I love the Seider pick! Watch that guy being interviewed he's very sharp, self-aware, and seemingly willing to be a team guy. The argument about where he should have been picked is based on mock drafts... remember these guys aren't scouts they just play them on TV. -

He's kinda got that creepy "felt cute, might invade Poland later" German smile Strong Jaw, add that to the list of things I like about him Don't normally like bow ties, but somehow it seems to work with a hockey jersey Meme potential image Have we talked about how the Germans have underrated Jerseys yet? Winning the German league cup This one is from the future as he walks to accept the 2020 Norris Trophy I figure if I humanize him enough everyone will have to love him > Swap Chychrun for Cholowski and afterthought Hronek > Booo Chychrun is better than Cholowski! > Afterthought Hronek turns out better than both > Prospects are chaos -

Talking about not being able to win, your counter argument is essentially "nuh uh, we drafted for need, it's obvious." We have a need literally everywhere, Yzerman came out and said "we're just drafting the best prospects regardless of position" and you're still going nuh uh. I'm gonna side with the GM and KR on this one, you're being obstinate. Hard to argue with someone who'd just assume they're being lied to rather than believe they're wrong. -

So....you're argument is that it's probable that they ranked some defensemen only slightly lower than some forwards, but completely unbelievable that they might have ranked those same defensemen slightly above those same forwards? Leaving aside that our D is not necessarily the weakest part of our prospect pool, you also have to consider that there were several big, mobile, two-way D available, and ranked higher than Tuomisto. There was clearly something specific about him as an individual that led to that pick. -
2 pointslol no I did not! I thought it was just rumored for July 1st, I didnt realize that Philly traded for his rights. Oh those poor Philly fans lol.

"Reach" just means he went against the prevailing opinion. Since he would obviously know that prevailing opinion, he would obviously understand that he might be able to trade back and still get his guy. That does not in any way suggest that he didn't believe Seider was the BPA. Aside from that, it's only your opinion that RHD was our biggest need. Objectively, our biggest need is probably G, so Knight should have been his choice. Or if we're differentiating based on handedness, a right shot winger, so he should have gone Caufiled or Cozens (plus numerous options in the later rounds). If looking at defense, it's our left side if any that was weaker going in to the draft, though even if you just generalize all D, Broberg was generally ranked higher, so he should have been the choice. And finally, even though we have Larkin, C is not exactly an area of strength. Really the only thing we didn't need was left shot wingers. We drafted four. -
2 pointsIf we were to all post a list of the 10 best players in the NHL last year, the combined list could easily be 20-30 names. If we can't agree on how to judge players in the same league based on hindsight, how much should we be upset about some disagreement on how a bunch of 17/18 yo kids playing in many different leagues all over the world will turn out 5-6 years from now? Every guy we could have picked had someone who didn't think he should go that high, and all of Zegras, Cozens, Caufiled, and Boldy were ranked lower than Seider by at least one person. Yes, it was a reach, but not a particularly big one. No big deal, no matter how it turns out.

How do I know what? My point is, none of us have seen THE lists for NHL teams. Therefore, none of us know where Kotkaniemi was on Bergevin's list or Seider was on Yzerman's list. We've seen the same lists (give or take) circulated all season, and because none of Bob McKenzie, Craig Button or Corey Pronman had Seider high on their lists, some of you think it's impossible that Yzerman had Seider at the top of his list... Yes, I do think if we had 6 forwards ahead of Tuomisto, we would have taken one of the forwards. However, if we had Tuomisto and 6 forwards ranked similarly, it is possible that we could have taken Tuomisto ahead of the forwards based on need. I'd disagree with that decision because I think one of the 6 forwards would have filled a bigger need, but whatever. So you'll bet all the internet money on Yzerman telling his scouts to specifically target defensemen, despite him saying otherwise before and after the draft? Cool... If Seider truly was picked 10 spots ahead of where he should have been, that would make him a player that should have been picked in the 16+ range. How many GM's think it's realistic to get a true number one defenseman in that range? How many GM's think it's wise to take the 16th best player on their own list at number 6? A) You're right. Nobody knows what Yzerman is thinking except Yzerman. So all we can go on is what Yzerman had told us, and that is, he did not pick based on need, he picked what he and his scouts believe were the best players available... B) You're right. Yzerman isn't an idiot. An idiot would pick a player "10 spots ahead" of where he had him ranked. I'm glad Yzerman didn't do this... No, he isn't going to divulge everything he's thinking, but he did give us a pretty good idea of his thought process before and after the draft... C) I'm not pretending like anyone is blaming Yzerman. I'm just saying that Yzerman picked what he believes was BPA. No, I didn't see his list. No, I can't read his mind. I'm basing this on two things... what he's told us, and common sense... I know that last part is difficult for you to comprehend... -

Size doesn’t matter lmao How do you know? Have you seen this magical list? Maybe they had him a notch above and decided the need for center was a greater need for them which it was so they did the right move , that teams been lacking a #1 center for 20 years What’s a lesser player for you mean? You think if the wings have 6 forwards ahead of tuomisto and then tuomisto they would have taken the forward ? Cause I don’t nessarily see it that way ... you think if kaliyev was available they’d have taken him or passed? I think they were targeting tuomisto at #35 no matter who was there , Id bet all the internet money you want prior to the draft yzerman told the scouts to specially target dmen that can help this team turn around , I think there’s zero coincidence we targeted 3 dmen with our first 4 picks -

We’ll have to yet again agree to disagree no point missed , it’s called a difference of opinion ... they might have had players in the same tier doesn’t mean when it comes time to select and they See zadina ahead of kotkaniemi on the list let’s say, even though they think zadina will have a better statistical career than kotkaniemi they think it won’t be that much better and since they desperately need to find a center and nobody will come here and teams aren’t trading #1centers they just decide to draft the player themselves if you don’t think teams never draft for need Then I don’t know what to tell you , we simply won’t agree on this .... I never said yzerman didn’t want seider at 6 he probably would have taken him at 2 after byram knowing kakko and hughes would be gone cause we were going to address our defence this draft plain and simple , same with #35 tuomisto Who was probably more like 15-25 on the wings list anyways is what it is and I hope it all works out for us -

1 pointWhy is 2017 "turning into s***"? Because our late round picks turned out to be s***? That's going to happen more often than not. It's still very possible that Rasmussen could be a top six winger / power-play specialist, capable of 25 goals, 25 assists. Would I have taken someone different? Absolutely. However, the player I was pushing hardest for was Vilardi, and who knows if he'll ever play, let alone be an impact player. I also liked Necas and Liljegren over Rasmussen, but whatever. It's also possible that Lindstrom could be a top four defenseman / penalty killer, capable of 10 goals, 20 assists. We also have Petruzzelli that could still become an NHL goaltender... I think any year you "hit" on 3+ players, it's a very successful draft. I don't think a single person would argue that we undoubtedly took the best players available with each and every selection. A few people, including myself, mentioned players we would have preferred with our first 5 picks. I would have been happier with this draft if we had taken Cozens, Lavoie, Leason, Legare, Beaucage, but I'm not going to assume Yzerman and co have no idea what they're doing because they "went off the board" or "reached" based on other scouts / analysts rankings...

This guy gets it. IIRC he even said they weren't drafting for need and this was just how it played out. The other guys they were looking at for 6 were taken already (I'd guess Byram and Dach). If you don't believe him when he literally comes out and says "We're just trying to draft the best prospects available" then I don't know what to tell you. Disagree, I think this logic is faulty. It tells me he knew there was a possibility he could get the guy he wanted later because he knew the consensus had him lower, and was trying to maximize assets. Yzerman mentioned in an interview that the focus of development camp was going to be educating them on being professionals, and less on conditioning, because they have varying background/experience. He included how to eat properly when mentioning that. I think It's fair to include that as an obvious benefit of playing here in NA, where team staff can help him with all that and essentially monitor him. -

2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread, Pt. 2 - What's the Yzerplan?
LeftWinger reacted to Buppy for a post in a topic
This is about as uninspiring a FA class as you can get, particularly in light of some of the contracts being signed already. I'd have no problem throwing $11x7 at Panarin, but it seems we're not even interested. Beyond him I'd go for guys with some question marks, who could potentially be signed short term for under market value. Connolly, Johansson, Pirri, maybe Simmonds. I wouldn't mind Myers, but definitely not near the $8M rumor that was mentioned. -

I just don't understand the talk on Seider being a "reach". Based on what? Seider may have been a reach on other draft boards, but he clearly wasn't a "reach" to Yzerman, or at least one other general manager in the top 10. Sure it's possible that Seider develops into a DeKeyser. Very unlikely in my opinion, but possible... It's also possible that Zegras develops into a Sam Bennett, or Cozens develops into a Jake Virtanen. None of these guys are a guarantee to become anything. I choose to believe that Yzerman has half a clue of what he's doing, and he truly did see something in this kid that few others seen. I'll admit that I wanted Zegras or Cozens at 6, but I'm not going to pretend I know better than Yzerman or any of the scouts in the Red Wings organization. I'm happy with the pick, and it'll be interesting to see how it plays put. I'm confused about what you're WTFing about? Eating? Yes, professional athletes have very strict diets and most teams in the NHL have a team nutritionist. Lisa McDowell is the Red Wings nutritionist, and believe it or not, all of these kids take cooking classes and learn what foods they should and shouldn't be eating. It's actually a very important part of development camp, that starts tomorrow... -

This is why I trust and therefore defer to the experts/scouts. A reach is a reach based on what? Where Corey Pronman told you a guy should go? f*** Corey Pronman. If Yzerman took Raphael Lavoie at #6 overall, my opinion would be damn this Lavoie kid must be a lot better than anyone realized. Not "Yzerman isn't folowing BPA! What a retard" -

I know it's said in a draft to pick the best player available, but we're at a point now where we need to draft certain types of players. We have a lot of young forwards, so we need defencemen with size, and get a starting goalie soon. If Seider is the guy we wanted, I don't have a problem with it.
