Yes, when you retain salary you also keep that part of the cap hit. Also, we have like $20M in cap space, more coming off soon, and a bunch of ELCs coming soon. Buying anyone out or even trading anyone is stupid.

Yeah, I think he would be a reach at 6. Good looking prospect, but a tier below the guys in our range in my opinion. If we traded back, maaaybe... but even then, there would likely be better players available, assuming we wouldn't trade out of the top 10...

Well, then trade Holland the #6 so he can "reach" for Broberg and get back the #9 and a young asset or 2nd round pick.

He saw that Helm, Abdelkader, and Glendenning were still on the roster, and decided to stay in Russia rather than have those linemates.

Yep Florida seems to be a hot potential landing spot for a bunch of guys. Apparently rumblings in the Edmonton media that Holland was super high on Broberg and that Yzerman may still take him. Thoughts? Huge reach?

Buying out Abdelkader would be retarded.

But that's not what you said, and it's also assuming a premise that's very much in debate. You said overripening never produced anything but bottom six forwards and bottom pair defensemen. I named you multiple top six forwards and top four defensemen who were "over ripened". Now it's reasonable to ask whether they would have turned out to be top guys anyway, but I don't think the evidence suggests that was obvious prior to their "over ripening". Aside from Mantha, none of the guys I mentioned were 1st round picks. None of Tatar, Hudler, AA or Bertuzzi were dominating the AHL. Datsyuk was an overager. Zetterberg wasn't even the top prospect we were scouting when we first found him. Even Mantha struggled as an AHLer (leading to the "very very disappointed" comment by Devellano). His rookie AHL season was worse than Svechnikov's. So it's not clear cut that ANY of them were "ready" for the NHL within a year of being drafted, much less ready to be top six forwards or top four defensemen.

To me, a nightmare scenario would be if Hughes, Kakko, Turcotte, Byram, and Zegras were the first five players off the board. I guess Dach would be a decent consolation prize there, but I wouldn't be thrilled. I've really soured on Cozens over the course of the year. Admittedly because scouting reports have consistently criticized his skill level (while lauding his physical tools), and not because I've watched him a lot or anything. I actually liked our position a lot more when Podkolzin was still the presumptive 3rd pick. At this point my list is as follows: T1: Zegras T1: Byram 2: Turcotte 3: Dach T4: Krebs T4: Newhook 5: Cozens We'll definitely land one of then, but I'd HIGHLY prefer it be one of the top 3. So here's hoping one of Chicago, Los Angeles, or Colorado likes Dach, Cozens, or Podkolzin more than I do.

I was thinking this yesterday too after looking at some of the combine results. I'm not sure how much his testing will affect his draft position, but last I checked he was supposed to go somewhere in the middle of the second round. Do you take him early in the second? disclaimer: I know zero things about the guy outside of his apparent physical prowess. Totally with you. IMO he's got the highest chance of becoming an elite talent of all the guys that'll likely be available to us, and like you said I believe he fills a need for us. I'm really back and forth on Podkolzin, I honestly have no idea what to think of him at this point.

Getting back to the Verbeek thing. Great news. Say what you will about Yzerman vs Holland, but Yzerman + Verbeek >> Holland + Martin Hopefully he doesn't get snatched up by another team too soon. Speaking of which, feels great to poach from another team for a change. NHL's been picking at Red Wing carcass for a decade.
