I agree, but we all know it's not going to happen... Honestly, I'd be shocked if Holland sheds any contracts other than the one that Vegas takes, which will in all likelihood be one of the smaller contracts that we don't want to lose...

I thought he had a strong start to the season and was earning the dollar but the injury hit him and it felt more like the injury prone Helm of old. I want the Ericsson, Howard, Nielsen contracts gone. But realistically I don't see Nielsen nor Ericsson's going away. I think Howard and Helm's contract have a better chance of being moved and I would pull the trigger. Along with Glendening and Sheahan. Assuming we are truly rebuilding; (I know Holland doesn't call it a "full" rebuild), but even with a partial one, I think if Helm, Glendening, Sheahan, Howard have interest around the league I would move them. Having said all that if there was an opportunity to drop 2 out of the 3 centers (Sheahan, Glendening and Helm), I would keep Helm because he's better than the other two.

I think his signing in a bubble is ok, but combined with Nielsen, Abby, E, Howard etc. I think it was a bad signing. Now if we were to trade the 4 guys I named above, I would have no problem with it. You need to have some vets to help mold the kids, and I think Helm is a great 3C.

We need cap room, but we are not desperate for it this season. I would much rather a guy like Howard who only has 2 years left be allowed to play out his contract, then trading him away with assets to find someone to take him, or buying him out. Now if we get an offer for Howard where we gain, sure take it. If he is picked in the draft, awesome. But I would only give up assets along with the contract dump if LV was taking a guy under contract long term like E or Nieslen, but with Nieslen's NMC that is not happening. Our best bet IMO is to ask LV to take E in the draft and then trade them someone they value that we can part with in exchange for them taking E since I believe this draft is the only way to move E (he has a NTC right?).

Not much has changed for me. I still think he's one of the better bottom 6 forwards in the league when healthy. Slightly overpaid in salary and term, but far from our worst contract. Exactly this.

Why, so he can use that money to give out contracts that are as bad or worse than the ones he dumps? Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

He, along with Abby I do not mind. It's the contracts handed to the likes of disney.com that I sour on.

I've also seen some mocks with Kronwall being protected. I want to believe there's no chance that happens, but I honestly wouldn't put it past Holland to do it... I've been saying for weeks now that we should wait until the trade deadline to trade Green, but part of me wants to trade him before the expansion draft, to gain an extra pick, and to be able to protect another defenseman. I'm not sure who I'd protect between Ouellet and Jensen. I don't think either are any more than 4 / 5 defensemen. I like Jensen because he's a much better skater, and puck mover. I like Ouellet because he's younger, more physical, and probably a little more well rounded. I don't think either would be a huge loss though. Part of me wants to leave Ouellet unprotected so that maybe Vegas would take him over Sproul, who I'd prefer to keep out of all three... Best case scenario would still be to give up an asset for Vegas to take a bad contract...

Assuming no 'canes defenseman takes a quantum leap forward next season, it would surprise me if Francis actively tried to move Faulk. Legit 1D, 25 years old, $4.83M cap hit for the next three years...that's the stuff of wet dreams. The 'canes do have a wealth of very promising young defensemen, but, at the same time, an NHL team is only as deep as its top players allow it to be (IMO).

Still a horrible signing. Injury prone 3rd liner at best who thinks he's a top 6 forward. Yeah, lock him up Kenny

Toews over Malkin is still the funniest thing I've ever stumbled upon. Oh NHL

And this is why Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin need to win 1-2 more Stanley cups. To deter this bulls*** narrative that's pretty out of control. And it honestly got even more out of control when they (the NHL) put him on the top 100 players list this year. I was really hoping the LA Kings and Kopitar would win their 3rd cup as well. Kopitar finally won that Selke trophy last year (should have won it years ago); a third cup for them would also have helped deter this dumb narrative. I wonder what people will think of Toews 10-15 years from now after he's retired. Will people look back and still think he's that good? Or will they realize how stupidly overrated he was. I'm assuming the latter because hindsight really is 20/20 and in this case, hindsight would actually be a good thing to use in your argument. People used to drool over Danny Heatley, Vincent Lecavelier, Marty Turco back in the mid 2000s. And now those same names are associated with "dam he got washed up", "wow he was overrated", and "holy s*** did people actually think he was that good?"

I still feel the same. I really like Helm, but it felt unnecessary at the time with the Nielson signing and given that Sheahan had taken over as 3C the year previous. It didn't look like he would have a place. Now that Sheahan played like poop and he got the 3C position back it makes more sense, but we still have 1 too many 3Cs if we still planning on Larkin being a center. I am glad he's still with the team, though. He wouldn't be my first choice of the contracts to ditch. I do think the Nielsen signing was the worse one at center. If we didn't do that deal Helm's wouldn't really look that bad - just a little overpaid. I think E, Kronwall, Nielson, and Howard's contracts are greater roadblocks to getting things sorted out It is good to keep in mind that Helm does have a Modified NTC that says he can be traded if we don't make the playoffs 18-19 or 19-20 or if he isn't in the top 9 those years. So there is a guard that will help us if the rebuild isn't going in the right direct by then.

I posted that article. Source was a Vegas scout who mentioned that the team was considering that strategy, because, for a lot of teams, best player available will be a goalie. I think it's a smart strategy on a case by case basis. You have to take a player from Detroit, so why not take the most valuable player available? Thats probably going to be Howard in Detroit. So then you turn around and flip Howard for a better Dman than Sproul, or a better forward than Helm, or the draft picks you want.

Yzerman was a top 5 point league scorer for like 4-5 different seasons. Has Toews EVER been a top scorer in the league? In fact, Anze Kopitar consistently scores more points than Toews (except this past season) and has won the Selke, two Stanley cups. Yet for some reason he isn't on your list with Toews, Ovie, Crosby. Your own post shows just how overrated Toews is when players comparable to him (Bergeron, Kopitar) aren't even named! I'll take it another step. Bergeron has MORE Selkes than Toews, scores at about the same rate (slightly lower), best face off guy in the league, won the stanley cup. Yet... he's not listed amongst this supposed Crosby, Ovie, Toews level..? Btw both Bergeron and Kopitar have been "beasts" in the Stanley cup finals scoring, Kopitar finished a post season with 26 points, Bergeron with 20 points in the 2011 cup run. Toews is not at Ovie or Crosby's level. Toews is at the level of Bergeron and Kopitar. And that's as far as that goes. Bergeron is better defensively than Toews and Kopitar is better offensively than Toews. But overall, the three of them are in the same category. I would even say that prime Datsyuk and Zetterberg are better than all three Bergeron, Toews, Kopitar and slightly under Crosby and Ovie. My point is I don't even think those 3 (Bergeron, Toews, Kopitar) are a tier below Crosby or Ovie I think they're about a tier and a half below. And my final point is. You talk about how being a two way player prevents putting up high numbers. I say bulls***. Sergie Fedorov is a living example of a guy who won Selke, Hart, Pearson and was a top league scorer all within the same season in 1994. Another more recent example is Pavel Datsyuk in 2008 who scored 97 points (4th highest in the league) and won a Selke the same year. Datsyuk did it but Toews never could finish top 5 in scoring. The fact of the matter is, a 2 way player CAN be a top league scorer and there are plenty of players who have done it. Just not Jonathan Toews because Jonathan Toews was never good enough to do it. Believe me even I didn't realize half the crap I'm saying until I actually looked the stats up. Because that's how the TSN and rest of Canadian sports media brain washes you. When you actually go look it up, you realize Toews has never even finished top 10 in scoring let alone top 5 or top 3 or 4 like other 2-way players have in this sport have over the years. Fedorov 1994 - won Selke and finished 2nd highest in scoring after Gretzky Fedorov 1996 - won Selke and finished top 10 in scoring Yzerman in 2000 - won Selke and finished top 10 in scoring Datsyuk 2008 - won Selke and finished 4th in league scoring Zetterberg 2008 - didn't win Selke but finished 3rd, finished 6th in league scoring So what's Toews' excuse?

Yeah, I'd be disappointed if we lose Sproul as well. If he's left unprotected (he will be), I can definitely see him being the most attractive player available from the Wings. I can definitely see him going to any other team and moulding into a very good top 4, power-play quarterback. I'm still hoping Holland will use a mid round pick and / or mid level prospect to get them to take Ericsson off our hands. Or maybe we don't have to give them anything and they take Howard (doubtful)...

Yeah, Faulk is amazing. Another 2nd round steal. You say they're looking for centers? Sheahan for Faulk straight up. It's a steal for Carolina really. I mean, we're basically trading our 2010 1st round pick for their 2010 2nd round pick... Back to reality... Yeah, I would think any of those first 4 you mentioned should be able to be had for the right price. I think both Hanifin and Faulk would be on their "untouchable list" though... Bean would be my target of the 4, but for the same reason, he may be the hardest to convince the Caines to trade. Bean would instantly become our top prospect, and legit shot at being a number one defenseman in couple years. If we added Bean via trade and Glass (if available) in this year's draft, I think we would be in pretty good shape going forward.
