So when Lidstrom was winning Norris trophies, we loved the award. Now that Karlsson wins, the trophy is crap. Am I following this thread correctly?

Still think there should be 2 awards for best D-man. Offensive (The Orr Award) and Defensive (The Lidstrom Award).

I would like to see Kenny work that Old Holland Magic and make a couple sneaky-shrewd moves that pay off in a major way and, in turn, make him look like a total genius. I like Alex Chiasson, who could be had for peanuts and/or lint. I like Alex Semin, who could be had for Andersson and [insert players who make us wish that amnesty buyouts were still a thing, e.g. Weiss, Kindl, Ericsson]. I like Dustin Byfuglien, who would be the best (or an extremely close second-best) defenseman on this Wings team and could be acquired for substantially less than his true trade value. (The catch being that he has only a year left on his contract and that he will most definitely Get Paid next summer. Would we be able to pay him? Hard to say. Would it be worth it? Also hard to say.) I like Mike Green, who could be had for only money. (I think Byfuglien is the better high-scoring, right-shooting, smooth-skating, 30-year-old American defenseman who "can't play defense and sucks." But if he's going to cost us a really good asset - say, Jurco or Pulkkinen - and then demand $7.5M x 6 years...Mike Green might be the better option. Unless Mike Green demands $6.5M x 5 years, in which case...well, there are plenty of other defensemen I like.) I like a lot of players. I don't buy this "Well, in terms of trades, Phaneuf is pretty much the only realistic option, and we're not interested in him, so I guess we're standing pat" mentality. There are always deals out there. The Sharks got Brent Burns and a second-round pick for Devon Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle, and a first-round pick. Don't tell me "There's no hockey store" or "It takes two to dance." (And don't tell me it's all about getting more out of our young players when Cleary is still in the picture.) Imagine a line of Tatar-Datsyuk-Semin. Imagine DeKeyser paired with Byfuglien and Kronwall paired with Quincey or Marchenko. This team is a couple additions away from being really, really good.

I don't know about cheap.

We take a kid who can play centre, wing, defense and goalie. 4 players in one. Go with a 20 man roster, save some cap space and win the Cup.

Here's a thought. Everyone hates the "loser point" because it makes some games worth more than others (which can effect other teams in the standings) and because people are afraid that players play it safe to get "at least one point", thus bringing on the shootout. How about if we have 2 points to the winner in regulation or overtime, and 1 point for winning a shootout. Loser gets nothing either way. If everyone knows that they're going home empty-handed with a loss either way, but they only get a point for winning in the shootout, they'll kill or die to get it done beforehand. Yes, it has an effect on the standings, but it only hurts the teams that let it go to a shootout instead of their competition.

I don't think Karlsson is as bad as most contend, but I really can't believe Keith didn't get another. That guy was rel gud, and I hate the hawks as much as the next guy.

Go big or go home. If they can't get a high end player somehow, let the younger guys fill bigger roles instead of signing some average player like Soderberg or any defenseman on the free agent market.

That press conference was a master stroke by Brian Burke. He became the champion of "Ye Olde Tyme Hockey" by glorifying Colton Orr at the same time as he was effectively waiving him and ending his pro career. "Look at Colton Orr here", Burke gestures, "Why he's the prototype of what a hockey player should be. All heart, knuckles, and square jaw. I love this kid as if he were my own son.
