That is the market. 4-4.5 million per season is a fair deal. he does more than just score. he currently is our only F that even thinks about physical play. he is strong in his own end as well. datsyuk and Z love to play with the guy, why should any of us fans question this at all? the bigger question in my mind is Helm. he currently makes more than Abby and also is in his walk year. Does he also get resigned and at what rate? if he worth 4 million +/- per year? I like helm but he is at his best as a 3rd line checking C. IMHO I would use him in a trade to upgrade the D.

Lou Lamoriello new GM of the Leafs

And the Maple Leafs hire Jacques Lemaire too. Toronto Maple Leafs ‏@MapleLeafs 10m10 minutes ago The #Leafs have hired Jacques Lemaire as Special Assignment Coach. #TMLtalk Hmmm...Shanahan, Lamoreillo, Babcock, Lemaire. Sounds like a good management group. I just wonder if they've got enough ego ya know? Like, do they have someone willing to take charge and be the boss, is my concern. Lol. I can't wait for this to fail. I mean, what could go wrong with a plan to remake the 1995 New Jersey Devils, only without all the great players and in an era where that style of play is largely unsuccessful?

If Abby has another season like he did, I'd have no problem with 4 mill.. He's a hard worker and he's earned it. Whatever he ends up getting, I bet he'd get more on the open market.. not by a ton but he seems like he'd be the type of guy to take less and stay here rather than leave.

Actually he was arrested in Las Vegas but I agree with your overall argument

While I agree, Abby would be getting money for his prime years. When Gus is at that level, he'll likely be around 6-7 mil. It sounds like a lot right now, but its still taking awhile to get used to cap inflation. Just under 4M wouldnt be bad at all.

Well you see I did say, I predict....not that it will happen. Don't wanna open up another one of those son's, brother's, uncle, daddy, sister's dog catcher debates! But since we're in the subject......just kidding!

This reminds me when the Wings poached Coffey out of LA for fallen center-man Carson. He was pure offense, D was a bit of a question. Not to worry, Coffey scored so much here that he won a Norris during his time. Green has been close to winning before, but I predict that he WILL win a Norris within his three year contract. I also predict he will never leave Detroit, he will retire a Red Wing. ...besides, most players who sign here or are traded here do. That is the difference between this franchise and most others, we treat our players so well that they usually never leave. Welcome to Detroit, again, Mike Green. It was inevitable that you come here, and now you will see what its like to play for the best sports franchise in the World!

    Free agents this off season

When it comes to any discussion of Franson, I feel like it's important to remember that most analysis of him is in comparison to other defensemen in his salary range. He's definitely not a bad defender. He's probably better than 60% of all other defensemen out there. He's clearly a top four defender, and among those he's shown that he can score better than most. But he's also worse defensively, and his skating isn't great. But again, that's in comparison to other top four guys looking for 5+ million. I think sometimes we focus so much on these guys' positive and negative attributes that we end up getting tunnel vision and fail to think about them in context. Cody Franson is a pretty good defenseman. He's not Brendan Smith or Jacub Kindl. He's like the inverse of Kyle Quincey. A top four guy who's a little worse than average defensively, and a little better than average offensively. His problem is that he thinks 30+ points per season puts him into Matt Niskanen salary range. Which it doesn't, given his limitations.
