2020 Draft Thread

If we were in a different stage of our rebuild, or if we already had different pieces in place, then I'd be advocating for different guys. But one commonality between fans, hockey pundits, and the team management alike seems to be that we need more game breaking talent. People keep saying that we have really good, but not spectacular, pieces in guys like Veleno, Ras, Berggren, Mastrosimone, McIsaac, etc. But according to most we don't have gamebreakers. Poirier has that kind of upside. High risk, high reward. I wouldn't use a top 20 pick on him. But if he falls to the 2nd round I think we'd be crazy not to give him a long look. I love two-way workhorses. Guys like Larkin, Bert, Veleno, Ras, Seider, Hronek, are the guys you lean on heavily when games matter. But you've also got to have a few of those guys that just generate offense on a different level. Mantha is that. So is Zadina. Hopefully whomever we take a 4th will be that too. But I'd like to see one or two guys like that on the back end. -
1 pointI doubt it. He took a pretty team friendly deal to stay. I think he only goes if he wants to.

1 pointI'm never a fan of offersheets. In order to actually get the player you have to massively overpay. Anything less than that and you're just negotiating a contract for the other team. Any reasonable offer for Sergachev is matched by Tampa, and they'd just clear the cap space by trading a down lineup guy. Any offer they won't match would have to be so high that the player wouldn't be worth it.

I guess I wasn't being clear. I know why Markstrom is currently a topic of discussion. I guess I'm saying that I don't understand why everyone hasn't already concluded that he doesn't make any sense for the Red Wings because of his age, expected salary demands, and the marginal (maybe) improvement he'd be over Bernier. -
1 pointPeople are sleeping on Jeremie Poirier. He's probably the defenseman most like a Makar or Hughes in the draft. Those guys are putting up gaudy numbers so everyone conveniently forgets they're abysmal defensively. That's basically what Poirier projects as. A modern day Mike Green. I'd love that guy at 32.

In fairness, if some poindexter on Twitter said "hearing Detroit wants to make a big pitch for Griess" we'd probably be talking about him. We're debating Markstrom because, rumors. I thought that was obvious. -
1 pointWhy are we debating Markstrom vs. Howard? We already have a better goalie than Jimmy Howard. Jonathan Bernier. Is Markstrom better than Bernier? Maybe, maybe not. But why dump big(ish) money into a guy that's not noticeably better than your current starter? Why not just sign a Halak or a Griess to backup Bernier for shorter term and less money?

Where the f*** did Carter Hutton come from? The goaltender being discussed was Jacob Markstrom... A Festiva is a s*** box. A Yugo is a s*** box. Howard is a s*** box. Markstrom is not a s*** box. Therefore, bad analogy. And yes, Markstrom is worth MUCH more than twice the price over twice the term as Howard. -

Trade Bait Board Last 4 are Bozak, Honrqvist, Matheson, and Hamilton. Couldn't get them in the screen shot. -
1 pointI don't think Zadina will hit 30 goals before Mantha, but I do think Zadina will hit 30 goals at a younger age than Mantha. Mantha will be 26 the first time he hits 30 goals (2020-21). Zadina will be 22 the first time he hits 30 goals (2021-22). He will come close this coming season, and a couple jackasses will still call him a bust...

Right? Mind blowing how folks refuse to give a 20 year old kid a chance. Guys like Makar or Q.Huges who come in and dominate right away are the exception, not the rule. -

Well, good job Yzerman didn't do this with Kucherov after his first season. 9G/9A in 53 games as a 20 year old. (Zadina had 8G/7A in 28 games by the way) -

1 pointPronman just released his 2014 NHL re-draft. https://theathletic.com/1584416/2020/02/06/pronman-re-drafting-the-nhls-class-of-2014/?amp#click=https://t.co/dCFPe2uHWf Larkin came in at 4th overall, behind Draisaitl, Patrnak, and Point... Dylan Larkin, C Then: Larkin was a tough player to evaluate in his draft season. He was the USNTDP’s No. 2 center. Its top center was Jack Eichel, who had first-round picks Sonny Milano and Alex Tuch on his wings. Larkin opened the U18 worlds playing between Anders Bjork and Ryan Hitchcock. I knew plenty of scouts who loved Larkin because of his great speed, compete level and how he drove offense without elite linemates. I had questions on the skill and offensive upside. Now: Larkin has emerged as a true No. 1 center, logging huge minutes for the Red Wings the past few years. The physical tools he always had are still apparent, but his skill and particularly his offensive IQ were better than I thought, and it resulted in a top offensive performer even though he’s having a bit of a down season in 2019-20. Fabbri came in at 27th overall.
