    Targets for the Wings

So because we don't have a great stay at home defenseman, that makes our top offensive defenseman expendable? That makes zero sense. Why not just go out and get that stay at home defenseman to pair with him? Green has been great for us, and well worth his contract, and as long as he keeps up that same level of play this season, he should fetch us a very nice return at the deadline. So no, he should not be viewed in the same light as Kronwall and Ericsson, not even close.

How does Green keep getting lumped in with the dead weight on defense. The guy is still productive and currently this teams only capable defenseman. He's not holding any younger plays back. I haven't seen anyone on the Wings or the Griffins that can move the puck and contribute offensively like Green. I'm hoping some of the kids like Hronek, Saarijarvi, and Sambrook can become solid two way defenseman but they are realistically a couple years away and Green will be gone by then.

People aren't saying avoid at all costs, they're saying he's not worth what he's probably going to get, even if it's not the mega deal; some people are predicting. I'd take Shattenkirk for 3 or 4 years at $4.5 mil or so provided they can clear some dead wood first.

I was one of the people that really wanted to go after Montour. He wouldn't have been cheap, even back 12-18 months ago, but I do think whatever the asking price was probably would have been worth it for us (assuming it wasn't anything too crazy). I agree though, we should be looking at somewhat unknowns with potential. Aneheim aren't moving Theodore or Montour unless it's massive overpayment. Who's Carlsson? I'm assuming you meant Larsson? He could be a decent option. Guys that I'd inquire about would be Sanheim from the Flyers, Fabbro from the Preds, or my number one choice, Bean from the Canes. None of which would come cheap, but for three teams that are overflowing with defensemen, and could possibly use a little more offensive punch, I think a deal could be worked out...

Exactly, but it's not his fault that the team has not provided him with the proper partner. Green on a 2nd pairing with a great defensive d-man who can pitch in offense would be a perfect use of his skill set. He is a valuable asset, we just need to utilize him properly. I can't say the same for Kronwall (due to injuries) or E.

I don't get why some folk are so down on players from other leagues ever making it into the show. Every one has to start somewhere and now and then players appear in some other league that go on to make it in the show. I don't need to remind fans that Mr Rafalski plyed his trade in the Swedish and Finnish leagues for 4 years after leaving the NCAA as no team was interested before he got a chance to show what he has. I agree not all will make it but writing players off before they're even seen is a bit premature.

The good news is that Ott is officially off the market, so a Wings target he is not.

At this point I think a lot of pepole would rather not commit big term and dollars to an older UFA... see what our kids can do, evaluate, but not jump on the first UFA we can get like Neilson last season. http://www.tsn.ca/off-season-game-plan-detroit-red-wings-1.754664

This team has so many D that contribute nothing to the offense. Green gets the puck and moves it up ice out of our zone. Sure he's not the greatest defensively but who on this team is? Yea he makes mistakes but that's what happens when you have the puck all the time.

E and Kronwall you are right, but lets not lump Green into that group as he's at a completely different level in 2017 then those two.

    Top Buyout Candidates 2017

I'm not an expert, but common sense thinking would be that it would not impact any buyout since the buyout is buying out the contract, so the NMC/NTC is gone as the contract no longer exists.

Good to know. Great way for the league to influence playoff games according to their agenda.

From what I understand about Bedard, he is a great mentor and has a knack for spotting talent. His understanding of the pressures and mindset of netminders is very good, which is what made him an effective goalie coach. He kept Osgood chill and level headed throughout his career. However his methods and systems, at this point in time, are considered "oldschool". He's not on the cutting edge of modern goaltending techniques anymore. This is most likely why the change was made.

    Griffins Calder Cup Playoffs Thread

With such a large frame, not many pucks should get past him, but he hasn't looked good in these playoffs. He's made a few big saves, but has let in quite a few softies. I still think he can be a decent backup at the NHL level, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with him as our starter (if Mrazek or Howard went down) for any length of time (yet). He still needs some seasoning in GR in my opinion.

Fischer was scouting him for a year apparently. May as well see what he's got. Wings' D can use all the help it can get. Look everywhere possible I say. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Big win for the Griffins! 4-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 is Friday at 7 in GR.

There are some rules which should never have been put in the books. That is one of them. Same goes for the rule about "resisting referees". Apparently, when a ref grabs you, you can't struggle to get away or swing at another player. How many times do we see players struggling to get free from the refs during a scrum? If the rules were followed to the letter, then they would be suspending players left and right for that. There are just some rules that are put in the NHL books that have good intentions but are just crappy rules. Personally, I am glad that they are not enforcing rules like that. This is hockey, and our players are tough, not pansies.

We need to lose (to vegas) and trade away about $12M total for this to be anywhere near a start to a successful off season. Any three of Green, Abby, Ericsson, Howard, Helm or Nyquist would fit that bill wonderfully. Its a fact, we have to shed that salary or there's no way we can get pointed in the right direction.

Both those teams severely underachieved in the regular season. A wild card spot is the best the Wings can realistically expect. Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

I wish their fans would stop chanting stupid things like they did 10 years ago. They should have grown out of the stereotype of the unknowledgeable, hick fanbase by now.

Preds lead 2-0 after 20 mins. I'm torn. On the one hand, f*** the Ducks. On the other hand, the Ducks might be the tougher opponent for the Pens -- and the most important thing in all this is that the Pens do not repeat. Ah screw it. Go Preds!

I really hope they don't. That would just open old wounds that haven't and may never fully heal from 2009. That loss was on the Wings, they had it in the bag and collapsed, but that doesn't help things. Having them be the last team to repeat... WHY THEM?? The repeat in '97-'98 is one of the major things we have left from the dynasty days and Stevie era.
