A 2nd new Wings fan in my family is on the way, though this time around we'll be looking for pink Wings gear! She's "officially" due on July 31st, though she'll actually be here a week or two before that. Parker (my First Wings fan) is ridiculously excited to be an older brother.

Pav gets the Lidstrom treatment. He can sign as many 1 year contracts for however much he wants until he decides he doesn't want to play in the NHL anymore.

I completely agree. My point was that if we get rid of him, I want it to be in a way where we dont eat salary. Getting anything picks/prospects would just be a bonus. My issue with retaining any salary is this: Howard has a 5.29 million cap hit, lets say we retain 2 million, then we are left with 3.29 in cap space. If we sign a good backup at 1.5 million a year (a hillier type), that leaves us with a saving 1.8 million. I would rather have Howard then an inferior backup if the difference is only 1.8 million. Now, if we can trade him and not retain anything, I would do it in a heart beat.

Petr didn't have a full practice today khan said. He shared his net with our 3rd goalie which tells me petr didn't feel he was 100 % ready to go. He will get another practice or 2 in and play Thursday against the Habs.

You can't seriously still be advocating getting rid of Datsyuk are you? He is still the best player on the team at the age of 37 and leads the team in points per game virtually every season. He certainly won't decline that much in the next couple seasons that he won't be more than capable of filling the 3rd line center spot... When you're talking about veteran presence, and players that the kids can learn from, there aren't two better players than Pav and Hank. I want them around as long as possible for Larkin, Mantha and company to soak up as much as they can, while they can... Regardless, if Datsyuk does want to sign a new contract (I think he will), he absolutely should.

Ah, I see what you meant now. I suppose for me it's not so much having any ol' veterans around so much as it is having people with Datsyuk's vision to serve as an example for the kids. Nobody else on the team (or, perhaps, in the league) sees the game as well as he does. Playing next to a guy that smart, responsible, and skilled will teach the young kids a lot about the game that they can't get from playing experience alone. I certainly don't want them learning how to play the game from Ericsson. If we want AA on the ice more often than Glendening, we need to find some better penalty killers. Or be on the PK less often. I'm curious as to what Glendening's 5v5 usage is compared to the other guys. I've already said my piece about Richards on another thread. Also, just to repeat: Luke Glendening is the best face-off man on the Detroit Red Wings roster (statistically).

Exactly. There has to be an experienced NHL backup behind Mrazek at this point. If they want to give Coreau a look next season and see what happens that's great, but they need to have a legit backup on the team in case he doesn't work out. I don't see Holland not signing somebody.

I don't see Howard getting moved until after July 1st anyways, so I'm pretty sure getting Stamkos or not will happen first. I say get rid of Howard when the right deal comes along. If we get rid of him but retain a large % of salary, I would rather just keep him. If a deal come along where we get assets and retain nothing, do it. Nothing against Howie, just cap management.

No. We need go get rid of that contract now. The guy has a poor span of about 3 months every season. He's done in Detroit. Mrazek is our guy and everyone knows it. If he wasn't so sick this past week he'd be starting tomorrow night. Petr will take over Thursday for pretty well the end of the year. We need to dumb Howard's salary to create cap room for going after stammer. It's possible to get him and the only way to even try is to have cap space.

With the resurgence of Howard and Petr coming back down to earth, I can see Holland holding on to Jimmy for another season. The mentioned resurgence will also help in re-signing Petr to a more modest bridge deal. As long as Jimmy plays the way he has been, I don't mind him staying, if it keeps Petr's salary down. I'd say $8M for both would be a great deal.

Yes, let's clutter another thread instead of PMing someone. FFR, mods will always respond to PMs. Posting suggestions, issues or questions in the thread will be deleted, not for any reason other than they are off topic. It's easy to say "delete the posts instead of the thread," but there were 6 pages of it and maybe 4 or 5 posts actually on topic. Which action makes more sense? If everyone does their best to keep things on track, I can actually talk hockey or stay out of the way instead of policing stuff.

Nice to see Tangradi sticking around. Figured he'd help out GR's top-six when he was signed in the summer, but he's done better than I expected.
