Where has NHL scoring gone?
Wheelchairsuperhero and one other reacted to dropkickshanahans for a post in a topic
My theory for the low scoring is the modern butterfly style dominating the league, as well as lots of those goalies being bigger now, or at least playing aggressive enough to look bigger. Had to do some quick research and it looks like there were only a few goalies back then that implemented dropping to the knees in some situations, with only a couple goalies throughout the years actually using the style as a main like Tony Esposito and later Patrick Roy. It seemed to me that there was a bigger transition somewhere in the '90s/early 2000s where current pros switched to a hybrid or came into the league with some type of hybrid playstyle, where now today the butterfly style is dominant across the league. I wonder how much scoring would be achieved back then if goalies had better masks and the butterfly was more popular; It seemed that a lot of goals back then that you can find on youtube were low-- between and around the skates. -

UFA/RFA Re-Signing, What Does Everyone Get?
red and white forever reacted to number9 for a post in a topic
IMO this offseason is about re-signing the right contracts and adding a D-man. Wondering what everyone thinks about our expiring contracts and what they will get. I think Alfredsson (retirement) Bertuzzi (retirement) and Cleary (sucks) will be gone, but I listed them anyway in case they come back. Player - CapHit - Age Legwand (4.5) (33) Alfredsson (3.5) (41) Bertuzzi (2.075) (39) Cleary (1.75) (35) Sheahan (785) (22) Tatar (630) (23) Glendening (575) (24) Quincey (3.775) (28) DeKeyser (925) (24) Gustavsson (1.5) (29) Didn't list contracts that likely won't go up or down by much, aka the Almqvists of the world. -
1 pointJust putting the question out there. What would it take and are you willing to give it up? Weber is everything Babs and Kenny wants. A physical right handed player that eats up minutes. His contract was front loaded, so a lot of the money owed to him has already been paid out, and with the cap going up we can easily take on his cap number. The only untouchable young player for me are Mantha and DeKeyser. I wish Kenny was more aggressive when Weber was a RFA. 4 first round picks sounds like a steal to me.

1 pointRich, I think you're missing the distinction between legit #1 defenseman and elite, superstar level defensman. Weber is elite. Weber is a superstar. Weber is easily a top 5 dman in the game, probably top 3. If that's your cutoff for #1 guy then you're right, Kronner is not that. But if that's your cutoff, then there might be 5 in the world. Kronwall would not be a #1 on any team, but he would be a #1 on a lot of teams. As far as the Quincey comment, before you tell everyone else on a public hockey forum that they're not allowed to voice their opinion on players because they're not qualified, show us your qualifications.

Official Detroit Lions thread

Getting Tate is amazing. I don't think we've had this balanced of a team in my life. Heck, we haven't lost a game since we signed him. So far, so good! -
1 pointJust friggin' put Pulkkinen in the lineup already. Babs is always complaining that the kids line doesn't shoot enough. And, hey, remember when Pulkkinen got suspended for running that Blackhawk from behind? He can score and be our enforcer. Like Shanahan. Same exact thing.

The Leaders HAVE to step up
brett reacted to GMRwings1983 for a post in a topic
Our leaders put the team in jeopardy by playing hurt in the Olympics. These other leaders you refer to are veterans, but they're not in the same league in terms of talent. We're not making the playoffs without Datsyuk and Zetterberg, no matter how many other old players we have. -

What would it take a get Shea Weber?
Cloune reacted to Hockeymom1960 for a post in a topic
Nothing after what he did to Z. Screw Weber -
1 pointAlso, we moved on from Flip. I can't believe we didn't see his replacement being injured for the whole season coming. And, also, we bought out Colaiacovo because he's so...injury-prone.
-
1 pointUnfortunately Dan the Hammer Cleary is also out with a knee injury. I say we ice Micky Redmond, did you see that pass to Sergei during the Alumni game? He looked great out there...he took charge of the team and was the defacto leader. This new top line would probably contribute more: Al Sobotka / Micky Redmond / Gordie Howe

1 pointi don't know if this belongs here, but since it's "injury updates", edzo is out for tonight's game between Boston and Montreal because of throat infection. the Gods must have punished him for the verbal crap he spewed during sunday's game

Howard = Average
Z Winged Dangler reacted to DatsyukianDekes for a post in a topic
Those teams also don't have Datsyuk and Zetterberg is my point. They don't have two elite two way forwards yet they have either gone just as far as the Wings, or further in the last couple years. Did you forget we had Lids, Raf, Kronwall, Stuart and Howie couldn't win? Those 4 are better than any top 4 you just named. Then mix in D and Z. Do you remember when Nashville knocked us out ? Do you remember the performance Rinne put on? We couldn't even score. Toronto forwards are fast but suck ass on defense, and their top 4 are not good at all (I watch quite abit of Leaf games). They took Boston to game 7 and should have went to the next round except for the choke. We have a better team then New York, but Lunqvist keeps them in every single year and have made it further then us in a couple playoffs now since 2009. Howard just doesn't have what it takes to get it done when it matters. This year just screams, not so good D = your true goalie. -

Is the Real Brendan Smith Finally Starting the Show Up?
Motown4013 reacted to kipwinger for a post in a topic
I actually think with Kindl it's about guts, and with Smith it's about smarts. Kindl won't take a hit to make a good pass...Smith WILL take the hit AND THEN turn around and make the bad pass. It's hard to gauge what's worse, a coward or an idiot. -

1 pointI can't keep track of which people are mad about the trade and which are mad that we never make trades and the large group of people who seem to be upset about both. Glad Kenny did something, we'll see how it turns out in the end but I'm not too upset. Have to give something to get something despite what many seem to think.

1 pointI hope he plays. Let's go balls out, so to speak. All the firepower we have should be up. Vets experience will be needed in tghe playoffs but right now if a player can score, they should play.

Red Wings have Recalled Pulkkinen from Grand Rapids

But,but, but there are so many forwards ahead of him,you know -
1 pointNot to delve into hyperbole, but Wings fan should be more excited this wasn't the prospect traded yesterday. Besides Mantha, he's the only guy who projects as an above-average goal scorer we have in the farm system at the moment. Unlike Järnkrok, he's just adjusted beautifully to the North American style of play. Hes been one of the Griffins best guys all year, and he loves to shoot. Reading scouting reports about his shot is fun - you should all try it some time. Names like "Kurri" and "Hull" are mentioned more than once. I hope he plays soon. I'm a big, big fan of his. Go get em, kid.
