How do you define "competitive"? Winning the Stanley Cup every year? Holland's Wings are competitive. They win more than they lose. They go to the playoffs, EVERY YEAR. They're just a couple players away from a championship team. There are 30 teams. 30 GMs. 53% chance of making the playoffs 27% chance of making it to the second round 13% chance of making it to the conference finals 7% chance of making it to the cup finals 3% chance of winning the cup Under Holland since '97, this is how we've done: 100% - Made Playoffs 64% - made it to second round 31% - made it to conference finals 25% - made it to Stanley Cup finals 19% - won Stanley Cup It's time for people to chill. You can't always win, but damn, we sure do win more than we don't.

I hope this series goes 7 and wears on them both as much as possible, with Game 7 going to quadruple OT.

Who is the coach next season?

True, but the Pens also still had some of their best players around all year to carry the burden. The Wings had un-experienced kids carrying the load almost all season. realgud

So, the Griffs won....forced a final game 5 for tomorrow, Sunday. *crickets*

Mule's contract doesn't count towards the cap while he is on injured reserve. His contract does not hurt the team what so ever if he cant play.

If ever there was a time to make a trade for a top tier defensemen while giving up some young excess talented forwards in return, it's now. You never want to trade away potential goal scorers and I get that but we have too many mistakes in our back end and zero offense coming from our blue line. We have to change that. I think this will be Babcocks message and plea to Holland. Oh....and can we please get some size?

Doesn't sound like Holland will do much during UFA season this summer, other than hope the team has "growth from within". http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2015/05/red_wings_not_counting_on_quic.html I know I know. It's shocking.

He told them he was ok afterwards and that he didn't think it was a dirty hit. Unfortunately, today's NHL counts that as a sign of head injury. Normal Bolts dive and whine.

I don't disagree with you, and while size is a definite need. I think the Wings really badly need 2 d men and a dependable scoring winger. I'd probably prefer a top scorer to a D man. I'd also prefer for Holland to get all his shopping done in the summer. Since other then this past year, he's traditionally passive at the deadline.

Comparing Z & D to Nyquist and Tatar is not helping anyone. Zetterberg took his great leap forward at the age of 19/20, and by 22 was a more complete player than either of our new kids, and came straight to the NHL on a stacked roster. Similar with Dats, who arrived with less hurrah, but his team-mates (especially one Brett Hull) were very vocal in saying that he would be a star. Of course, both had the advantage of being able to develop under the radar to a degree due to the fact that that roster was bolstered by 6 guys who finished with comfortably over 1000 points, and Larionov who would have done had he been allowed over here before he was. And Chelli. And the grind line. And Homer. Apart from the bottom two pairing on D and in net that was as good a roster as any of us have seen. I would imagine, if Tats and Nike were 3rd liners on a stacked outfit, the transition would be easier. But ultimately anyone hoping our new euro kids will match the twins is only making a rod for their backs. As I've said elsewhere, if you want a comparison, they are basically slightly more talented versions of Slava Kozlov without the same playoff touch. Very good complimentary players who are unlikely to ever be core stars. But for a mid 2nd and a 5th, that's already far more than this organisation has the right to expect.

Wrong. Nyquist in 4 seasons - Season: 179 Games played - 115 points. PPG 0.64 Playoffs: 30 Games played - 7 points PPG 0.23 Zetterberg in 4 seasons - Season: 280 Games played - 240 points. PPG 0.85 Playoffs: 40 Games played - 25 points PPG 0.625 Statistically, Zetterberg was better in his first 4 seasons in both playoffs and in regular season than Nyquist. Datsyuk in 4 seasons - Season: 284 Games played - 241 points. PPG 0.85 Playoffs: 42 Games played - 21 points PPG 0.5 Datsyuk had the same exact Point per game ratio in his first 4 seasons as Zetterberg and still higher than Nyquist in his first four seasons. Datsyuk's playoff numbers were inferior to Zetterberg's in his first 4 seasons but it was still better than Nyquists. Can't look at Tatar's number's quiet yet as he's only played 2 legitimate seasons and playoffs. Both Zetterberg and Datsyuk also killed penalties and had more responsibilities than Tatar and Nyquist did (or ever will, they simply are not even close to being as good defensively as the other two were).

Agreed ... I do think it's almost a certainty Phaneuf will end up here ... Grand Rapids win then Babs will travel for game 5 with holland and I'm sure a lot will be said on that trip Babs also said he got into an argument with his wife ... Can't help but think that had to do with the mention of Edmonton (reminds me of pronger and his wife lol) Seriously doubt his wife will give the okay to go to Edmonton and spend -40 days over there ... I'd say there's no way he goes there Only teams I'd see Babs leaving us for would be a San Jose/Pittsburgh/saint louis type situation

Who is the coach next season?

Lots of teams? Like who? The first one I can kind of think of is Carolina. And they at least had Staal. Quenneville had an 88 point player in Kane, a 68 point great two way forward in Toews, and a Norris winning defenseman in Keith. And Hossa. So he had three superstar forwards and a great #1 d-man. Quenneville hadn't been to the Cup finals until he coached a team with that talent. Sutter didn't win the Cup until he had Kopitar, Doughty, Quick, along with Brown, Richards and Carter. Sutter had several great forwards, a great #1 d-man, and a great playoff goaltender. Are you really saying those two teams won the Cup without players of the calibre of Datsyuk and Zetterberg?

I may have been influenced by the number on the back of the sweater but initially I thought Datsyuk would be like Slava Kozlov. A guy with great hands and some nifty moves who could be a great supporting piece but not one of the main guys. Man was I wrong. That being said I don't think we have a Datsyuk or Zetterberg in Nyquist or Tatar, but I'd love to be wrong again.

should mrazek get #1 tag next season

I disagree with this. Conklin (V2.0) was a disaster in St. Louis and Holland brought him back and he was a disaster here. Then Gustavsson ended up being a horrible signing. The only good goaltending signing Holland has made recently is Joey MacDonald.Holland even gave Gustavsson A RAISE after proving he was more useless than Magic Johnson at a blood drive for two years. Guys like Greiss, Montoya etc were available last summer for half as much, but Holland decided to overpay Glasstavsson.

My issue with Thornton is *why*. Everyone ******* and makes fun of the Wings for signing guys in their mid 30s on the downside of their prime. Thornton embodies that. My issue is that signing Thornton would be the kind of thing the Wings would be *expected* to do. He's a prototypical Detroit Red Wings Signing . We need to step outside of our ******* comfort zone and try to fill in the middle--no more young guys in their early 20s with minimal experience. No more aging vets. I want prime meat, dammit! GIVE ME A 28 YEAR OLD STUD!!!!! *ahem* I also don't want to see Thornton stroke his rooster whilst wearing the winged wheel, but that's beside the point...
