What's to stop Chris Chelios from being Darren Helm?

You got it wrong man, I'm Darren Helm.

Denial is the first stage mate. There are no conspiracy theories. None of us are hired by Helm and Helm has better things to do than make an account on some forum. He's a millionaire and could careless who thinks what. We're all just fans speaking fairly. Helm > Miller. If you really want to see what the entire forums think, you could start a thread and put up a poll and see for yourself.

If anything, Kessel would be the player most likely to drop the Cup.

Helm is one of the best puck hounds and bottom sixers in the game. The problem only arises when he's in the top six, and then the issue of cost and term.

Our number one need is hands down a defenseman, but not necessarily offensive or defensive, but a true top pairing guy. I'd prefer a two-way, someone that can move the puck exceptionally well, and also shut down the oppositions top players. I think Jacob Trouba will be that player in the very near future, so he'd be my number one target...

Now THESE are the Sharks I've been watching this post-season.

Yup...because I said that's all we needed this off-season... Quit manipulating other peoples statements to fit what you want to argue about. Also Nielsen would have led our team in scoring this year. But call him a depth player all you want...

I'm not saying he utilized stamkos properly. I'm saying the playoffs had nothing to do with how stamkos was played. Since he didn't play

Yes, everyone that thinks Helm is a very good bottom 6 forward is actually Helm in disguise. In fact, Helm has already been gone for a full season. He left for Toronto for whopping $50M last spring. No wait, wasn't Helm the guy that coached the Red Wings into the playoffs last season? Or was he that guy leaving for Russia known as the "Magic Man"? Or maybe he's that bald guy with glasses that knows everything hockey related between the glass on NBC?... I'm so confused, there are way too many Darren Helm's... No matter how many times you say "Helm sucks", it's not going to make it true... Pretty much every advanced stat out there proves you wrong. But year, keep beating that drum, you obviously know better than NHL GM's, coaches, players, analysts, and the majority of fans... Although, Id prefer to get him locked up for under $3M, he absolutely is worth every bit of 3, and he will get that or more whether he signs here or elsewhere this summer...

I don't want either of them back to be honest, but some of the things being said about Miller... lol. The guy is a plug, plain and simple. Average PKer, boat anchor at 5on5, not a speedy player to begin with coming off a major knee injury, and a non-physical 4th liner. I blame Kenny for this, only he would have fans arguing over plugs coming back over and over

He said play top 6 "in a pinch" and then said he needs to agree to play bottom 6 role strictly. You turned what he said around hard.

Except that's not true at all. You absolutely CAN isolate individuals performances using advanced stats. In simple terms, by aggregating the shots for and against accrued by a players most frequent linemates when said player is on the ice w/them vs. when they aren't and someone else is. Its no different than measuring someone's possession numbers, just in reverse. Instead of counting the shots for, you'd count the shots against. And I assume you're perfectly fine with those stats, you've used them repeatedly in the past to analyze the play of Brendan Smith. And using those same measures you find that Miller's unit gives up a ton of chances when he's on the ice rather than say Jurco or Anderson. Probably because despite his shot blocking, he's too slow and weak to gain control of the puck, and too unskilled to advance it when he does. Either way, Miller sucks.

Hopefully Miller moves on. He could get more money on the open market, his PK abilities are highly overrated (numbers back this up, if you don't follow Prashanth Iyer on twitter, do it) and he's a boat anchor at even strength. Nosek/Callahan/etc. can give us everything Drew does for cheaper.

In the past, this poll would be easy. Back then, we were good and were missing a piece or two. Now we need at least 4 of those categories. Maybe all 5, but we likely don't need any defensive defensemen (though an upgrade over what we have would be nice). But all the other categories we badly need to upgrade. I didn't vote because I can't decide what the biggest need is. I'm leaning towards offensive defenseman, because your offense starts from the blue line.

Richards isn't an upgrade over Larkin. We'll have to see how they are on faceoffs come september. I'd assume a guy with Larkin's work ethic will do what he can to increase his faceoff %

He wasn't a strong 2nd/3rd center last year. He will be worse next year. Too old and too slow. Virtually any young player playing in his place would be as good or better.

You say you want Richards but not others because they're too old and worthless in the same post. If you want Richards back at any price you're ok with old and useless.

I agree, 41% for the top two centers would be atrocious, but you can be guaranteed that both will improve on those numbers next season. I think both would reach 45-50% easily, and although that would still be below average - average, that certainly would not necessitate a full on rebuild... We are in the midst of a "rebuild", the only difference is we're not trying to tank. In the situation we're currently in, transitioning from the Datsyuk, Zetterberg era to the Larkin, Athanasiou, Mantha era, putting our future top center in the the middle is the best for the team going forward. Ideally we'd land a number one center via trade or free agency, and Larkin would be our number two, Athanasiou / Sheahan would be number three and Glendening would be four... However if Holland isn't able to land a true a number one center, I'd rather go with the kids than re-sign Richards or sign a Staal... These guys are barely top 6 centers and definitely aren't number one's anymore. Anyway, difference of opinion, I'm not saying you're wrong, hell you may be more "right" than me, since what you're advocating is probably what Holland ends up doing, but I just don't agree with it. Enough with the stop-gaps, we should be going with the kids...

I don't think I've ever disagreed with so much in one post... Aside from the first sentence I disagree with pretty much everything here... We don't need a Russell or Hamhuis, aka mid tier defenseman. We already have plenty of them on the team now, not to mention any of the kids that are out of options this coming season that could play the same role a hell of a lot cheaper. Quincey played decent this season as well as last, but he needs to go to make room for Ouellet and Sproul. Richards should be gone as well. The only way I see him returning is if we completely strike out on free agency, and Staal isn't the solution either. Both would be a mistake in my opinion, as I think both Larkin and Athanasiou would be better suited to take over the top 6 center positions. Maybe not short term, but certainly looking long term. Switch Abdelkader back to center? In the top 6? That would be terrible... He's much better suited as a winger and would get destroyed as a top 6 center. Zetterberg should also be switched to the wing or 3rd line center getting limited ice time. No way should he be our number one center next season. Helm is terrible? Seriously? No, he's not a top 6 guy and shouldn't be used there, but he is one of the best bottom 6 / penalty killers in the league. Miller is a must? Miller is f***ing awful compared to Helm. Pulkkinen on the top line over Larkin, Mantha, Nyquist, Tatar or pretty much anyone? Marchenko on the top pair and Green as the number 7? The fact that you don't have any of Nyquist, Tatar or Green in your lineup is funny enough, but that you say they're "almost impossible to move" is hilarious... I'm not trying to s*** on your post too much, but I just have no idea how you could be serious about any of this...
