I completely agree about why he'd want to keep the job. He wants to "leave no doubt," as Babcock would say. Ego. Personal redemption arch. Attaining "Legend" status. What I'm starting to question, though, is how much that actually means to him. Maybe he's privately in "I'm too old for this s***" mode. -
2 pointsAgreed, those signs are there. I think Nyquist is underrated on here, but he has definitely regressed. If he re-emerges though, I could see him being re-signed, then Tatar being traded. Or Nyquist being traded at the deadline, then re-signed, then Tatar is traded. I admit though, I could be dead wrong as well lol. Nyquist is a tough one to read, I remember back in 2013 (the Anaheim series specifically) he came across to me like he had elite potential, he was just one of those players that looked dangerous when he touched the puck. Then in 2014 he decided to play like a Hart contender from January-April, then in 2015 he came back down to earth and now looks like a decent 45-60 point second liner. He's only 28, so who knows what direction he goes in. He definitely doesn't look like the Nyquist of 2013/14 anymore though. I think this is why he has so many fans that dislike them. People thought he was going to take this team over and save them from the imminent D&Z regressions/retirements, and he didnt. Same hate will come to Larkin/Mantha if they fizzle out. Fingers crossed.

1 pointMany of us have been iffy to hating Blashill since he was hired. Even so the players seemed to like playing for him. But the last 2 games, giving up 16 goals to a bad Habs team that struggles to score AND looking lifeless while doing so, makes one ask. Has Blashill finally lost the team? No he doesn't assemble the roster. Yes he makes bonehead moves. But these last 2 games were 100% on the players. They simply didn't care. So your thoughts? I think he has. I think he forgot to be his own man/coach and the players now seem him as a pretender. Just my 2 cents.

[TRADE] Scott Wilson to the Buffalo Sabres

UPDATE: The #RedWings have traded F Scott Wilson to the Buffalo Sabres for a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. https://www.nhl.com/redwings/news/detroit-acquires-pick-from-buffalo-for-scott-wilson/c-293661266 -
1 pointSomething this board has struggled mightily with over the last 5-6 years is recognizing that the NHL and every league beneath it tend to be wildly different for everyone sans the elite among the elite. That’s one or two guys every generation, certainly not Jeff “he’s won everywhere” Blashill. Most pros win everywhere before they make it to the pros; it’s almost a prerequisite. For the rest, you really never know how things are going to go. The really crazy part to me was how confident the Wings were in Blashill. Did they even interview alternatives? I don’t remember. I only remember everyone and their mother essentially thinking he was our savior and Babcock was overrated and hurting things here. I was never sold on any of these ideas. Bummer it’s working out like this, but fans and maybe even management need to learn that they have to work with other proven professionals in the NHL sometimes. You can’t assume everything coming out of your system is going to work out for the best. We’ve made dramatically less trades than any other team in the league in recent years. I think the second lowest team still has twice as many trades as we do. This system is not working.

I have never seen a loss like this since Stevie was a year or so into the league. WOW!! Once a team quits on their coach he needs to go. It isn't fair but as they say you can't fire the team. Blashill is in over his head. He blames the wrong guys. And him and his coaching staff seem to have no answers but lots and lots of excuses and cute quotes. That is for losers. ******* losers. About a 100 games in and he is not the answer to move this team forward. The Calder Cup win is a distant memory. Holland? FFS Chris Illitch might even bring him back. Yes. Imagine that. He is guaranteed to write his own ticket. He is doing our organization a huge disservice. Move upstairs already or go home to Western Canada with your riches. We have had the enjoyment of 3 HOF captains in a row. But when I turn on the postgame and see my current captain about to cry on a national TV broadcast all I can ask is WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO STEP IN AND DO SOMETHING? I can only imagine what Hank and Pavs talk about these days. The fans love you Hank!! Nyquist, Tatar, Abdelkader make me sick. I expected a hell of a lot more than what they have delivered and it seems it is not going to happen in Detroit for them. (6 more years of Abby all because he's from Michigan? SMFH) Mailing it in over and over and over. Petr or Howie need to go. Green is waiting on a phone call from a playoff team and best believe it is coming. How the hell did we turn into this? A team with NO direction. NO plan. No preparation. And zero accountability. Call the front office and tell them how you feel. I don't know what else to say. Disgusting. -

Obviously Howard because Mrazek is absolute trash. Can’t believe I thought he would be good. Guess I’ll eat crow for a few months. They should have kept Jim Bedard - Mrazek actually did well with him. Can’t believe we let a good goalie coach go for nothing. Thanks Blashill... Use your head Righty. If we don’t resign MRazek we get $4 million off and one year after that we relieve another $5 million when Jimmy is gone. If we rid Jimmy now and resign Mrazek we only lose the $5 million from Jimmy and probably have to resign Mrazek to some overpaid deal. I say we let go of Mrazek and ride out Jimmy for another year and get cheaper backup and hope one of our farm goalies makes a leap into the NHL roster. If not re-sign Jimmy for a 2 year deal for cheap (3-4 million) -
1 pointWe need more thug life in Detroit. Bring in Kane.

1 pointIt's not about finding a new coach that will take us to the playoffs right away, right now for myself. I never expected them to make the playoffs this season as is, if they do, chances are they are bounce in 5 games or less. That's no good for anyone. My issue with Bashill is how terrible his line management and match ups are. His terrible decision making on who, what and when should be on the ice. The fact that almost every single player has regress in some way. If they haven't regress, they've stayed the same. That he has shown, he is unable to coach up lesser talent into anything. Last, I also believe the team has tune Bashill out. No doubt the vets are hearing echos of Babs with every word Bashill says. I think he's never really on a grip on the locker room. At this point, I just want something completely different. Not more of the same with that's a lesser product and effect.

Sampling error??? He was the starter last year and played 50 games and his GAA was 3.04. 3.04!! What is this? 1980 hockey? That’s a terrible GAA number. -
1 pointMrazek has also been on the wrong side of back to back games and has had an extremely tight leash. He also hasn't been getting any starts so there is sampling error and the inability for him to have the chance to become consistent.
-
1 pointStill not even close stats wise. Why do you have such dismay for Howard, and such fandom for Mrazek? The part that I bolded implies that you wanted Howard to have a slide. I don't get why a person who is a fan of the Wings is rooting for a player to do bad, and not in a "I want them to tank so we land a pick way" but in a "I want Howard to play bad, so I can tell people I am right" way.

1 pointThe reason why I dont see this, is because right now Holland's legacy is at an all time low. I have a book from maybe 8? years ago that ranks the best players, coaches, GM's of all time and Ken Holland was ranked the #2 best GM ever. To have this type of respect, then have it all go away, I think that alone is motivation to continue what you are doing and attempt to bring the Wings back. Think about it. Option A) Holland steps down, fans say the 3 cups were luck, and he was exposed. Just look at the posts of guys like @Jonas Mahonas @LeftWinger etc. They hate him now. Option B) He stays, turns it around and wins a 4th cup, goes back to being one of the best ever. IF he did this, no fan would dispute his legacy. If I am Holland, I am picking option B. Not saying he WILL turn it around, I'm saying in his mind, this is what I think he is thinking. Or at least, if I were Holland, what I would be thinking. If I were Holland, I would want nothing more then to prove people wrong. But to play devils advocate to my own point, if he steps down and someone else take over and wins, he will get some credit (ie. Chicago/Dale Tallon) if he keeps going and gets fired, his "end" becomes just sad.

1 pointKronwall could retire, or he could go into LTIRement. I think the latter is more likely. Or maybe he plays out his contract. There's nothing to say Nyquist or Howard will be extended. They certainly wouldn't be getting raises. Nyquist could be replaced internally, i.e. cheaply. Sign one or two of the thousand good-not-great veteran goalies that are always available for cheap.

I’d bring in Evander Kane just to expand the diversity of the team. -
1 pointIf you want Kane, the move would be to trade Nyquist for picks, then go after him in UFA. I agree with @Dabura though, if there are 3 elite 20 something D all hitting UFA next year, we need to be ready to get into a bidding war. All those D > Kane.
-
1 pointI think he's savvy enough to let Nyquist's contract expire next season (possibly flipping him at the trade deadline) and not tie himself to a $45M Evander Kane deal and go all-in for Karlsson/Doughty/Ekman-Larsson. In a vacuum, replacing Nyquist with Kane probably makes us better. But I don't think it makes us better by all that much -- and we're not operating in a vacuum anyway. Money, term, age, cap flexibility, positions of need/priority -- these are all important considerations. If you're the Wings, throwing money at Kane this summer would not be wise, IMO.
-
1 pointIf we make the playoffs, we're likely playing the Leafs in the first round. The Leafs are not an elite team. They have a thin defense; their leaders are young and green; they're built around one player; Marner and Nylander have struggled this season (relative to the expectations placed on them); know one knows if Frederik Andersen can get it done in the playoffs; know one knows how this young Leafs team would handle the pressure of being the favorite in a playoff series (the Toronto market is ruthless and ridiculous); and, as we all know, Babcock teams are not unbeatable.
