the whole momentum aspect of fighting is not accepted around here by a lot of people, but now that it was quantified and studied has anyone changed their stance on replacing redundancy in the bottom 6 for a guy who could provide this type of spark on a consistent basis?

I predict they will play better tonight, vs. Yoties.

No. Teams with an enforcer in the line-up have better games for five minutes 75% of the time following a fight if they were doing poorly before the fights. Or, for the namby-pamby panty-waists out there: If the Wings ever had a day when they weren't playing well (also called "playing the Islanders"), a fight might help them for 1/12 of the game 3/4 of the time we actually do it, which translates into an average of 2.5 minutes per season as the team stands at this point.

I apparently haven't been paying attention, but what happened to Crosby again? Is he back to crying about his concussions?

If we had a player like Mike Rupp we could've iced him during the timeout and he could've punched somebody for twenty seconds. esteef

After the debacle last night I expect them to come out and play hard tomorrow.

Pavel Datsyuk is lazy and he sucks.

He's lazy, he sucks, and he's worse than Franzen because he doesn't even float.

Carman's back? Now all we gotta do is find Titanium2, Micah, Eva, Lidstromboli, EZBAKE, and convince the mods to let Mindfly back on and the whole crew will be here!

I think it adequately shows what those of us who don't care about fighting have been saying all along: In short, fighting doesn't amount to much. Furthermore, since a fight, by definition, involves both teams, the momentum factors also affect both teams. Which would logically suggest that if 30 fights equals one win, that same 30 fights also equals one loss. I suppose, if your team only fights when they're playing poorly, it might be more of a benefit. So I guess the best strategy is to employ a couple of those spot-picking ******* that all the fight fans seem to hate so much.

So teams with an enforcer in the line-up never have bad games?

Obviously, the Wings don't listen to Babcock and never really have. It definitely showed last night. Certainly not the best motivator and never has been. He always tells the media how good the other team played after a loss to take some pressure off (him). And whatever made him think that Conklin was gonna have two consecutive good games in goal? I think Babcock is way, way overrated as a coach and it's been showing for the past couple of seasons. Of course, he has Holland to protect 'em but Holland isn't anyone to protect anybody. Curious to see what he's gonna do at the trade deadline. I mean really........what has he done lately to improve the team as much as the other GM's in the league have done for their teams? Not much when you think about it. Ian White......okay but what was that Commodore signing all about? And remember..........he let Hossa "walk" and that was a huge mistake. In retrospect..........the Wings aren't gonna win anything this season and probably not in the foreseeable future. Apparently, a change has to be made both behind the bench and "upstairs" as well. The Wings have a winning record attributed to just a handful of talented players and that'll get them just so far in the playoffs.

Can we swap coaches with St. Louis? I think Babcock's message is getting old.

    Speculation on Red Wings

I'd love it if the site wasn't so full of condescending assholes who feel as if they are superior to everyone else with their opinions. If you don't agree fine, but feel free to leave the arrogant attitude out of your response.

I don't know what's funnier... The fact that they just dropped the puck, or the fact the Blues somehow didn't get it out of the zone... Instead the D forces it up the boards where the players were just huddled... I wish they would have turned it over and got scored against....

I still want to punch him for that somewhat ill advised shot that led to a Game 3? win for SJ in 2010.

I'll just summarize the responses for you here: Crymson: "NO! The Wings are perfect and Holland had nice hair! They do not need a tough guy." Konnan: "You're all just xenophobic euro-haters. They score plenty of points with 'soft-euros'." Various: "Fighting in hockey is useless. You should just watch UFC, you don't even like hockey." Holland: "The right deal just wasn't available, but we're confident that some players will take that next step..."

The Wings haven't won a Cup without an enforcer. We haven't had playoff sucess the last 2 seasons and haven't made many changes, I haven't seen the video yet but it doesn't seem to me as though Don is saying anything but true things. If he is sarcastically mocking Kenny then he can go on, but the toughness issue cannot be argued against.

Dom update: 2009-2010: Hašek signed a one-year contract with HC Moeller Pardubice, the club where he started his long career at age 15, as the youngest professional goaltender. He won Czech League championships with Pardubice in 1987 and 1989 (moved to the US, NHL in 1990). In the 2009-10, season he again led his team to victory in the title match for the Czech league. Dom posted three shutouts in the playoffs, one in the finals. Pardubice lost only one game in the playoffs before posting twelve consecutive wins to take the title. They begged him to return, but he said with typical Dominik-logic, that he'd been there, done that. 2010-2011: Hasek signed a one-year contract with HC Spartak Moscow (KHL). They've had a bit of a rough year so far, firing the coach and scrambling the lines. Dom got a shut out opening night. I hope to live long enough to see him inducted into the HHOF. Not sure he will ever actually retire for three years, though.
