Salary Cap rewards for cup finalists
GoWings1905 and one other reacted to rick zombo for a post in a topic
Also, funny this reward scheme didn't come up last summer when Detroit lost Hossa, Hudler, Samuelson. and Kopecky and Pittsburgh lost Scuderi and Gill. The Hawks sold the farm to win a cup this year and now they have to clean up their own mess. No team should be rewarded for signing Campbell to a 7.5M contract. The fact that this is even being talking about is borderline infuriating. -

Did the Hawks get a little lucky?

Every team that wins the Cup gets a little lucky. In fact, most get a lot lucky. Luck played a part in every Wings Cup. So... yes. -

How much better would we be looking with Leino and Kopecky
Original-Six reacted to GMRwings1983 for a post in a topic
That lineup looks softer than butter. Leino's surge is partly from playing with a tougher lineup in Philly, and Kopecky could never play without his b/f Hossa. -
1 pointWhy stop there? Why not add Quincy to your roster and we can fully wonder why some players didn't fit the Wings organization.

Did the Hawks get a little lucky?
Hockeymom1960 reacted to Jericho613 for a post in a topic
The Hawks had a real good team this year, It might have been different if Nashville hadn't blown game five. All teams get lucky in the playoffs. But looking back at the season and the playoffs, I think this was the Hawks season to win it all. -

Salary Cap rewards for cup finalists
Original-Six reacted to sherwood40 for a post in a topic
Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. So because chicago won the cup they get an extra 2 million to pay out for possible more talented people in the free market, giving them a lot better chance at winning the cup again the next year. It also means teams like florida, toronto, islanders who are getting good draft picks won't be able to make the finals due to a lower salary. Time for this topic gets thrown in the trash. -
1 pointThat's funny... because I've never seen a poster more preoccupied with what other people are posting about. Still trying to determine if this makes you a hypocrite... I'm thinking yes.

Tollefsen headed to Sweden
Wings_Toledo reacted to LeftWinger for a post in a topic
Was he ever seriously going to make it to Detroit anyhow? There's the trade, Tollefsen plus our first rounder to Boston for the #15 pick... No? Shoot I dont know! I really dont care about him, he'd spend two more years in GRR with the ocasional call up (maybe) then move on somewhere else, may as well go now. No sweat off our backs. In hindsight, Darren Helm, Kris Versteeg, Mike Brown, Lee Stepniak, Brad Richardson, James Wisniewski, Kyle Wellwood, Travis Moen & John Michael Lyles were all 5th round picks respectively, would any of those type guys be fair trade for Leino if Holland scores in the 5th round? Draft is a gamble, but those are all good examples of 5th round picks that worked out, plus there are plenty of even later round picks in the last 10 years that would be worth trading Leino for... -

A) Nylander was injured for half a season and was sent down when he got healthy under the guise of a training stint. B) Nylander was exposed to re-entry waivers at least once and entry waivers twice (if I remember correctly) C) Nylander was actively shopped to European teams once it was clear no one in the NHL would take his contract. D) Nylander struggled to produce in the NHL when given a shot Huet was strong at the end of the year this year and Campbell was an Olympian. -

I said could... I didn't say count on it... but if you really want to brake it down to brass tacks, Leino was a FA signing, so even with Tolle gone, we basically got a 5th round pick for free... -

Would you want Byfuglien?
Cheveldae32 reacted to Sprsquirt7 for a post in a topic
Byfuglien had only like 34 points in the regular season. He was a team worst -11 in the regular season. He was tied for a team worst -4 in the postseason. Byfuglien had an offensive outburst in the postseason which is why I understand the current trend to like him. He is not worth 3m. He hasn't shown that he can continually produce and do it consistently. I honestly don't see him fitting in with the Red Wings because of his semi liability in the defensive zone. He will fit in somewhere and be a major contributor but it will have to be on a certain team in which defense isn't a major priority, ie not the red wings. I don't know of a replacement for Byfuglien but I'd rather have someone like Asham. That guy played exactly how I would want someone in a Wings jersey to play and he has a nice scoring touch for being a "grinder". For the price especially Asham > Byfuglien in my mind. edit: my answer was no if you didn't get it from the post lol -

Doing that would eliminate their ability to attract any free agents in the future and would definitely put some heat on them in the future when dealing with other teams. Waiving perfectly healthy and relatively young previous big name FA signings to make cap room is not going to endear them to future FA talent. Furthermore, the NHLPA would likely make a stink. If this solution was as viable as people seem to think we wouldn't see so many bloated contracts sit around (see: Edmonton). The fact remains that waiving players is typically isolated to inexperienced or aging players who can't cut it anymore and need to be moved to the minors because they don't want to retire. Huet and Campbell are both perfectly healthy and neither is looking to retire any time soon. I don't buy this theory for a second. They may do it but they'll isolate themselves from the NHLPA community a great deal. -

Toews: Most undeserving Conn Smyth winner in history?
dobbles reacted to RockyMountainWingGal for a post in a topic
He had 3 goals all POs in 22 games. One in the finals, which is an improvement over last year. He was all zeros across the board the last three games - which, imo, just re-emphasizes that he is not a clutch player. And don't spit out he does all the little things - he is paid to score. He's not a 4th line grinder. But whatever, some people seem to think it was OK that he floated around for 7 games of the finals last year with the Wings, and just dandy that he finally won. He rode along with three contending teams - and the odds finally paid off. IMO he was a HUGE part of costing the Wings a Cup so don't expect me to cheer for him - ever. -

Exacly what I was thinking! The f'ing Hawks man! Well those F'ing Hawks traded you because they realized they weren't gonna win with you! Oh and I do remember 2001, he said Detroit offered him the exact same contract but he felt Philly had the better team and better chance to win the Cup. Then he said after the 2002 finals, "Well if I knew they were gonna get Hasek, I may have made a different choice" Well, maybe if you wouldn't had agreed to a contract the night before UFA started you would've seen that we would trade for Hasek, and sign Robitaille and Hull later on. Hmmmmmmm, who had the better team again? JR, if you would've singed in Detroit, you would've finished your career in Detroit, because that is the kind of franchise we are! Why do you think your boy Chelios stayed here so long? We all remember how much he hated Detroit, he said on live tv that he'd never come here! Funny how that worked out eh? Maybe you should've took his advice afterall! You'd have 2 Cups! "It's the Blackhawks man... sniff sniff, that should be me down there! Why Why Why!?!?! Waaaaaah!" I don't feel sorry for him, except for his decision making skills... No, this was being a baby. Mike Modano crying was a moment. -

Toews: Most undeserving Conn Smyth winner in history?
zoso reacted to GMRwings1983 for a post in a topic
Niedermayer is the most undeserving winner in history. He scored like 11 points in Anaheim's Cup run, and won the Smythe. And unlike say, Scott Stevens in 2000, Niedermayer could hardly be called a shut-down specialist in those playoffs. Toews won by default. If Philly had won, Briere or Leino would have been the frontrunners, but who else for Chicago could have gotten it, despite Toews' s***ty Finals. -
1 pointIn this day and age of big speedy forwards, and great two way players, why in the world would the Wings resign Holmstrom? He is only good for the powerplay, he is a liability on defense, & my grandma can skate faster than him. This was our chance to get younger, faster, bigger with Free agency. We signed Lidstrom, okay fine, still think we paid too much, but I'm okay with it. I'm not okay with the human pylon being resigned. We probably should have kept Leino instead of Holmstrom seeing as how he is playing right now. I'm also starting to think we should have kept Steve Yzerman & let Holland walk too, that was a bad move for the future Holland, you blew it!
