Ice Bucket ALS Challenge: Bettman edition

Dan Cleary accepted the challenge. I like that he put up the info for donating online. I haven't seen anyone do that yet.

UGH. I hate what this re-signing has done to people's (myself included) perception of Cleary. That video just made me want to hug him and beg him to retire. Also, did anyone else notice he referred to himself as "Danny?"

It would have been better if he poked a lil' fun at himself and had people booing him while he was talking. http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=49&id=629400&cmpid=nhl-fb

Harold, I was essentially responding to that by pointing out the reason those prospects on the Kings were so highly regarded. They were really high picks. As opposed to most guys drafted by the wings - they're lower picks, go much further under the radar and generally take a lot longer to reach any sort of high ceiling that they might have. Yes KH has made a couple of bad moves, but not everything he has done has been bad. If I'm arguing this, I'd say this team is still competitive. Making the playoffs still means you're competitive. It means you've got a chance. While this team hasn't been the dominant juggernaut that I think most here would like to see (myself included), doesn't mean they haven't been competitive. And realistically, what if he'd actually signed Suter? This team would have been strengthened no end I feel. But he swung and miss in free agency, and it happens. It just means that it's taking a little longer for the plan to come to fruition in terms of the young guys coming through the system, which we're finally seeing the benefit of. Obviously, I think we'd all like to see the Wings get back to world beaters sooner rather than later, but if it also takes time, and if that means it's done the right way that ensures long term success again, then i'll be willing to wait.

Frank, I can't tell if you truly feel this way or if your over-zealous dissapproval of Holland has spiraled out of control. Eveyone's entitled to their opinion for sure, but this statement I quoted is just plain wrong. And what about incurable pessimists?

Very classy move by Danny Cleary. This video seems to highlight why the Wings felt he is such a great locker room presence. Huge kudos for putting up the donation information and putting together a professionally done video that may end up getting some airplay down the road to help the cause.

I love these. It may seem silly, but it's raising awareness and leading to huge increases in donations!

Dammit Bettman. I can't keep telling people that you're a Muppet if you keep doing things like this, which make you look like an honorable and respectful human... Glad to see how this whole challenge is raising awareness of ALS.

Every once in a while for a fleeting moment, Bettman does something that makes me think he might not be the worst creature on earth. Gotta give him props for doing that.

This is true to some extent. However, lets look at some of the people whom some fans wanted as GM of the Wings instead of Holland. Yzerman - So far, he has done well at Tampa Bay. Their roster this year looks better than last year. Except since he took over, they made the playoffs their first year, missed the second year and third year, and then made it last year only to get swept in the first round. Better than Holland? That remains to be seen. Ray Shero would be the only guy I would even consider being GM of the Wings. If his job is to ensure that we have a competitive team that competes for a championship every season, he has achieved his goal. If you are measuring accountability by championship or nothing, then there are 29 other GMs who are also failing.

Some people won't be happy, no matter what happens... I have accepted that... It's sad but very true... I'm really happy that Kenny is going to remain with the club for the foreseeable future. Those of you that aren't... whatever... There would be 29 other teams lining up to pay Holland crazy amounts of money if he were let go, and for good reason. Same goes for Babcock, but I bet there would still be angry Wings fans if they signed him to an extension. While it's true that you can never please everyone, some people can never be pleased...

I dunno, harold. I think over the course of this five year drought we've always been a couple key pieces away from seriously competing for the Cup. At the same time, our prospect cupboards were empty, and the brain trust has done a really good job of re-stocking. Right now we have one of the better prospect pools in the league, and I think we're still just a couple key pieces away from being a serious contender, because we still have Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Franzen. I think that's rebuilding on the fly. Over the course of a few years you remain competitive, maybe trying for a UFA home run here and there - but the focus is on keeping the competitive core while building up a solid stable of very promising young players that will hopefully complement that core and one day take over. Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco have broken through, Smith and DeKeyser should take big steps forward this season, and we're also looking at four or five very good D prospects waiting in the wings, Anthony Mantha being no more than a year away, and our goalie of the future spending his final season as a Griffin. I (want to) believe Ken Holland has been doing what he's been doing for good reason and that the past few years of "futility" are going to pay off in a big way.

That does not mean he's going to be fired at all lol. Red Wings fans HATE Holland right now and the guy just got an extension. Why? Because 99% of fans are blithering idiots who can't see past the next immediate season, so I'm sure the organization really couldn't care less what we think. EDIT: There's no option available better than Holland
