    Nick, Homer retirement, New Captain

It's been known for some time that Zetterberg is the next captain. As for Lidstrom's supposed decline near the end of the season, have you ever played a sport with a deep bone bruise on your ankle?

the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Detroit Red Wing Hockey Clubs, still the last teams to win consecutive Stanley Cups: Thank you!

Nick Lidstrom did not have a decline this season, he was playing through a deep bone ankle injury... if you knew what that is like then you would know how that affects your game a lot more than you think. Before that, he was a leading candidate for the Norris so it is safe to say that there is no decline this season for Nick. Also Nick has stated recently that he will never sign a contract and state that "this will be my last season." Nick is a classy guy and would not want to make a season about him... Now I think he will sign for one more year and he will once again be our best dman regardless of if we sign Suter or not. As for Homer, I am thinking that we bring him back 1 last year. He is a veteran who will be hungry and he was one of our best players in the playoffs, competing every shift. I also think it is really important he comes back because him and Nick are best friends, always go out for lunch on a home game day, and always drive to the Joe together for games... pretty important that they both come back.

Crazy, but serious, off season predictions

That would be ok. At least if Homer retires, Nick would have a ride to work.

    Shorter Overtimes

Seems like overtimes have ended a lot faster the last few years than I can ever remember. The marathon overtime games of the past are fading away. About 10 years ago especially, there were multiple OT games seemingly every night. I guess in one sense, this era of hockey brings more exciting back and forth OT's, hence the game ends faster. Ten years ago, there was more trapping and less chances, hence the games went on longer. Of course, there are still games from time to time that go multiple OT's (we already had one in these playoffs), but I'm noticing they're becoming more rare. Personally, I miss seeing longer overtime games, especially when other teams are playing. Just seeing the grind and tear that long games have on the players adds to the playoff excitement. Goals in such games are so backbreaking for the team that loses them. Now, the games end before I can even sit down to watch the OT.

#7 Washington Capitals vs. #2 Boston Bruins

Headline: Third-string rookie outplays Tim Thomas. Secondary headline: Tyler Seguin should be ashamed of himself for his awful series.

You are right. It was probably Johan Franzen.

Well since this is the realist thread, I'll be realer than real and say that hypothetically we don't make any moves for anyone. If so our team could look like this... Bert-Pav-Franzen Flip-Z-Nyquist Cleary-Helm-Eaves/Miller Mursak-Abby-Eaves/Miller Lids-White Kronwall-Quincey Ericsson-Kindl/Smith Kindl/Smith While I don't know if it would win the cup or not I think it looks better than the team we fielded during the playoffs this year. Any thoughts?

Detroit has inside track on Parise

Hey it worked with Hull...he mentioned more than once that he was impressed with the fact that Yzerman and Shanahan both tooks cuts (actually they deferred salary) in order to sign him... I wish Lids would tell Holland that he will sign for "whatever it takes" to get Suter AND Parise here...

To sign 12 players.... I suppose if you signed a bunch of guys to minimum contracts to keep guys like Gill and both Kostitsyns it could work. But there is no way the Predators will be seriously in on Parise.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment of Nashville. While it is true they will have a ton of cap space it is only true because they have 15 players who will be RFA or UFA after this year. Sign Suter, Weber, and Rads and leave 10-12 mil for another 12 players which includes both Kostitsyns, MacLellan, Gaustad, Tootoo, Gill, and a number of others? Me thinks not. http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=19

Scary thing is they could afford it. LGW would implode. If I'm Nashville, I'm making it my priority to give Weber and Suter ANYTHING they want. Nashville can afford to match what even the most desperate teams would pay for them. I'll be curious to see what they do with Radulov though. Given the limited amount of NHL time he's had, I can't really predict the range that his salary will be in.

Rinne. He moves the puck better than half our current defense.
