Smith and Bertuzzi Injury Updates

You need to sing that to the theme of Rawhide. On a more serious note (pun intended): That is the first time I'm glad about our roster jam. We're like Hydra. Cut one (mediocre) head off, and we grow another one. -

Kyle Quincey
UpstateNYRedWingsFan reacted to kliq for a post in a topic
Well if I used wrestling to speak to explain the feelings about KFQ around here, I would say this. Quincey was a tweener on the Wings for years, then when he signed his 2 year contract after the 2014 season, he did a full-out heel turn to join Holland and Cleary as the heel stable on the Wings. (someone made a pretty funny zoolander gif with them). But then last year KFQ turned face as he and DD were an excellent second pairing for us. So I think most now look at Quincey in a positive light, but nobody will forget his heel run. Dickie's comments, I would assume are more pertaining to the heel Qunicey. lol anyone that doesn't know wrestling is going to wonder "what the F is he talking about". -

It's amazing what happens when the line is no longer dominated by "defensive specialists" -
1 pointFor someone missing as much time as he has it was a pretty impressive night for Jurco. The fourth line had one of its strongest games of the year imo

I like JVR but I'm disappointed that he doesn't seem to play a heavy game given his massive and well trained frame. The Wings are in no position to give up their first rounder this year because it could be the first top 10 or even top 5 in decades trading that for a rental would be stupid. -

Nobody has said otherwise, hence why I actually suggest reading a discussion before giving your two cents. -
1 pointIf JVR was signed long term maybe, but he has 1 year left after this season which would essentially make him a rental. I dont want to lose a first rounder for a rental.

1 pointI'm surprised he just looked OK to you. Can I ask if you watched in person or on TV? Not to dismiss either, I'm just curious if it didn't come across on TV. I thought he looked great, especially considering the line he was on.

What to do about Vanek

So basically, do we tank and trade him? Or do we try to make the playoffs? Playoffs. -

Jurco injured
derblaueClaus reacted to Dabura for a post in a topic
I thought he looked like the Good Jurco (i.e. healthy Jurco) that I fondly remember. His two-way game is underrated, he's a good possession player, he likes to use his size, he skates well, and he has a high-end skill set. People forget that he's only 23 (well, soon to be 24), which makes him a whopping one year (or two years, if you like) older than Mantha and Athanasiou. I was surprised by Blashill's post-game comments about him... http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2016/11/30/detroit-red-wings-tomas-jurco-season-debut/94648522/ Nice to see him give a kid some straight-up praise. -

Mrazek had 3 bad games where he let in 4 goals each game before Howard was put in. That's leeway to me. Alternately, Howard was taken out as soon as he had the one 5-0 game and replaced with Mrazek the following game. With your example of Howard getting blown out, I assume you mean the 5-0 MTL loss. The factor you don't mention is how the other goalie played when they came in the following game. After the MTL loss, Mrazek didn't play well against Tampa and we lost 4-3. Alternately, after Mrazek's struggles, Howard came in and played solid the next 3 games and we won 2 of 3 and lost the other (EDM) by 2-1. That the difference that kept Howard in - quality of play and the fact that Mrazek was struggling - not a vet bias. I was a little surprised that Howard got the 4th game in a row, but I thought it was an undertandable decision. There has been a history of the Wings keeping vets in over youth despite their poor play, but that narrative doesn't fit this situation to me. -

11/29 GDT : Stars 1 @ Red Wings 3
Detroit # 1 Fan reacted to Dabura for a post in a topic
I did not like Blashill putting Kronwall, Ericsson and Zetterberg out there to start that 4-on-4 late in the third. There were other things I didn't like, but I thought we played pretty well overall and deserved the two points. On a general note: I want to live in a world where Larkin, Mantha, Athanasiou, Jurco, Sproul and Ouellet are all in the lineup and doing awesome young guns things, like some kind of awesome young guns biker gang. Ouellet would of course be the leader of said hypothetical biker gang, because, seriously, that 'stache. -

1 pointHe dropped back down to his weight from a couple years ago when he had that stint of success. Apparently he felt winded pretty easily after he beefed up. We'll see if it translates on the ice.

Corsi is the most overrated thing right now, and this is coming from someone who values numbers and objective data more than the eyeball test. I understand it has merit but it's being used synonymously with "possession" which is quite a stretch. I wish the league was more adamant about tracking who has the puck before and after player X, because I think that would be the most efficient way of measuring a player's effect on team puck possession. Corsi is a +/- of shot attempts, and runs into a lot of the same problems that +/- does. -

Yeah, Tatar's play this season has definitely worked him down the depth chart, but selling low on a guy like him right now is silly. He's a good player. With AA healthy I'd think about something like this though. Nyq-Larkin-Vanek Z-AA-Mantha Tatar-Neilsen-Abby Jurco-Glen-Sheahan -

Tatar gets a D- for being stupid and not letting his arm heal this summer. But no he's not expendable. He's about to be a steal if we can use this lack of performance to get a cheap contract out of him. Ofcourse Ken Holland can't be an idiot and be generous either. -

I didn't say he's playing well injured. We lack offense and Tatar is usually a good offensive threat. He's not expendable to me until Larkin, Mantha, AA and Nyquist are all lighting it up. -
