Apparently, we were finalists for Vokoun?

Manny was an unknown goalie at that stage. Hasek was the undisputed #1. That was almost undoubtedly a condition of the trade, hence the Wings getting rid of Osgood. What risk? Waiving Jimmy to get a one-year contract with a goalie who is in the twilight of his career? How's that low-risk?

I dont think we need a top 4 D... I want a winger with our cap space... It is Kronwall's time to get a bigger role with the Wings. He can take over as the number 2 defenseman with White and Stuart in the 3/4 slots. In stead of worrying about trying to replace Rafalski and Lidstrom we only have to replace 1. Kronwall can be a number 2 on our team and the added pressure of knowing he needs to play up to that level could push him. crash

    Backup Goalie?

Osgood's lackluster performance has been around longer than his groin issues in my opinion. I don't want to see him back, mostly because he never seems to have any drive anymore. His attitude (and performance) to me have been what he can get by with for the last 2 seasons. The groin issues (and how he's handled it) just make things worse. There's better options on the market (still), and I'd prefer we get a contender who will both push Jimmy, and take some of the workload off his shoulders.

I guess I'm the only one around here who remembers Howard playing lights-out in the playoffs. We have no need for a #1; we need a good backup.

    Holland becomes US citizen

Bet some LGW folks were threatening to call INS if he didn't land a big name FA this summer, therefore he was forced into becoming a citizen.

    Backup Goalie?

And who could blame him? If I was a professional athlete I'd certainly want to go as long as my body can take it and I have a desire to play, win and do something that's fun and get paid to do it. Is it selfish? Yeah, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in this case. If management thinks that he is being too "selfish" to where it is a detriment to the team, they'll tell him it is time to finally move on. When Osgood was in last season, he did fine (not really the case the season before). It is risky in one way if Osgood comes back with the healthy angle, but low-risk to me in another way. I think MacDonald is more than capable of being backup (EDIT: if the need arises where he has to be called up for more than just a game or two). Minus one game against St. Louis where pretty much everybody there s**t a brick, he played very well last season for the most part, had good numbers, etc. You could certainly make the case that goaltending depth is thin or worrysome, but I'm looking at it from the half-glass full view. Howard has proved he can play when it counts in the postseason. We all know Osgood has been loyal to the Wings/vice versa and can still play in a reduced role. MacDonald and the organization are familiar with each other. Heck, if they go the Conklin route, that worked out well the season he was here, so I'd be all for that. I don't think the situation is as dire as could be perceived (though I certainly get the worrysome angle, it is legitmate). EDIT: A part of me though wants Osgood to retire, for the only reason because of fans in here and in general acting like moronic lunatics towards him so they'd just shut the hell up about him finally.

    Backup Goalie?

As big of an Ozzie fan I've been over the years, I think he's done. That groin injury will never go away. I voted WILDCARD B*TCHES! - Someone out of left field.

    Backup Goalie?

Unfortunately for Ozzie, there isn't a way to prove he'll stay healthy. He's played in just 35 games over the past two years. I would love to have him back, but the durability doesn't appear to be there and Howard can't play 75 games and be ready for the playoffs.

The Detroit Red Wings aren't expected to spend much more this offseason, not that they've committed much to the future at all. And there's good reason for that. The Detroit News' Ted Kulfman writes, "Next season's potential unrestricted free agent group is so good. Absolutely loaded, actually. While this free-agent class one had a bunch of depth players, next year's is filled with difference makers worth spending the extra millions." The Wings could make a really big splash next offseason because they have no free agents they'll have to pay huge salaries, except maybe Nicklas Lidstrom -- if he decides to come back. If he doesn't, though, there are several elite free agents they could pay with that money, including Zach Parise, Brent Burns, Patrick Sharp and -- perhaps most intriguingly -- Shea Weber. Losing both Brian Rafalski this season and potentially Lidstrom next season could make them an ideal destination for the 2010-11 Norris Trophy finalist.

    Seating Question

I know this doesent answer the thread but it makes me want to go to a game so bad. A lot of people like to rip on the Joe for being old and stuff but I dont think there is a bad seat in the house maybe because I dont get to go to many games but just being there in Detroit is the greatest feeling in the world. Sure the bathrooms are pretty bad and if you are claustrophobic you will probably be in trouble walking out after the game but its all worth it. I can't wait for hockey.

    RFA/UFA Signings

Creepy ass response, but I completely agree with the player comparison. I'd bring on Semin for a 1 year (tryout).

    RFA/UFA Signings

I don't disagree that they are but huge pussys, but at least Semin's ***** squirts and I can enjoy it more! Hudler is just a useless dried up ***** that not only doesn't hit or battle for the puck, but cannot score for crap. So they are both pussys, but Semin at least scores...and unlike Hudler, if you put Semin on Datsyuk's line, he will flourish...

ironic that the common consensus on LGRW.COM would be that datsyuk is better then ovechkin... seems like the homerism is overpowering the logic. ovechkin is 25 years old datsyuk is 32 career points for dats = 221 goals, 651 points in 662 games for ovie = 301 goals 614 points in 475 games in ovies 6 years in the league he has scored more then 50 goals 4 times, 1 of the 4 being a 65 goal season. in datsyuks 9 years with detroit, the most goals he has put up in a season was 32(08) which ties ovechkins lowest goal total since entering the league (2010). datsyuks 2nd most goals in a season is 31(07)... so if you add dats goal totals from 07 and 08 ovechkin still outscored him with just his 07 goal total. (32+31= 63, vs 65)some of you may say thats not fair, because dastyuk isn't a goal scorer... which is fine because we can also look at assists. datsyuks top season for assists was 66 in 07... ovechkin had 59 in 2010, just 7 less. dont see datsyuk doubling ovechkin in assists like ovechkin does datsyuk in goals most years. datsyuk has never had a 100 point season (97 twice) at age 32 whereas ovechkin has 4 at age 25 ovechkin is 5th all time for regular season goals per game above bure and gretzky, behind lemieux and bossy.... good company. 4th on all time list of playoff points per games (ahead of messier and orr) 2nd in playoff goals per game behind super mario 7th all time in regular season points per game could probably do this all day.... dont want to because pav is like my favorite player but its really not even that close on paper and thats just me being objective because i really dont like ovechkin all that much. as a red wing fan and a hockey fan its good to be objective about things becuase most people arent. (hence 95% of people on LGRW saying dats > ovie). i just dont think a poll of hfboards or nhl would show people unanimously agreeing that datsyuk is better then ovie.

Yeah, I can see your point on this! 20 years is an accomplishment, and I can also see where your coming from on Bettman helping the Oilers as well, as a "Hey you got the leagues support on this" and I am certain there are things he cannot comment on as well.

Don't get me wrong, though, I think Bettman is a complete ass. He's snide and condescending when he speaks to the media. On top of it all he's dismissive of the fans' concerns. A guy like Bettman should stay behind the scenes dealing with the owners and with coporate interests.

This account is usually pretty credible on rumors, at least they have so far. The only problem I see here, is that I dont believe there is anybody left we could be interested now that we have signed White and Commo. That leads me to think this is wrong. What do you guys think? Who else is even out there? Would it have to be a trade to get anyone else?

He's a lawyer. That means chances he is a liberal are very high. Then, if he's a liberal, then it is in his blood, government must help him, otherwise <...insert any threatening...> get rid of this *******, the sooner, the better. One word. Capitalism. Many seem to forget this simple word.
