Sure, those guys got overpaid. In the context when Franzen actually signed his deal, the Red Wings opted for him over a better (slightly more expensive) Marian Hossa. I didn't really care about signing Clarkson or Clowe, but in terms of value comparing players -- I want Hossa over Franzen every time.

I would actually take Franzen over all those players. None of those guys should be top line wingers, imo. But I don't think any of them have Franzen's skill set, or are as lazy as him.

these might not be exact fits, but all come very close to the goals or salary criteria. since your numbers are all arbitrary to begin with, i feel the list is valid. it shows that franzen is not some super great contract that absolves him from any criticism: matt moulson andrew ladd chris kunitz michael ryder erik cole

Did you think they were going to make less than they did? Or were you pipedreaming? A) Everybody with any sense knew that they were going to get paid what they did. B) Everybody else should have listened to the guys who knew better. C) Anybody who adamantly thought they'd make less than they did, in spite of what more knowledgeable people said, has a woefully inadequate understanding of what physically large, moderately talented, UFAs make in the NHL these days. But the original point I was trying to make is that most people knew Clarkson and Clowe were going to get paid A LOT, in spite their limited success, but wanted them anyway for some stupid reason. Then these same people have the gall to turn around and jump on Franzen, who's only ever made less and produced WAY more than either of them in their respective careers. Neither of these two are known for their versatility either...so you can't really use the "When Franzen isn't scoring he's not doing anything" argument either. Bitching about Franzen, while wanting a worse player for more money makes one both foolish and hypocritical. If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, then don't.

I do shop at Walmart on occasion, but I don't make a habit out of it. If I can find what I need somewhere else, I will go there first. I do not understand in the slightest the modern obsession with celebrity gossip. I could not care less what famous people are doing with their lives. Quit talking about the damn Kardashians or whether or not [insert famous actress] is pregnant and get on with the real news. And speaking of "real news", most major news stations are trash. CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, etc. They'll spend hours covering some mundane thing and ignore real issues going on all over the world. It's a joke. I am proud to say I have never read nor watched any of the books/movies. Same with "50 Shades of Gray" There's better fanfiction written by 15-year-olds. I don't understand how drivel like that gets published. I can't stand Will Ferrell. He needs to just stop. Adam Sandler is all right, like Mabus said, his older movies are better. Don't really have an opinion of the other two.

Grow up. Franzen has never scored 60 points, and only scored 30 goals once, which was 5 years ago. So name me a player like that, because Franzen isn't one either. I didn't answer the question because I actually had real points to make.

Great LOL to start a work week!! Thanks. If we are looking to move a few players to bring in a gritty veteran presence... I might prefer to see us bring in Morrow over Cleary. I have nothing against Cleary and would be happy with him coming back but maybe Morrow would be a better option?! I also dont think Tootoo should be going anywhere and would rather see him perm on the 4th line. He's always all in! I believe he has some good 4th line hockey in him too. Lose Miller or Eaves and Emmerton + Keep Tootoo and bring in Morrow!! If that would work of course.

Just me but laces added to any hockey jersey just instantly makes it better. I like this a bit better but the shoulders look too square.

I'm ready to let the next gen take over. The Wings' defense has a lot of potential, and they've been groomed for this year for a while. Lets see what they can do behind the wheel.

Either you develop players or you try to keep overpaying for vets and eventually end up with a crap team full of vets you can't move. It's time to let the players grow into top 4 roles. Between Smith Kindl and Dekeyser the 2nd pair will be fine.

The problem is that if Franzen isn't scoring goals, he doesn't bring anything else to the team. He needs to be more aggressive offensively and always look to shoot first. That doesn't always seem to be the case. We've seen him go on streaks where he's as good as anyone in the league at scoring goals. When he doesn't do it consistently, it appears it's because of him having a lazy work ethic. The converse argument is when people state that he produces at the pay level he's currently at. I guess that's true. But that doesn't mean it's OK for a guy to be lazier and underachieve a bit.
