This time last year, people were saying Glendening isn't any good. Ferraro is a better skater [note: he is a superb skater], he's a more natural scorer [note: he has consistently been one of the Griffins' top producers and, arguably, one of their most skilled, most complete, most valuable players], he's well-versed in Jeff Blashill's brand of puck-possession hockey, he can kill penalties, he can take faceoffs, he can agitate, he didn't look out of place against the Lightning, he complemented Miller and Glendening quite well.........the kid gets my vote for the 4RW spot. And I say all this as someone who had pretty much written him off. That he won me over, in the span of a few NHL playoff games? That counts for something in my book.

"Lando" won me over in the playoffs. His skating alone makes him a valuable asset. Yes, it’s taken him a very long time just to become a fourth-line winger (and even then, he's not guaranteed a spot on the roster), but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a fringe NHLer. Maybe he’s just a late bloomer. Look at Glendening. He made his NHL debut at 24 years old. (Ferraro turns 24 next month.) This time last summer, he was 25. He’d scored one goal in 56 regular season games. Babcock loved him, but most Wings fans considered him an experiment that was doomed to fail. What a difference a year makes! amirite??? I feel Ferraro is another Glendening. I think he deserves the chance we gave Glendening. Those two and Miller were very good together against the Lightning, and I wouldn’t mind seeing what that line could do in a full season. Drewbacca - Luke - Lando. It's meant to be.

Happy to see former Red Wings Patrick Eaves and Carlo Colaiacovo sign contracts this off season. Patrick Eaves scored 14 goals in 47 games last year with Dallas. That'll usually go a long way toward getting you a new contract.

We also don't need Yandle now that we have Green.

I'm not saying we should sign Franson. You asked what people see in Franson and you said he's basically a right-shooting Quincey. What people see in Franson, when you get right down to it, is that he's a high-end offensive defenseman. Quincey is not a high-end offensive defenseman. Here's the longer version. Franson turns 28 in a month. He's 6'5". He shoots right (and shoots well). He has good offensive instincts and offensive ability. He's a good puck mover. He's an asset on the power play. He's a top-four offensive defenseman who could, in theory, be one half of an elite team's top pairing. For the most part, he hasn't played for especially talented teams, which makes his consistently good point production that much more impressive and, by logical extension, begs the question: Have we only seen the tip of the iceberg? If you put him on the right team and in a role that really makes sense for him and the team, you might very well get an all-star defenseman. Between Franson and Quincey, Quincey might be the better defender, i.e. Quincey's play without the puck might be better than Franson's play without the puck. But Quincey, like Franson, does make his fair share of stupid mistakes. And Quincey, like Franson, isn't a great skater. One could argue Quincey is Franson without the offensive ability (e.g. puck movement) and scoring prowess. Quincey was solid for us last season, but it's worth pointing out that he was paired with DeKeyser, who's a stud. From Winging It In Motown: (Link) I wouldn't mind Franson at the right price. Yes, we just added a scoring defenseman in Mike Green, but I'd like to see us add one more top-four defenseman who can put up points. Green gets us into the playoffs and maybe into the second round. Green and Byfuglien gets us one of the better D groups in the league and a real shot at the Cup.

Mainly because he's consistently shown that when young guys accept the bridge deal, if they deliver, Kenny will bring the $$$ to the next negotiations. I think it'll be 3.5-4 over 2 or 3 years.

Kind of like people. Watching them is dull, but setting them off is fun.
  9. 1 point
But that's what I was saying: Tatar last season doesn't matter since it happened after his contract was signed. Goose has more numbers to back up his negotiation then what got Tatar his deal. 54pts (Nyquist) vs. 39pts. (Tats) - including 8 more goals - is far apart to me. If you compare salaries for players with that point differential I think they would be very different. And add Nyquist's rookie season where he scored about a goal for every 2 games (28 in 57). It's a different situation. 3.5 is closer to the ballpark. I'd say that's the lowest possible. Holland is pretty good at keeping RFA salaries down.
  10. 1 point
He's definitely not getting Tatar's deal. TT signed that deal with 1 season of 19g, 20a, 39pts (79games). Nyquist has 2 seasons of 28g, 48pts (57games) and 27g. 54 pts. (82 games) Those are not really similar numbers at all. And he's more proven than TT was at the time - he'll get more or he should fire his agent. I think you meant that they had similar numbers for this past year, but that has no real relevance.

He put up 37 points in his first full NHL season, and is only 23. He is going to be a very good player for the Capitals.

He's the backup goalie for Chicago who carried them until their started pulled his head out of his jockstrap and started winning again. He deserves a Cup tat. He won it.

It should be there and will. Fedorov was offered virtually identical contract in DECEMBER of 2002. He asked Holland if he could wait to decide because he was in the middle of a divorce and looking for a new agent. Wben all that settled and Fedorov WANTED to sign the contract that was offered to him in DECEMBER, he was told it was no longer on the table and was offered a contract with less term and worth less money. The organization slapped Feds in the face because he didn't want to make the decision in the middle of very personal issues going on in his life. Feds left and signed nearly exact contract (from December) with Anaheim. In NO way can you compare Fedorov with Yashin...apples and oranges when it comes to production and honoring contracts. When Fedorov was making league minimum ($285,000) at the time, he never ONCE asked to be paid more or held out to renegotiate anything. The Wings gave him a raise before his contract was up, along with an extension. Then when 1997-98 come around, the Wings told him to field offers from other teams if he felt like it, they were going to match whatever was offered anyhow. The ONLY reason Karmanos offered Feds so much up front is because (as it is known) he and Ilitch are bitter rivals and near enemies and Karmonos would have loved to have poached this prized possession from his rival. You cannot blame Feds or accepting such an offer because he knew that Wings would match and he would pretty much be guaranteed all that money up front...he wouldn't have gotten it from Carolina, they would have never made the conference finals. BUT for the rest of the contract, from 1998-2003, Feds only may slightly over $2M, which is what he was making basically from his raise he got from Detroit in the mid 90's. So for nearly 10 years (outside of his bonuses) Feds was making $2M or less per season for all he did for this franchise and all the accolades he was getting in the NHL. So be pissed at him because he actually wanted to sign the original 5 year $55M offer and he left when it was lessoned to 4 years $40M? Be pissed at Holland or whoever pulled the offer, because if the offer still stood at 5 years $55M, he would've never left the organization and this would not even be up or debate. They pissed each other off, sure, no argument there, but the number deserves to be recognized and put up in the rafters with the rest of the Wings Elite. It's time, it's deserving and needs to be done. Sergei Federov - Hart, Selke, All-Star, All Rookie, Hall of Fame, Stanley Cup Champion. Its a no brainer, if the number doesn't go up, its because this organization is nothing but a crybaby grudge holding hunk of garbage when it come to this subject. Honor your ELITE, Fedorov helped build this team to its greatness, he bled for it, he suffered for it, he left his family for it. You pulled the offer from him, its time to atone for that mistake. Put #91 up there next to #5 and #19, perhaps the THREE reasons that this team achieved such greatness throughout the 90's into the 2000's, alone they could not have done it, but together they made this franchise Elite.

If a deal is in the pipeline for bringing in a #1/2 D you can bet your house O or Marchy will be in that deal. The day Big E and Q are our 3rd pairing is the day we'll be a legit contender, until then it is what it is.

I don't think people are saying that? It's more like... "Blashill says he's going to give Kindl and Smith a chance to play 'their' game in Detroit." I guess it depends on what you think KH has in mind. Is it going for it? If he is, he'll keep these seven defenders on the team. If he doesn't think this team can compete for the cup, he may very well have the mentality of, "well let's see what we have in these prospects" and allow them to rotate into that bottom pairing. It seemed as if that was his mentality a week ago. Holland went on about the youth movement prior to signing Green and Richards - how these guys need to play in the NHL. Was most likely posturing, but I'm sure he feels the "kids" need to play soon, too. It's not "Ugh, move Quincey, he's ****." It's more like the guy has one year left on his deal, after playing well all year. His is an easy contract to move to a team that thinks they need a solid LH shot. This team isn't moving Ericsson's albatross of a deal, and Blash is on record saying that he wants to give Kindl and Smith a shot. It's more like, "this move can be made to make room for a younger roster player." The bottom line is that I think people are taking everything Holland and Blashill say as gospel, when really anything can change on any given day. Personally, I would like to see a spot on that bottom pairing used to rotate guys like Jensen, Marchenko and Ouellet into the lineup, but it's not the end of the day if it doesn't happen. Though, if this team isn't a cup contender, then why keep Quincey? Guess it depends on your perspective, really.

A couple good reads: http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2015/7/2/8881379/ken-holland-says-NHL-red-wings-will-make-moves-trade-rumors http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2015/7/2/8886619/red-wings-roster-is-kyle-quincey-the-odd-man-out I would be ok with trading Kindl or Quincey or Smith to a team that needs to reach the cap floor and giving the vacant spot to Ouellet or Marchenko. Both Ouellet and Marchenko are clearly NHL-ready. Hell, Babcock wanted Ouellet on the roster straight out of last year's training camp. These are not players who need to make major strides in Grand Rapids to prove they belong in the NHL. The only reason we're having this conversation is because there's a logjam (and the only reason there's a logjam is because Kenny rewarded Kindl and Ericsson with dumb contracts and now the two are pretty much untradable). Sure, Quincey and Ericsson are veteran NHLers and Ouellet and Marchenko aren't, and, in theory, a veteran is "better" than a kid. But we're getting dangerously close to Catch-22 territory. "You need to be an NHLer for me to even consider rating you higher than a veteran NHLer, and until I rate you higher than a veteran NHLer, you can't be an NHLer. Grab dat cheez tho!" I know, I know - better to have a veteran and a largely unproven kid than just an unproven kid. And that's fair enough. But, at the same time...if we're not planning on re-signing Quincey next summer, and we're not going to make a trade for a young stud defenseman, and we're going to continue to preach the need to get younger and quicker and how vitally important it is that the young players all take a step forward this season...maybe, just maybe, having Ouellet (probably the most promising of all our D prospects) on the third pairing instead of Quincey wouldn't be such a bad thing. Is it the safe play? No. Is it the smart play? Honestly, it probably isn't. But we have one of the weaker D groups in the league, and that's largely because we have a spectacular lack of young stud defensemen on the roster. If we're going to build ourselves a Cup-worthy D corps without the aid of a big trade, that means at least one of the Griffins prospects is going to have to become a stud NHL defenseman. Ideally, that happens while Datsyuk and Zetterberg are still elite, which gives us...two years? This may be a situation where "Eh, another year on the farm never hurt anybody" is not the right call.

Quincey was one of our best d-men last season, him and Dekeyser were a really, really good second pair.

Well now that R. Smith has been traded to FLA, maybe we can trade Brendan+ to FLA for a draft pick. I am sure the bros would love to play together! Boy, Boston is having a fire sale this summer...sheesh!
