"To be honest with you Ive waited for this moment ever since I was drafted," Ott said. "Ive always wanted to be a Detroit Red Wing. Its my childhood team that I always grew up admiring with the teams and runs that they had with Steve Yzerman and the rest leading the way. It has always been a dream to wear the winged wheel and now that this has all come together this is the most exciting contract I have ever signed." http://redwings.nhl.com/club/m_news.htm?id=888384

Lol he actually does replace Datsyuk though. 1. Defensive center 2. Will put up 50 points just like Datsyuk would have if he played another year (guaranteed he wouldn't have played all 82 games). 3. Really good at shootouts. The other positive in this is he can still kill penalties while Datsyuk no longer did.

Goodbye, Datsyukian deke. Hello, Danish Backhand of Judgment.

Some nights Tats and Gus aren't ready now. Good grief. Those two are small, soft complimentary players. With any luck we'll be able to move one of them in a package for a good defenseman before Oct 13.

I would add that a positive is that we have plenty of extra pieces to use for a trade But otherwise sounds about good.

If signing Stamkos would've been an A+, these 3 signed today is a solid B+. Helm is C-....

That is the exact kind of stuff I want to read. It is sorely lacking on this team these days.

I wouldn't say Kronwall is dead weight, he just needs to be counted on less at this point. He still has a lot to offer in a lesser role. As for Howard and Ericsson, I agree. Sadly we're stuck with Howard unless we get lucky.

Holland hasn't done the best job. Miller contract was useless and Helm is overpaid for what he can do (I don't care if he would have gotten more money as a free agent). But I also can't agree with people blaming Holland for not landing some of the players like Lucic, Okposo or Eriksson. It's upto the players whether they want to be here or not. Detroit is not UFA destination it used to be and we have to realize that. Some people revert into their former high school logic and start blaming Holland for literally every single thing. No one can take you seriously if you can't differentiate between an instance when Holland really IS at fault and when he ISN'T. So far I'm frowning at Holland for the Helm/Miller deals but giving a slow golf clap for the Vanek deal and a nod for Nielsen with a questioning look about the length of term. We can only truly know if these things pan out once the season is underway.

You have created your own reality around your opinion. Here's an article about the Stars interest in Helm, that forecasts a bidding war on him. http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dallas-stars/stars/2016/06/30/stars-interested-lucic-helm-free-agency-will-price-right Somewhere else in this thread there's a tweet from Dredger or Mackenzie on the 5 or 6 teams that were vying for him. Glad Helm's back. Terrm is good. Caphit is a bit high. Hope this relegates Miller to the extra forward position.

Look it's a bad contract simply because of the length of term and his age. No need to justify with "well it can be traded" because no one is going to want a 35 year old with a $5.25 million cap hit. Nielsen is a good player and a good leader. I'd consider him a bit underrated in the league especially because I can tell most people have no idea who this guy is and jumping to conclusions. I'm not happy with the contract but looking at the positives, he's fills a hole that Datsyuk created. He is officially our top 6 penalty killer that I've been pressing for and bitching about for the last few months. He will reduce Zetterberg's ice time. And will likely push Miller out of the picture.

I guess Sheahan can move down to let Darren "Stonewall Hands" Helm can center the 3rd. Seriously, either way, I hope Ott earns that spot and stays.

We can only hope for that expansion draft to save us..

In fact people would have been furious if he didn't sign neilson. He got neilson at a shorter term and dollar amount than his team (nyi) that he was with for his full 10 year career offered and people are still mad. Had he signed lucic, backes, okposo, or any of the big names from today to any of the contracts they signed for people would still be mad. Kenny can never do anything right around here. I feel like he actually did a good job today. Ya the neilson contract length is long, but it's only really going to hurt us the last 2 years most likely. The vanek signing was very good too imo. Helm contract length and dollar was high, but shouldn't really hinder us going forward too much.

I find it funny most people on this forum didn't want radulov at all originally. But when kh failed to get him he's villanized. Had he signed him for $6 million he would be villanized. Lose lose for kh no matter what lol.

Hate Shaw. Helm is the least of our problems. He works his butt off and is fast. I'm ok with this. The real deadweight on this team = Erickson, Kronwall, Howard Move some of these pieces if possible

Lmao. Tootoo is not anywhere close to being better than ott. Even at this point in their respective careers, or at literally any point in their careers.

For negotiating purposes, you make it look like you're legitimately considering other teams. Then the team you want to go to pays you more thinking they might not get you. Thought amato explained it well. Or maybe you're just ignore this possibility so you can blame this on Holland.

Vanek is also really good around the net, especially with cleaning up rebounds. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah, same. Seems he's a great 2 way guy. Best ever shootout guy. He's been healthy - missed only 5 games in the past 5 years (notice this for those comparing this to the Weiss situation). A lot to like here. and 5.25 is a good cap hit if he's a legit 2C. Also, I like his story as the first ever Danish NHLer. After losing Pav, and the prospect of Stamkos he certainly would pale in comparison, but I'm going to reserve judgement and see what he brings to the table.

The more I read about Nielsen, the more i like him.. The term obviously isn't great but that's free agency for ya. Hopefully holland isn't done.
