Salaries have been going up in the league for years. A 4th liner making 1.8 per year is not unheard of this day and age. The only folks who get less than a million these days are those on entry level deals or players who still have something to prove (like Jurco, or any other player fighting for an NHL roster spot). Guys like Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck out there are making far more per year. Role players are important, and those who show they can play are gonna get paid. The sooner folks realize this, the less stressful they'll get when this type of new breaks. The cap isnt 39 million any more. Proven players, even 4th liners, aren't gonna be restricted to league minimum anymore. Salaries have gone up across the board. Why should the guys who produce most of the offense be the only guys to get paid more than they used to? If disney.com hit the market this year along with Matt Martin, you know damn well it would be him getting that 2.5 million per year contract in Toronto instead. This is not me saying disney.com's contract is a steal. This is me saying that a deal like this is par for the course this day and age, as dictated by the market.

It's not a black-or-white, all-or-nothing issue. Holland's making it one, but it's not one (or, it shouldn't be one). The team needs more youth. It doesn't need all youth. It needs more youth. And more skill, more talent, more high-end ability. Greater possession prowess. Goal scoring. Being able to play without the puck. Young legs. Size. These are things we're lacking. These are things that an Athanasiou or a Mantha can provide, and for a dirt-cheap cap hit--and neither of these players has even come close to hitting his respective ceiling yet. We're looking more and more like the Canadiens, and that's not a good thing. It's a bad thing. All this garbage about Grit and Character and Experience and Playing Without the Puck and Veteran Leadership and Knowing Your Place and Earning Your [insert whatever the hell it is you're supposed to be "earning"] -- it's all bulls***. And, accordingly, we'll be lucky to make the playoffs this season, just like 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13.

The issue isn't necessarily about Glendening, it's about having several young forwards who are at least potentially NHL players in the next 2-3 years and Holland handing out 4 year or more contracts to guys who could easily be replaced and refusing to trade anyone else because it's hard.

There are contracts that hurt this team. This absolutely is not one of them. He has played under two coaches with this team and they both love having him. Maybe, just maybe they know a little more about what he brings than we do? He can skate, very good on the draw, and is very efficient in shutting down opponents best players. Especially in the playoffs. He is also good for chipping in 20 points along the way. He makes very few mistakes. He is exactly what you want as a 4th line center. If a kid comes and outperforms him at that 4C role, the contract is absolutely movable. Hell, in the 2008 playoff run we had Mark ******* Hartigan in the lineup at times. It's safe to say disney.com has been the best 4th line center we've had in some time. Even comparable to the last time we've experienced success. Glad he is sticking around.

Not sure who should be more insulted by the above statement. Crosby being compared to Johnson or Z being compared to Glenndog.

Did anyone mention this? Haven't been on in couple days so wasn't sure. Could be slashing but refs choice from what I been reading. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NWxD88Mx-LQ

Or Glendog being referred to as Disney.com

Nielsen is a player put against top players. That's his job. He drew the toughest matchups for the Islanders. So the answer is Nielsen. http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2010/7/20/1577993/grading-the-islanders-frans (bit of an older article but it still stands)

You know when you are at a job interview, they always ask, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" I guess Holland takes care of answering that question for everyone on the team.

$1.8m/yr for 4 ... if this was the NBA, someone like him playing his role on the team would be getting $18m/yr for 4 years.

At least Holland isn't signing 4th liners to long term contracts when we need to start infusing more youth into the lineup.........................................................................

Let's wait and see before we accuse Holland of waiving all these players. Maybe he has something in the works... We haven't really lost anyone of significance on waivers, so I can't really see it starting this year with a Sproul type player... In the past 7 years we have lost Mattias Ritola, Joey MacDonald, Andrej Nestrasil and Landon Ferraro. Of those 4 players, the only player I would say was a mistake losing was Ferraro, and only because I think he was an upgrade over Miller. But when it's an ever-so-slight upgrade over your number 12 forward, it's not a "huge" loss... Speaking of Miller, he was the only player we claimed off waivers in that time... Of the four that could potentially be waived this year (no way all 4 get waived), the only one I think will definitely be waived is Jensen, and I would say he has about a 95% chance to clear, so I'm okay with that. Frk could possibly be waived as well, and I'd say he has about an 80% chance to clear, so it is a risk, one I'd prefer not to have to take... Ouellet and Sproul are the one's that I'm concerned about because I'd say both have about 80% chance to be claimed... If either of those two are waived (let alone claimed), that would be awful roster management, and I'd begin to question Holland's ability to manage this team going forward... He needs to make a trade, and I'm not fully confident that he will make one, or that he will make the right one...

    Who should get A?

Again, what buds??? People are trying to create this narrative that Larkin is buddy buddy with all these Leaf players when it's not true at all... Why? Just to be negative? There's not enough negativity around here lately?... If Larkin were to leave the Wings to play with a buddy, it would be Columbus with Werenski, and if you believe he's going to leave Detroit to play in Columbus, whatever...

This isn't a Glendog issue- it's a management issue mostly. The log jam is basically becoming a long term one. It will be interesting to see how we deal with all our players who are no longer waiver eligible this year and next year.

Draper was a good shut down defender. The grind line wasn't constantly penned in the D zone like Glendening and Miller are. Just because he defends all the time doesn't mean he's a shut down center. And nobody is going to trade for a guy like Glendening., especially at that cap hit

Toronto would take him in a heartbeat

I don't see how Turgeon or Nastasiuk wouldn't be an upgrade over Glendening in the next 5 years...

We have a lit if good young forwards in the minors and juniors, so I'm going to give a bunch of mid and low keep NHL players long term deals so the kids can't make the team. - Ken Holland

    Who should get A?

Okay? And what's your point? I said they likely became buddies since they were teammates and linemates... Since then, I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't hung out once. Sure they could have, but my point was that I don't think they were ever that close... I'm sure Larkin is closer with other players around the league, I doubt Zach Hyman would be a reason for Larkin to jump ship to Toronto...

The thing that bothers me the most about this signing is that for whatever reason it needed to be done this offseason... Why the urgency to lock up a 4th line plug to a 4 year contract when he still has a year remaining on his contract? Why not see what happens in another full season and worry about re-signing him next off-season if you really feel the need to? Glendening wasn't going anywhere, so why the rush? Were you really afraid that his value was going to skyrocket above $1.8M? Not likely... I like Glendening, he works his a** off every shift of every game, and I don't doubt he's a great guy to have in the locker room, especially to help the kids get in shape. But none of that makes up for the on ice product, and the on-ice product is bad... He's good at face-offs? Great, but what good is gaining possession if you're just going to lose it right away? He's good at blocking shots? He damn well better be, because he never has the puck...

First of all, I'll just start of by being completely blunt. You're wrong. I've had enough of people trying to push a narrative on Glendenning that he somehow shutdown Tyler Johnson in 2015. Tyler Johnson single handedly destroyed the Red Wings in the 2015 playoffs while Steven Stamkos was nowhere to be found. Game 2 - Tyler Johnson scored 2 goals Game 4 - Tyler Johnson scored 1 goal to help tie the game AND the game winner in OT Game 6 - Tyler Johnson scored 2 goals Oh and uh Glendening played in all 7 playoff games. Lets stop trying to give the guy more credit than he actually deserves and for the love of maurice richard's shot don't compare him to 2008 Zetterberg lol. Glendog is a 4th line shutdown forward with pretty good faceoffs numbers. There's nothing more or less to it.

There were soooo many people here that wanted to sign Matt Martin, even when the reported asking price was upwards of $4M. Martin produces half the points as Helm, isn't used on either special teams, had much worse possession numbers, but he somehow would have been a better option over Helm?... Haha "the grass is always greener..."

If this happened Holland would be in deep crap with the ASPCA first for bagging all of those pugs and secondly for using them as a weapon.... the poor pugs. For the love of God think of the pugs!!!
